Artistic Director
The ability of performing arts organizations to
continually renew and challenge themselves artistically
is a key to their success and to maintaining the
strong and mutually fruitful relationship they have
with their audience. The National Ballet of Canada
has always prided itself on just this ability. In this, our
sixtieth year, we are well aware of the rich and varied
heritage the company embodies; but we are equally
aware of the need to explore, investigate and engage
with the present and the future of the art of dance.
It is one of the reasons the National Ballet is known
internationally for its artistic vigor and creativity.
The past year exemplifies this especially well. The
experience of working with Wayne McGregor on
staging his thrilling work Chroma was unforgettable
for everyone involved, and certainly for our audiences.
Our dancers threw themselves into the dauntingly
complex and physically demanding choreography
with an energy, focus and enthusiasm that astonished
even Wayne. And the excitement they felt in bringing
to life his extraordinary vision was translated to
everyone who saw it.
The same could be said for Russian Seasons,
Alexei Ratmansky’s choreographic paean to his
homeland and its rich cultural and religious heritage.
Complemented by a truly ravishing score, masterfully
conducted by David Briskin, the work was a sensation,
overwhelming our audiences throughout its run.
And finally, there was the enormous success, both
artistically and financially, of Alice’s Adventures in
Wonderland, a work that we co-produced with
England’s Royal Ballet. Christopher Wheeldon’s
imaginative adaptation of the famous Lewis Carroll
story was a thrill to watch as it came together and
finally worked its magic onstage. Every show was
sold out to ecstatic audiences and overall it set new
box office records.

All of these works were important in themselves,
but staging them has also laid the groundwork for
working with all of these extraordinary artists on future
ballets, the first of which we will see realized this year
with Alexei’s new Romeo and Juliet.
Other highlights from 2010/2011 were the return of
the gloriously refurbished Onegin, the always popular
Erik Bruhn Prize and the continued success of our
outreach programmes through our own initiatives
YOU dance and Dance About and our participation in
Culture Days.
As always, I want to thank the dancers, musicians,
administrative and production staff for their stellar
work, and our patrons, subscribers, volunteers and
board members for their tireless efforts and
commitment to the company.
Finally, a word of special thanks to Lucille Joseph,
our Board Chair for the past three years who is
completing her term this year. She has made an
invaluable contribution to the company in her time
with us and I want to wish her all the best in her
future endeavours.

Chair of the Board of Directors
The 2010/2011 season was one of our most exciting
and memorable, both artistically and financially. A
strong box office, combined with cost saving measures
and the continued generousity of our donors, gave us
a surplus of $49,000 on a budget of $26.8 million.
Artistically, under Karen Kain’s inspired and forwardlooking
guidance, we staged works that were
groundbreaking both for the artistic achievements
they represented and for the overwhelming audience
response they received. Wayne McGregor’s Chroma,
Alexei Ratmansky’s Russian Seasons and Christopher
Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
displayed the company at its best, with the dancers,
musicians and production personnel demonstrating
why The National Ballet of Canada enjoys the high
reputation it does.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was our first
co-production with The Royal Ballet (UK). This fact is
significant in itself. Given the highly complicated
production values, original orchestral score and
brilliant choreography in Alice, the process was
smooth and cordial on both sides. This ballet had an
extraordinary success with audiences and critics – it
was a smash in England and established a new box
office record here. Another high point of the year
was the opening of the magnificent Gretchen Ross
Production Centre. An efficient, purpose-built, state
of the art facility for constructing and storing the
company’s sets was something long needed. Thanks
to the generosity of our lead donors, Gretchen Ross
and Jerry and Joan Lozinski, we now own it. This

represents a truly important milestone, not just for our
production personnel, but for the company as a whole.
Finally, I want to extend my most sincere thanks
to Lucille Joseph, our Board Chair for the past three
years, who is completing her term this year. Lucille
has been a strong and helpful guiding presence. Her
ideas, passion, enthusiasm and hard work have been
an immeasurable support to the company and her
time as Chair will be remembered with gratitude and
affection by everyone who worked with her.

