<strong>The</strong> <strong>Broaden<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Church</strong> In <strong>the</strong> U.S.A. 193<strong>The</strong>re can be little doubt that <strong>in</strong>terdenom<strong>in</strong>ational fundamentalismand dispensationalism made a heavy contribution to thisstate of affairs, which greatly weakened <strong>the</strong> cause of those whoappealed to <strong>the</strong> Confession and <strong>the</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ctively PresbyterianConstitution of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong>. This factor—oddly coupled with ageneral feel<strong>in</strong>g of denom<strong>in</strong>ational loyalty, especially to <strong>the</strong>church organization—is of <strong>in</strong>calculable significance <strong>in</strong> expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>ghow <strong>the</strong> Broadened <strong>Church</strong> came to be.<strong>The</strong> years of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Broaden<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Church</strong> were truly what oneof its foremost advocates has called „a period of <strong>the</strong>ological<strong>in</strong>differentism.‟ 113 It was also a period when this <strong>in</strong>differentismbecame dom<strong>in</strong>ant <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong>. However, although thisbroadened church was controlled by a coalition of modernistsand <strong>in</strong>differentists, it still had many fundamentalists <strong>in</strong> it.It rema<strong>in</strong>ed to be seen what would become of <strong>the</strong>m. Whatcourse of action, if any, would <strong>the</strong>y pursue? Would <strong>the</strong>Broadened <strong>Church</strong> be broad enough for <strong>the</strong>m? What, ultimately, would be <strong>the</strong>ir relationship to this broadened andever broaden<strong>in</strong>g church?Would <strong>the</strong> <strong>Broaden<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Church</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S.A. eventuallysplit to produce a new beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g? Shortly before B. B.Warfield‟s death, J. Gresham Machen had one last conversationwith <strong>the</strong> man he had come to admire above all o<strong>the</strong>rs:In <strong>the</strong> course of <strong>the</strong> conversation I expressed my hope that to end<strong>the</strong> present <strong>in</strong>tolerable condition <strong>the</strong>re might be a great split <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>Church</strong>, <strong>in</strong> order to separate <strong>the</strong> Christians from <strong>the</strong> anti-Christian propagandists.„No,‟ he said, „you can‟t split rotten wood.‟ His expectationseemed to be that <strong>the</strong> organized <strong>Church</strong>, dom<strong>in</strong>ated by naturalism, would become so cold and dead, that people would come to see thatspiritual life could be found only outside of it, and that thus <strong>the</strong>remight be a new beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g.‟ 14To Warfield <strong>the</strong> <strong>Broaden<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Church</strong> was „rotten wood.‟ <strong>The</strong>truthfulness of his prophecy and <strong>the</strong> fate of his expectation is<strong>the</strong> story of <strong>the</strong> Presbyterian Separatist Movement.113.
