Page 16 Del.Aware - January 31, 2014HIV curereturns todrawingboardBY WILLIAM MULLENStaff WriterDoctors and researchers aredumbfounded by two would-be“cured” HIV positive patients whohave relapsed back to the effects ofthis Immunodeficiency Virus andhad to resort back to medicine.HIV is a virus which leadsto AIDS and was known to haveno cure until the famous case ofTimothy Ray Brown. Referredto as the “Berlin Patient,” Brownwas esentially cured of HIV whilereceiving treatments for leukemiain 2007. A stem cell transplantfrom a donor with a rare geneticmutation that resists HIV infectioncured him of the virus.Unfortunately, this expensiveand life-threatening procedure isfar from ideal for the world’s 34million people affected by HIV.The results, however, did influencescientists to focus on a geneticmutation know as CCR5 delta32 as a target for possible genetherapy treatment.A similar event occurred to the“Boston patients” - two men whoreceived bone marrow transplantsthat appeared to rid themcompletely of HIV, but relapsedand had to go back to treatments.Along with HIV, bothpatients had a type of blood cancercalled lymphoma, the reasonthey received the bone marrowtransplant. Doctor TimothyHenrich said the virus’s comebackunderlined how ingenious HIVcan be in finding hiding places inthe body to evade attack effortsby the immune system andtreatments. It’s a setback for the patients,of course, but. . . the field has nowgained a lot more knowledge,”said Steven Deeks, a professor andHIV expert at the University ofCalifornia at San Francisco.Body temperature indicates emotionBY ANNA CHAMBERLINNews EditorScientists have recently concludedthat love really does give one the “warmfuzzies” and sadness being associated withthe “blues” is just as real. Researchershave discovered that heat within the bodycorrelates to a person’s emotions and mood.In a study that was recently performed, participants were asked to explain where theyfelt activity increasing or decreasing whileviewing stimuli, such as emotional words, stories, movies or facial expression. Theywere prompted with six “basic” emotionsand seven “complex” emotions [anger, fear, disgust, happiness, sadness, surprise, anxiety, love, depression, contempt, pride, shame and envy] as well as a neutral state.According to the information collected, love is the strongest of all emotions, with highwarm/cold activity in the head, chest andgroin region. Happiness, along with shameand anxiety, runs throughout the bodyincluding the legs. Depression is anotheremotion that is experienced throughout thebody, but it is represented by a darker, coldcolor which indicates little activity. Pride isBY NICOLE SIMERSONStaff WriterConvenience and innovation are goalsin mind at the Apple Company as it stridestowards modernizing their technology afterreleasing their new upgrade of IOS 7. Notonly has Apple developed a new internaloperating system (IOS) complete with anew layout as well as added features,it also has triggered ideas spurringin the minds of the creatorsbehind such a technologicallyadvanced program.Apple may soon release avoice-based image tagging andsearching application. Plannedto be released by the end of thisyear or next year, this applicationwill change the way we talk to Apple’sspeech interpretation and voice-baseddigital assistant, Siri. The new app would mainly affect Siri,a program that has been a staple in theApple company since it was first released. This voice-based digital assistant on Appleproducts may soon be able to locate andorganize photos from your own photofelt strongly in the chest which accounts forthe “knot” felt in a person’s chest when he orshe experiences a feeling of pride. Fear anddisgust manifests as warm and hot colorsin the head and throughout the stomach, indicating highactivity. Fearis felt morein the chest, while disgustis stronger inthe mouthand stomachr e g i o n .Contempt isstrongly feltin the headand also in thegroin area aswell. It isclear thatthe strongestemotions feltby humanssupply the most activity throughout thebody, and as a result a person feels thatbuildup of “warmth” or the draining feelinglibrary with just a couple commands.Currently, Siri can only search forphotos on the web (an example ofthis is shown to the right), as thecurrent IOS 7 does not contain thesoftware to allow her to recognizeand select photos from the usersown photo library. This up and coming programwouldn’t only be for speakingcommands to Siri, but itwould also help Appleproducts identify faceswith certain photos. The new program willbe able to recognizefaces, buildings andlandscapes simply basedon previously capturedimages on the device.Siri will be able to answerquestions about pictures concerningcolor, number of faces she recognizes,as well as differentiating betweensimple landscapes such as a grassylawn or a high-rise building.IOS 7 was the most recent internaloperating system released from Apple. Thisof being “cold.” Regardless of the extremityof the emotion felt, it is clear the emotionis felt directly in the body and it is not allpsychological.“Our emotional system in the brainsends signals tothe body so wecan deal withour situation,”says LauriNummenmaa,a psychologistat AaltoUniversity whoconducted thestudy of bodyheat correlatingto emotions.“Say yousee a snakeSource: Discovery Healthand you feelfear. Yournervous systemincreasesoxygen to yourmuscles and raises your heart rate so youcan deal with the threat. It’s an automatedsystem,” said Nummenmaa.Lighter areas indicate higher body temperatures;darker areas indicate lower body temperatures.Technology quickly picking up speedupgrade is entirely about organization andmodernizing the new software, and has beenespecially reprogramedfor photos.Thenew programnow consists of alarge database thatcollects informationabout when andwhere each photois taken. Eachphoto is geotagged, which means that ageographic locationis attached to eachphoto. At a recent pressconference, theupcoming updatesfor the Siri imagesearch update werediscussed.Jan ErikSolem and ThijsWillem Stalenhoef, employees of Apple, stated that he new program is somethinggreat in the making.