From the diverse perspectives of a donor, subscriber,
board member, international balletomane, artist or
accountant in looking over the 2010/11 year of The
National Ballet of Canada, the conclusion would be
the same: It was an outstanding year. Best of all, the
success was achieved by leading from our strength,
the artistic core of the company. From the first night
of the North American debut of Wayne McGregor’s
Chroma which opened the season, to the last longsold-out
performance of the wildly acclaimed Alice’s
Adventures in Wonderland, it was a year that
astonished and delighted audiences and donors –
and even the artists themselves. It is hard to believe
that only a few short years ago we sat around the
board table wondering how to create buzz in the
community about the National Ballet!
Thanks to the company’s investment in some of the
world’s most anticipated new ballets (possible only
due to our brilliant Artistic Director Karen Kain), and
to the strategic investment in our new production
facility (thanks to the leadership of Gretchen Ross
and Jerry and Joan Lozinski), solid financial results
followed, enabling us to achieve a positive bottom
line despite the continuing uncertain economic
climate. As a Board we were sometimes nervous in
approving these investments, but we knew that the
best route to financial stability was to invest in the
future greatness of the company. These investments
are already paying dividends by expanding audiences
and engaging donors here at home, and by paving
the way to once again present the National Ballet on
the world stage.
As I complete my three-year term as Chair of the
Board of Directors and reflect back on what has
been, on the surface, three challenging years in which
to build a great ballet company, it is remarkable
to see what has been accomplished. What a privilege
to have been part of the Board of Directors over
these last eight years. I am very proud of what we
have accomplished together. I’m sure you will agree
that the prime reason behind this achievement is
that at The National Ballet of Canada we have the
“A Team” – Artistic Director Karen Kain, Executive
Director Kevin Garland, Music Director David Briskin,
the outstanding management team, the dancers,
musicians, staff, volunteers, donors and of course the
Board of Directors. My thanks to each and every one
of them for making my term on the Board, including
as Chair, so enjoyable and rewarding.
In particular, having been “chief volunteer” for the
last three years, sincere thanks to the Board members,
major donors, leaders of the Volunteer Committee,
the Patrons' Council Committee, and the Gala
Committee who have been such wonderful colleagues
and friends. The company is truly blessed to have
this network of amazing individuals working tirelessly
to help make the National Ballet a Canadian arts
organization that ranks amongst the finest in the world.
With the 60th anniversary year beginning and the
next new ballet, Alexei Ratmansky’s Romeo and
Juliet, about to open, I have no doubt that the
coming year and the years that follow will continue
to be marked by new artistic heights, growing donor
and audience engagement, and by continued
financial stability.

A Box Office Record:
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Among the biggest stories of the 2010/11 season
was the North American premiere of Christopher
Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland, a
co-production with The Royal Ballet in London. After
the successful debut at Covent Garden in February
2011, Mr. Wheeldon traveled to the Walter Carsen
Centre to cast and rehearse the dancers of The National
Ballet of Canada in the many roles in this production.
Behind the scenes, wardrobe and production staff
adapted the costumes, sets and lighting from the
London show for Toronto’s needs. The enormous
effort to bring Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to life
at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts
was equalled only by the excitement surrounding the
final product.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland surpassed all
expectations, stunning critics and audiences with
its inventive choreography and captivating sets and
effects. The National Ballet sold over 25,000 tickets
for the 13-performance run and earned over
$2.2 million in box-office revenue, making Alice’s
Adventures in Wonderland the highest grossing main
season production in the history of the company.
Tickets for this production were completely sold out.

Stunning North American Premiere:
Chroma
The National Ballet of Canada believes that the
acquisition of new productions is essential for dance
to remain a vital and evolving art form. In November
2010, the National Ballet presented the North American
premiere of Wayne McGregor’s brilliant contemporary
ballet, Chroma. Set to the music of Joby Talbot and
The White Stripes, Chroma is a kinetic exploration of
the human body against the minimalist set design of
architect John Pawson. Chroma is back by popular
demand in June 2012 to headline the spring mixed
programme.

