Apartfrom benefitting, at least in part, from the post-referendum feel-good factor, the party was ofcourse successful in the Carlow Kilkenny by-election held on the same day.16
Sunday Times/Behaviour & Attitudes Opinion Poll SeriesBackgroundThe result of that by-election saw Bobby Aylward of Fianna Fáil capture 28% of the firstpreference vote, taking the seat on the ninth count ahead of Fine Gael’s David Fitzgerald.This win may prove to be more significant in the longer term than it initially appears. It wasthe first by-election win for Fianna Fáil since 1996, and the first time Fianna Fáil gained aseat from Fine Gael since the Donegal-Leitrim by-election exactly 45 years ago.Fianna Fáil will be hoping that this victory will mark a turning point in the party’s fortunes, astime begins to run out prior to the looming General Election.17
