Annex 3 165- community health- alternative energy- rural <strong>in</strong>dustries- rural sanitation- non-formal education- social forestry & forest protection groupsRegional coverage: Sarthi operates <strong>in</strong> 229 villages <strong>in</strong> <strong>Gujarat</strong> <strong>in</strong> thedistricts of Dahod, Panch Mahals, Sabarkhanta and Baroda.Field Offices: Sarthi runs several small field offices, which also serveas tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g centres for members of the target group.Staff: Total number of permanent staff: 61 (15 female; 46 male), 30 ofthem are work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the head office. In addition, Sarthi has a numberof volunteer field workers.Experience <strong>in</strong> watershed development: Until the year 2000, Sarthihas been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the implementation of 27 watershed developmentprojects <strong>in</strong> 4 districts of <strong>Gujarat</strong>.Capacity build<strong>in</strong>g for other NGOs: -Network<strong>in</strong>g: Sarthi is a member of several NGO-networks.Overall characteristics and specifics: The <strong>in</strong>itial objective of Sarthiwas to improve the dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water situation <strong>in</strong> drought prone areas. Itthen shifted the focus to leadership development and the promotion oforganised action by groups of underprivileged sections of thecommunity, particularly women. The focus of the organisation lies onthe b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g of local natural and human resources to the regionalcontext, which means the support of local crafts, the employment oflocal personnel as field workers, and the development of a function<strong>in</strong>gregional community.Its projects are promoted from the field centres, and are managed <strong>in</strong> adecentralised way, us<strong>in</strong>g participatory plann<strong>in</strong>g methods. Sarthi showsgood knowledge about social methods and tools such as participativeapproaches and strategies for conflict resolution. The organisationapplies a qualitative monitor<strong>in</strong>g system. Comprehensive qualitativemonitor<strong>in</strong>g is done by an <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary team on a regular basis.Proper tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of the staff members is considered as crucial forsuccessful projects.