Alexei Ratmansky: Russian Seasons
Alexei Ratmansky is among the world’s most visionary and sought-after choreographers. His works have been
staged by many dance companies, including American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet and The Bolshoi
Ballet. In March 2011, The National Ballet of Canada presented the Canadian premiere of Mr. Ratmansky’s
Russian Seasons, a ballet featuring the music of Russian composer Leonid Desyatnikov. Russian Seasons
offered Toronto audiences an introduction to Mr. Ratmansky’s work before his Romeo and Juliet has its world
premiere with the National Ballet in November 2011.
Russian Seasons was made possible in part by a grant from the New Creations Fund of The National Ballet
of Canada, Endowment Foundation.

Engaging our Audiences:
Education and Outreach Programmes
As Canada’s premier dance company, The National Ballet of Canada seeks to foster an appreciation for the
performing arts in communities nationwide. Reaching out to young people and promoting the expressive
possibilities of dance are efforts consistent with the National Ballet’s mandate to encourage a flourishing
cultural presence in Canada. To further these important goals, the National Ballet has dynamic education and
outreach programmes that engage young people in innovative ways.
YOU dance
Established in 2007, YOU dance introduces young
people in the Greater Toronto Area to ballet through
workshops and performances in the Betty Oliphant
Theatre at Canada’s National Ballet School. Using a
multi-layered approach, YOU dance engages students
in grades four to six through interactive exercises
and 16 moderated ballet performances provided
by members of the RBC Apprentice Programme. In
2010/2011, the National Ballet expanded the YOU dance
programme to include extended residencies in the
Northern Ontario communities of Sudbury, Thunder
Bay and Parry Sound. The YOU dance residencies in
these communities saw a total of 64 workshops, 10
student shows and five master classes, reaching over
4,000 students and 1,200 audience members.

Dance About
Dance About is the National Ballet’s longest-running
youth outreach programme, having staged
performances in Ontario schools for the past 40 years.
Four dancers, a piano accompanist and a narrator
guide students through a day in the life of a dancer,
including ballet class, pointe work, partnering,
make-up and wardrobe. Designed for students in
kindergarten through grade six, Dance About provides
a positive and formative experience of live ballet
within the students’ familiar school environment. In
2010/11, Dance About held nine performances for
2,700 students in the Greater Toronto Area.

The Stratford Joint Project
Started in 2009/10, the Stratford Joint Project is a collaboration between the Stratford Shakespeare Festival
and the National Ballet. Four high school classes join with choreographers and actors to create innovative,
non-verbal interpretations of a play and a ballet. The project culminates in a day of workshops where students
perform their own works and receive feedback from their peers.
Exploring Ballet
Exploring Ballet is a workshop-based initiative that
organizes dance presentations in schools across
Toronto where socio-economic challenges are
common. Designed for students in grades one
through six, the interactive workshops are led by a
National Ballet dancer or a professional choreographer.
In 2010/11, over 600 students participated in 25
Exploring Ballet workshops.
Exploring Ballet is made possible by an anonymous
donor to The National Ballet of Canada.
Tutu Project
In 2010/11, the National Ballet launched the Tutu
Project, an outreach initiative in celebration of the
company’s 60th Anniversary Season. The Tutu Project
involves the creation and display of 60 unique tutus
throughout the 2011/12 season, including several
from great moments in the company’s history. The
final exhibit will feature tutus created by professional
and emerging artists, community groups and visitors
to such events as Word on the Street and the Pride
Parade.
The Tutu Project is generously sponsored by
The Volunteer Committee, The National Ballet of Canada.
Master Class with
Rex Harrington
To celebrate Culture Days, the National Ballet
presented a Master Class led by former Principal
Dancer and current Artist-in-Residence Rex Harrington
via live webcast. On September 25, 2010, ballet
students across Canada participated in a class that
streamed live on the internet from the company’s
rehearsal studios at the Walter Carsen Centre in
Toronto. Eighteen dance studios from across the
country participated in the event.
DanceBreak
Since 2007, DanceBreak has offered $30 same-day
tickets to audience members between the ages of
16 and 29. Today, there are 23,501 members of
DanceBreak. In 2010/11, DanceBreak enjoyed a new
opportunity to participate in the National Ballet’s
annual fundraising gala, MAD HOT, through the MAD
HATTER Best Hat Challenge. DanceBreak members
wore hats of their own design to the gala and guests
voted via text for their favourites. The DanceBreak
member with the most votes joined the VIP dinner
onstage with the artists of the National Ballet.

