Beta-Attenuation Mass MonitorBAM1020Features:n U.S. EPA Federal EquivalentMethod for PM 10 and PM 2.5n Long term, unattended remoteoperationn Very low operating costsn Data retrieval through RS-232portn Internal datalogger includedwhich allows up to six additionalair quality or meteorologicalmeasurementsn Automatic ‘span’ check onceper hourn Operates with Met One InstrumentsMicroMet Plus orComet Softwaren Data memory accessible frommain menuMet One Instrument’s BAM-1020 beta attenuation massmonitor has U.S. EPA designationas a Federal EquivalentMethod (FEM) for PM 10(EQPM-0798-122) and PM 2.5(EQPM-0308-170) monitoring. It has corresponding certificationsin the United Kingdom,Korea, and China for automaticmonitoring and recordingof PM 10 concentrations. The BAM-1020 may beequipped with other optionalsampling inlets. The BAM-1020 can also be configuredfor the monitoring of total suspendedparticulate (TSP).The Model BAM-1020 Beta Attenuation Mass MonitorThe BAM-1020 is manufacturedusing a time-proven designoffering its users thehighest level of reliability, performanceand agreement withthe FRM. This design insureslow maintenance and servicingcosts, as well as minimalmanpower requirements forits routine operation.OperationThe BAM-1020 is controlledby an advanced microprocessorsystem that makes it fullyautomatic. At the beginning ofthe sampling period, beta raytransmission is measuredacross a clean section of filtertape. This section of filter tapeis then mechanically advancedto the sampling inlet.Particulate matter is thendrawn into the sample inletand deposited on the filterpaper. At the completion ofthe sampling period, the filtertape is returned to its originallocation and the beta raytransmission is re-measured.The difference between thetwo measurements is used toCorporate Sales & Service: 1600 Washington Blvd., Grants Pass, OR 97526. determine, with exceptionalaccuracy, the particulate concentration. The mass density is measuredusing the technique of betaattenuation. A small 14 C betasource (60 μCi) is coupled to asensitive detector that countsthe emitted beta particles. The filter tape is placed betweenthe beta source and thedetector. As the mass depositedon the filter tape increases, the measured beta particlecount is reduced according to aknown equation.Design & ConstructionThe Filter Tape Transport Systemis based upon a designthat has been used for overtwo decades in Japan. Thetransport reflects the qualityand precision of superior design.Responding to the requirementsof current data validationrequirements, an improvedelectronic measurementsystem was developedusing the microprocessor controllerand data logger. All operationsof the unit are displayedwith the 8 line by 40character display. An RS-232 serial interface isused for data transfer and instrumentoperations status. This interface is often usedwith modem for remote communications.A second output-only port maybe used with a printer or computer.Output may be set fordata printout or one of two diagnosticmodes.Analog voltage or current outputsof concentration valueswith special error coding andcontact closures for error conditionsare included.Data ValidationThe BAM-1020 is alwaysevaluating its operation to ensurehighest confidence andthe highest quality data recoveryof any unit of its type. Theuser may select various criteriafor data validation, includingflow statistics, power failures, and error codes. An error log ismaintained with the date, hourand type of error. These dataare available during routinedata recovery. For the benefit of users notusing the serial port, the analogoutput informs the user thatthe BAM-1020 has a questionabout data or operation. Theoperator may then use the optionalmodem connection toverify diagnostics or a computerto interrogate the errorlog during the next site visit.Span CheckReliable, accurate measurementsare assured with theautomatic span check conductedeach cycle. Should theinstrument fail to perform tospecification an error is loggedin memory and data is flagged.Span measurements are madeby an automatic insertion of areference membrane in themeasurement path each hour.SpecificationsRange: 0-.1, .2, .25, .5, 1, 2,5, 10 mg/m 3Cycle:1 hourDetection Limit: 1 μg/m 3 on 24 hrs5 μg/m 3 on 1 hourResolution: ±1 μg/m 3Accuracy:Beta Source:Filter Tape:Flow Rate:Data Storage:Power:TemperatureRange:Dimensions:(mm)±8% of indication for1 hour mode, ±2%compared to FRM for24 hour mode14C, 60 μCiContinuous GlassFiber Type0-20 SLM useradjustable200 days(1 hour sample)100-230 VAC,50/60 Hz-30°C to +60°C(0-90% RH, Noncondensing)310(H)x430(W)x400(D)
