<strong>The</strong> <strong>Broaden<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Church</strong> In <strong>the</strong> U.S.A. 165only <strong>in</strong>fallible rule of faith and practice. If <strong>the</strong>y change <strong>the</strong>ir belief onthis po<strong>in</strong>t, Christian honor demands that <strong>the</strong>y should withdraw fromour m<strong>in</strong>istry. <strong>The</strong>y have no right to use <strong>the</strong> pulpit or <strong>the</strong> chair of <strong>the</strong>professor for <strong>the</strong> dissem<strong>in</strong>ation of <strong>the</strong>ir errors until <strong>the</strong>y are dealt withby <strong>the</strong> slow process of discipl<strong>in</strong>e. But if any do so act, <strong>the</strong>ir Presbyteriesshould speedily <strong>in</strong>terpose, and deal with <strong>the</strong>m for violation of ord<strong>in</strong>ationVOWS. 37In early 1893 Briggs was acquitted by <strong>the</strong> Presbytery ofNew York. <strong>The</strong> General Assembly of that year, however, found him guilty, suspend<strong>in</strong>g him from <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istry until heshould give satisfactory evidence of repentance. 38 <strong>The</strong> GeneralAssembly also reaffirmed <strong>the</strong> solemn Portland Deliveranceas to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>errancy of Scripture, as hav<strong>in</strong>g always been <strong>the</strong>belief of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong>; and „unanimously adopted‟ <strong>the</strong> resolution,„That <strong>the</strong> Bible, as we now have it, <strong>in</strong> its various translationsand versions, when freed from all errors and mistakes oftranslators, copyists, and pr<strong>in</strong>ters, is <strong>the</strong> very Word of God,and consequently wholly without error.‟ 39In 1894 Professor Henry P. Smith of Lane Sem<strong>in</strong>ary wassuspended from <strong>the</strong> Presbyterian m<strong>in</strong>istry for not hold<strong>in</strong>g to<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>errancy of <strong>the</strong> Scriptures when <strong>in</strong>terpreted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>irnatural and <strong>in</strong>tended sense. Dr. A. C. McGiffert of Union wasforced out of <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>in</strong> 1900 on similar charges. However,it is significant that none of <strong>the</strong> 87 signers of an officialprotest to <strong>the</strong> Assembly of 1893 aga<strong>in</strong>st suspend<strong>in</strong>g Briggsfor not hold<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>errancy of <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al manuscriptsof Scripture were ever prosecuted. <strong>The</strong> sentiment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> GeneralAssemblies of 1898 and 1899 was for peace, as opposedto prolonged controversy, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong>. 4037.