Grand Opening:
The Gretchen Ross Production Centre
In 2009/10, The National Ballet of Canada purchased
an industrial building at 155 Nantucket Boulevard in
Toronto for the construction and storage of its many
valuable productions. With the help of dedicated
community members, donors and staff, the National
Ballet has since transformed this building into an
enviable tailor-made space for the company’s
production team.
Opening ceremonies for the Gretchen Ross
Production Centre began on Friday April 29, 2011
and were preceded by an onsite dinner for senior
artistic staff and production centre lead donors,
including Board Members Gretchen Ross and
Jerry Lozinski, whose leadership gifts facilitated the
purchase of the building. Donors also enjoyed an

exclusive open house with staff-led tours of the new
59,000 square foot facility. The celebrations continued
with a public open house on Saturday April 30, 2011.

the National Ballet’s production staff were on hand to
answer questions relating to their specific areas
of expertise.
The National Ballet is deeply appreciative of the
generous contributions from Gretchen Ross, Jerry
and Joan Lozinksi and Canada Cultural Spaces
toward the initial purchase of the new facility. The
National Ballet launched the Capital Campaign,
“Building Great Ballet,” in 2010/11 to raise the
remaining funds for the building.

Karen Kain Receives
Distinguished Artist Award
Artistic Director Karen Kain received a Distinguished Artist Award from the International Society for the
Performing Arts on June 17, 2011. Presented by Dr. James Fleck, O.C., the award recognizes performing
artists who have made an outstanding contribution of talent, artistry, dedication and service to the world of
performing arts. Founded in 1949, the International Society for the Performing Arts is a not-for-profit
international network of performing arts professionals with the shared goal of strengthening the arts

Benjamin Bowman
Appointed Concertmaster
On October 13, 2010, The National Ballet of Canada
announced the appointment of Benjamin Bowman
as Concertmaster of The National Ballet of Canada
Orchestra. Born in Illinois and raised in Manitoba,
Mr. Bowman has performed to critical acclaim
throughout North America, Europe and Asia. He also
holds the position of Associate Concertmaster with
the Canadian Opera Company orchestra, performs
regularly as a soloist and is a member or frequent
guest artist for some of the country’s best chamber
music ensembles, including the twice Grammynominated
ARC, Art of Time and Amici.

Prize in Hanover
In April 2011, Guest Artist-in-Residence Guillaume
Côté was awarded third prize at the prestigious Ballet
Society Hanover’s 25th International Competition in
Germany for his piece, No. 24. Performed by Principal
Dancer Aleksandar Antonijevic and Second Soloist
Elena Lobsanova, No. 24 was created originally for
The National Ballet of Canada's Choreographic Lab in
2010. The piece was restaged for the National Ballet’s
sixth annual fundraising gala, MAD HOT Wonderland,
on June 21, 2011.
Sonia Rodriguez Wins
Spain’s Officer’s Cross
of the Civil Merit
In May 2011, Principal Dancer Sonia Rodriguez was
awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Civil Merit by His
Majesty, King Juan Carlos I of Spain in recognition of
her extraordinary achievements in dance and her
promotion of Spanish culture abroad. The Cross of
the Civil Merit is one of the highest distinctions in
the arts and was presented to Ms. Rodriguez by the
Ambassador of Spain to Canada, His Excellency
Eudaldo Mirapeix at a ceremony in Ottawa. Born in
Toronto, Ms. Rodriguez grew up in Spain, studying
dance in Madrid with Pedra la Cruz and at the
Princess Grace Academy in Monaco before joining
the National Ballet in 1990.

