KILLEAGH-INCH MONDAY CLUBThe Killeagh-Inch Monday Club recently celebrated the fifthanniversary of their foundation. The club is for active retired personsand other interested parties and has grown from small beginningsto having a regular attendance of approximately fifty personsand less frequent association with about fifty others. Currentactivities include a regular monthly assembly - first Monday ofeach month at Killeagh Hall from 10.30 - 12.30pm. In conjunctionwith Active Age a Computer Course for beginners is ongoing atYoughal Youthreach, and the V.E.C. are sponsors of apainting/craft class based at Killeagh Hall. Plans are in train toattend a Health Seminar at Ballynoe, have a Reflexology/YogaCourse in Killeagh Hall commencing in late April, take a 4 daytrip to Co. Donegal in late June, and sing along with DanielO'Donnell on July 10th at Cork Opera House. On the home frontit is hoped to have workshops on Mobile Phone Usage and DigitalCamera Operations, and set up a Recreational Singing Group.The Birthday Party began with usual refreshments. The BirthdayCake was ceremoniously cut by Siobhán Foley and Paddy Ahern.Talks on Fire Protection and the upcoming Yoga Classes followed.As a finale John Cunningham of Youghal led a musical session.Current Committee members are Mary Collins, Kathleen Rohan,Helen Kennedy, Siobhán Foley, Eileen Meade, Mary Landers,Carmel Barry, Micheál Lee and Finbarr Motherway. Care andRepair is accessible to those over 65 and provides voluntary assistancewith such tasks as changing bulbs and fuses, hanging curtains,minor painting and decorating, lawn mowing, tacking carpetsor installing home security devices.Youghal Care and Repair evolved from the monthly CommunityAlert meetings, following a suggestion by regular attender PatCarey. The idea was pursued, assisted by Cumman na Daoine andin particular staff member Stacy Quinlivan and Ann MarieMcCarthy. Further help and support was provided by Age ActionIreland which, in partnership with Irish Life, has a programmecommitted to 'creating new services that help other people toacquire independence fulfilling lives for as long as they wish intheir own homes.'The Youghal service is now fully established and held its inauguralmonthly committee meeting last week. Desmond Davis, aWicklow man resident in Youghal for three years, is its first chairman,working alongside PRO and community garda, PeterQueally.Desmond, a former farmer (he once worked the farm that was latercultivated by Biddy and Miley in the Glenroe series) and now aMethodist minister, speaks with quiet pride and confidence of thenew resource. "We presently have a core group of about 15 volunteers,"he explains. They are aged roughly from 20's to 60's andinclude two females. Some are professional tradespeople and others,like me, are just general handymen but it's fair to say we havea wide range of abilities. All our volunteers are garda vetted," headds.Short waitOver 65's who seek to avail of the service are asked to contactCumman na Daoine with details of the task required. The groupwill select two volunteers to visit the client, matching abilities asclose as possible to the job at hand. "Waiting time should not bemore than a couple of days and ideally he jobs we undertakeshould take about two to three hours to complete," says Desmond.While the manpower comes free of charge the onus is on thehouseholder to provide the appropriate materials.The chairman is keen to stress that the service is confined to minormaintenance. "We don't attempt anything like electrical or plumbingjobs and certainly will not take work from tradespeople," heexplains. "Also, we don't climb ladders or undertake anything elsewith a personal safety risk. Computer and television repairs wouldalso be outside our remit. "Thus far the group has answered about a dozen calls amidst "muchappreciation," says Desmond. A gradual growth in requests can beexpected as the profile spreads. "It's still very new in Youghal anda lot of people are probably unaware of the service," Desmond surmises."In that sense we are not just eager for more people to callus but would also welcome new volunteers."SociableIn a world where age and alienation are too often associates thebenefits can extend beyond just painting a skirting board."Because we work in pairs, one volunteer might spend more timejust chatting over tea with the householder. Observes the chairman."So the social benefits cannot be underestimated.
