Del.Aware - January 31, 2014 Page 17Apple delivers long awaited upgradeto professional desktop Mac ProBY NATHANAEL KINGScience & Technology EditorFollowing public outcry due to astagnated and outdated tower design, Applecaved to public demand and rolled out aradically redesigned Mac Pro Dec. 19.Due to high demand, the Mac Pro iscurrently in low supply and is backorderedwith a new release scheduled for sometimein February. The new Mac Pro is packed with newcomponents and even features a removablecase, which, in an atypical move on Apple’spart, allows users toupgrade some partsas they wish.Perhaps themost striking newfeature of theMac Pro is thecylindrical design, which goes hand inhand with anothernew feature, a unified thermal core. The core is triangularly shaped, and the cylindrical case wraps thecomponents of the computeraround the core. The coreabsorbs heat generated by theparts and disperses it througha vertically oriented fan. The fandraws air from under the computeritself and vents it out through the top.Proper air management is essentialto the fast and smooth operation of acomputer used by professionals for activitiessuch as 3D effects rendering, so the unifiedthermal core in the Mac Pro is promisingfor professionals. Also promising is the single Intel Xeonclass Ivy Bridge E5 processor, which can beconfigured to have a maximum of 12 cores. If you’re not a “computer person,” thismeans the Mac Pro is faster – much faster -than previous models of the Mac Pro.And if you are a computer personand one who enjoys attaching monitors toyour computer, the Mac Pro is even moreexciting, as it has Thunderbolt 2ports and dual-GPU setup whichallow it to support up to three4K displays. Additionally, withthere being six Thunderboltoutputs one can daisy-chain36 devices to the Mac Pro.Dang.Despite all these new features, some skeptics wonder if the Mac Prowill be the right tool for professionals. One major drawback, for the time being atleast, is that the computer is only as fast asadvertised with software designed for thedual-GPU setup, which is limited to Applesoftware like Final Cut Pro X.All is not lost for those who wish tohave the Mac Pro but are not using Applesoftware, though. Engadget, in their indepthreview of the Mac Pro, said “weshould see more apps retooled to play nicewith the Mac Pro’s dual-GPU setup. Just beprepared for some slim pickings if you buyone this week.”NSA creates backdoor into iPhonesBY TIM COYLEWorld News Co-EditorRecently, the National Security Agencyhas received backlash for watching overiPhone users through a programcalled DROPOUT JEEP. TheNSA is using this program tohack into iPhones and can evendownload malware and spywareonto these smartphones. The DROPOUT JEEP isa software implant used on theApple iPhone that utilizes modularmission applications to providespot on SIGINT functionality. This specific functionalityincludes the ability to pull files,SMS and contact list retrieval, voicemail, geolocation, hot mic, camera capture and cell towerlocation from the device. Throughthis program, all communications with theimplant can be converted and encrypted. The NSA has stated that they had a100 percent success rate in installing thismalware on the Apple iPhones. Manyquestions are still unanswered includingif Apple knew of this “backdoor” in theirproducts.Apple denied knowledge of thebackdoor in their products. They reachedout to many sources saying, “Apple hasnever worked with the NSA to create abackdoor in any of our products, includingiPhone. Additionally, we have been unawareof this alleged NSA program targetingour products. We care deeply about ourcustomers’ privacy and security. Our team iscontinuously working to make our productseven more secure, and we make it easy forcustomers to keep their software up to datewith the latest advancements. Whenever wehear about attempts to undermine Apple’sindustry-leading security, we thoroughlyinvestigate and take appropriate steps toprotect our customers. We will continueto use our resources to stay ahead ofmalicious hackers and defend ourcustomers from security attacks, regardless of who’s behind them.”Many tech companies havequestioned Apple’s denial because theyreportedly have not taken any actionsin trying to fix the problem. The NSA has been involved inmany scandals with a lot of newssurfacing from the whistleblower,Edward Snowden. Bradley Shear, alawyer who specializes in internetprivacy, stated that the NSA spywaremay be out of Apple’s control. ThisSource: threatjournal.com spyware is also involved in companieslike Google and Microsoft.“I don’t think any of the tech companieswould knowingly allow for NSA tapping, but the NSA has a know-how to do thingsthe tech community may not be aware of,”said Shear.SnapchatusernamesleakedBY RACHAEL SMITHStaff WriterOn New Year’s Eve, 4.6million Snapchat usernames andphone numbers were leaked by agroup called SnapchatDB.info.Snapchat is an app that allowsusers to snap a photo and send itto their friends, who are only ableto view it for up to ten secondsbefore it is gone forever.Gibson Security, an Internetsecurity resource, had warnedSnapchat about the security issueback in August, but the companyrefused to take measures tocompletely fix the issue. Theydid place some countermeasures, but still not enough to preventthe method that was used to leakthe users’ information. GibsonSecurity posted a public warningabout this issue over the holiday.Fortunately for the 4.6 millionusers, the hackers’ motivations didnot include spreading people’spersonal information; they saidthat they wanted to “raise thepublic awareness around the issue, and also put public pressure onSnapchat to get this exploit fixed.”“It is understandable that techstartups have limited resources, butsecurity and privacy should not bea secondary goal,” SnapchatDB.info said. “Security matters asmuch as user experience does.”To save the Snapchat users’privacy, the site removed the lasttwo digits of their phone numbers, but many people have the sameusername for multiple differentsites, so if someone wanted to findone of the users, it wouldn’t bethat difficult. After the leak, Snapchat madea few new changes to improvetheir users’ security and privacy. Now, they can opt out of the “FindFriends” feature where they canadd their phone number to makeit easier for friends to find and addthem.