The Ninth International Competition for
The Erik Bruhn Prize
The National Ballet of Canada hosted the Ninth International Competition for The Erik Bruhn Prize on March
5, 2011 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Corps de Ballet members Shino Mori and Naoya
Ebe represented the company and Second Soloist Robert Stephen competed for the Choreographic Prize with
his contemporary piece, Passacaglia. Participating companies included American Ballet Theatre, Royal Danish
Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, and for the first time ever, The Hamburg Ballet. New to the 2011 Competition was the
Audience Choice Award, which allowed audience members
to vote for their favourite male and female dancers as well
as their favourite new contemporary work.
Congratulations to Maria Baranova of The Hamburg
Ballet and Joseph Gorak of American Ballet Theatre for
winning the Erik Bruhn Prize and to Demis Volpi of Stuttgart
Ballet for winning the Choreographic Prize. The Audience
Choice awards went to Elisa Badenes of Stuttgart Ballet,
Daniel Camargo of Stuttgart Ballet and Robert Stephen of
The National Ballet of Canada.

with The National Ballet of Canada
Principal Dancer Greta Hodgkinson celebrated her 20th
anniversary with The National Ballet of Canada during
the 2010/11 season. Artistic Director Karen Kain
recognized this achievement with a Dancer Celebration
Award sponsored by Birks and by dedicating the spring
mixed programme to Ms. Hodgkinson. “Celebrating
Greta” featured George Balanchine’s Mozartiana, Jerome
Robbins’ Other Dances and Twyla Tharp’s In The Upper
Room. Together with her partner Zdenek Konvalina, Ms.
Hodgkinson appeared in every performance of Other
Dances, a work created originally for Mikhail Baryshnikov
and Natalia Makarova. Born in Providence, Rhode Island
and trained at the Festival Ballet of Rhode Island and

Rebekah Rimsay
Celebrates 20 Years
with The National
Ballet of Canada
One of The National Ballet of Canada’s finest
actresses, First Soloist Rebekah Rimsay celebrated
20 years with the company in 2010/11. Artistic
Director Karen Kain honoured Ms. Rimsay with a
Dancer Celebration Award sponsored by Birks in
recognition of her achievement. Born in Fort Collins,
Colorado, Ms. Rimsay trained at Canada’s National
Ballet School before joining the National Ballet in
1990. She was promoted to First Soloist in 1998.
Ms. Rimsay has created a number of featured roles
including Virginia in An Italian Straw Hat, Her Other
Stepsister in Cinderella and Dot in The Contract
(The Pied Piper).

On Tour in Québec
The 2010/11 touring season was particularly special for
The National Ballet of Canada. For the first time in 20
years, the company toured to Québec City and to Montréal,
where it last performed in 2003. The National Ballet
performed an extraordinary program of works by two
Canadian choreographers – Marie Chouinard’s
24 Preludes by Chopin and Crystal Pite’s Emergence.
National Ballet Board Member Suzanne Sauvage was
instrumental in helping to bring the company back to
Montréal after an extended absence. Ms. Sauvage, who is
President and CEO of Montréal’s McCord Museum, hosted
a pre-performance reception in her home on opening
night. She joined other board members, led by Lucille
Joseph, who also traveled to Québec with the company.
The group spent an afternoon with choreographer Marie
Chouinard, who provided a fascinating tour of her studios.

In Memory: Lois Smith, O.C.
On January 22, 2011, Canada lost one of the founding
members of The National Ballet of Canada, former
Principal Dancer Lois Smith, at the age of 81. Ms.
Smith began her training at the BC School of Ballet
before joining the National Ballet with her husband
David Adams in 1951. As a Principal Dancer, Ms.
Smith performed all the leading classical roles in such
ballets as Swan Lake, Giselle, La Sylphide, Cinderella,
The Sleeping Beauty and Coppélia. After retiring from
the company in 1969, Ms. Smith opened The Lois
Smith School of Dance, later part of the Performing
Arts Program of George Brown College. Ms. Smith
was the Chairman of the Dance Program at George
Brown College from 1979 to 1988. She was made an
Officer of the Order of Canada in 1980. In 1998, Ms.
Smith received a bronze star on Vancouver’s Granville
Street from the BC Hall of Fame in recognition of
her extraordinary contributions to dance. She will be
deeply missed.

Young Professionals in Support of Dance
On March 22, 2011, The National Ballet of Canada launched an exciting new development initiative for young
professionals. Turnout is a group for young people who share a passion for the arts and an interest in
connecting with other influential leaders in their fields. Members enjoy rare access to the artists of the National
Ballet and attend exclusive events to learn more about dance. Annual donations help to build the future of the
National Ballet by supporting the RBC Apprentice Training Programme.
The Nutcracker: 15 Magical Years
James Kudelka’s production of The Nutcracker had
its 15th anniversary in 2010/11. Created in 1995,
The Nutcracker sets E.T.A Hoffman’s holiday story
in 19th century Russia and follows Misha and Marie
on a magical journey as they battle the Mouse Tsar,
travel to the glittering winter realm of the Snow
Queen, visit the magnificent palace of the Sugar Plum
Fairy and much more. With breathtaking sets and
costumes by Santo Loquasto, Mr. Kudelka’s
adaptation of this holiday classic is among the most
lavish and finely choreographed in the world. The
Nutcracker has become an annual tradition for many
families. Over 814,635 people have attended The
Nutcracker in 15 years and it has earned $38 million
at the box office.

In September of 2010, Principal Dancers Heather
Ogden and Guillaume Côté received the inaugural
Rolex Dancers First Award. Karen Kain and Victor
Royce, President and CEO of Rolex Canada,
presented the awards. The selection committee voted
unanimously to recognize Ms. Ogden for her
extraordinary performances in The Sleeping Beauty,
Swan Lake and Opus 19/The Dreamer, and Mr. Côté
for his outstanding performance as the Prince in The
Sleeping Beauty.
The Rolex Dancers First Award recognizes an
outstanding performance by a male and a female
dancer in the previous season, as decided by a committee
of members of the Artistic staff. Rolex Canada
sponsored the ward for the first time in 2010/11.
The Rolex Dancers First Award is an essential part
of the Dancers First programme, which supports the
dancers of The National Ballet of Canada by funding
resources directed to artistic development and health
and wellness programmes.

Down the Rabbit Hole:
MAD HOT Wonderland
The National Ballet of Canada held its sixth annual fundraising gala on June 21, 2011 at the Four Seasons
Centre for the Performing Arts. MAD HOT Wonderland raised over $1 million for the company. The evening
kicked-off with a performance of works selected by Artistic Director Karen Kain exclusively for the gala, including
excerpts from Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Mikhail Fokine’s Dying Swan,
performed by Principal Dancer Greta Hodgkinson in celebration of her 20th anniversary with the company.
The festivities continued offstage with a Wonderland-themed reception featuring a signature cocktail,
the “White Rabbit,” served in elegant teacups. VIP guests joined the artists of the National Ballet onstage for
a gourmet meal created by star chef Mark McEwan. MAD HOT Wonderland celebrated the powers of
imagination that inform so much of what the National Ballet achieves each year as one of Canada’s leading

Patrons’ Council Season Closing Party:
Promotions and Awards
On June 12, 2011, The National Ballet of Canada
held its annual Patrons’ Council Season Closing
Party at the home of gracious hosts Sherri and Philip
Lieberman. Patrons mingled with the staff and
artists of the National Ballet in celebration of a
tremendous 2010/11 season.
Among the most anticipated elements of the
Season Closing Party is the announcement of dancer
promotions and awards. Artistic Director Karen Kain
shared the following company promotions for the
2011/12 season: Jillian Vanstone was promoted to
Principal Dancer. Elena Lobsanova, McGee Maddox,
Robert Stephen and Brett van Sickle were promoted
to First Soloist. Naoya Ebe and Chelsey Meiss were
promoted to Second Soloist. Skylar Campbell, Shaila
D’Onofrio and Jackson Dwyer were promoted to the
Corps de Ballet from the RBC Apprentice Programme.
Executive Director Kevin Garland announced the
winner of the 2011 David Tory Award: Senior Ballet
Master Peter Ottmann. Named for the late David Tory,
former Vice-Chair of the National Ballet’s Board of
Directors, the award recognizes individuals who best
exemplify values of compassion and professionalism
in conjunction with strong leadership.
Ann Hogarth, Chair of the Patrons’ Council
Committee, presented the 2011 Patron Award of Merit
to Corps de Ballet members Sarah Elena Wolff and
Dylan Tedaldi. The award recognizes one male and
one female member of the Corps de Ballet or the
Apprentice Programme for their extraordinary progress
over the year.
This year, Karen Kain commemorated important
career milestones for Principal Dancer Greta
Hodgkinson and First Soloist Rebekah Rimsay with
Dancer Celebration Awards, sponsored by Birks. Both
Ms. Hodgkinson and Ms. Rimsay celebrated 20 years
with the National Ballet during the 2010/11 season.

The National Ballet of Canada,
Endowment Foundation
The 2010/2011 financial year was another year of strong progress
for the Endowment Foundation. Total assets, with investments
valued at market, grew by 17.2% ($6.6 million) from $32.7 million
as at June 30, 2010 to $38.3 million as at June 30, 2011, an alltime
high, and the grant to the National Ballet reached a new high
watermark at $1.05 million. After being forced to suspend the grant
during the crisis, it was a great pleasure to pay out a second
consecutive record grant.
The strong growth in total assets reflected continued success in
attracting new gift contributions from donors ($2.3 million), another
matching grant from the Endowment Incentives component of the
Canada Cultural Investment Fund ($1.4 million) and a good net
investment performance ($4.0 million or 14.0 percent).
On behalf of The National Ballet of Canada, Endowment
Foundation, I would like to thank our donors for their continued
investment in the future strength and excellence of the company through their support for the
Endowment Foundation. Donor contributions are the lifeblood of the Endowment Foundation’s
growth, both in their own right and because of the matching funds they attract from Government.
Our Development team deserves enormous credit for their improved cultivation and
stewardship of donors and for their skill in matching gift opportunities to donor wishes. Most
importantly, however, our ability to attract financial support from donors reflects their engagement
with the artistry they experience in the theatre and the confidence they have that the company’s
financial affairs are well managed. On this score, we could not be better served. Karen Kain’s
extraordinary programming and artistic leadership have delivered performances that have both
thrilled and challenged audiences and the senior management team under Kevin Garland has
worked arduously to maintain financial discipline in what have been truly difficult times. I join
Lucille Joseph in heartily congratulating Karen and Kevin for a stunning artistic and financial success
in 2010/11.
The disciplined and conservative investment approach adopted by the Endowment Foundation
board before the financial crisis has continued to serve us well. While we did not avoid losses
during the worst of the crisis, our funds significantly outperformed their benchmarks, helping us
preserve capital and putting us in a stronger position to participate in the recovery. As markets
turned, the Endowment Foundation’s investments have not only fully recovered, but a solid
cushion to protect against future market dislocations has been re-established. While there are
still many economic headwinds and systemic risks to contend with in today’s post-crisis world,
I believe the Endowment Foundation is better placed than ever to fulfill its role in providing stable
and predictable support to the National Ballet.
It is my sincere pleasure to thank the Endowment Foundation board for their diligent efforts
and wise counsel over the past year and to recognize and thank our donors for their generous
and unwavering support. Without you, the National Ballet’s current success and future prosperity
would not be possible.
