PAGE 4HARRY COLLINGE HIGH SCHOOL“STUDENTMARKS IN GRADE9 WILL IMPACTWHAT COURSESSTUDENTS MAYREGISTER FOR INTHEIR GRADE 10YEAR.”GUIDANCE INFORMATION: MRS. ARMSTRONG/MR. BAXTERMarch 2011Semester one is over andsemester two has begun. The school year steadilymoves along! Grade 12’shave received their semesterone Diploma Exammarks from Alberta Educationand are now focusingon semester twocourses as they continue toprepare for their futuresafter high school. At thistime grade 12’s are fullyaware that Prom is fastapproaching. Grade 12 is abusy year and studentsoften struggle to stay focusedon their studieswhile dealing with all theother influences in theirlives. Helping your grade12 keep some balance inhis/her busy life is an importantrole for parentswho have more life experienceand also have thatperspective that manyyoung people may not possess.Grade 12’s do continueto need that importantparental guidance –even if they don’t alwaysappreciate it!On Monday, March 7 therewas a meeting for parentsof grade 9 students. At themeeting the counsellorsand Mr. Fehler providedinformation parents mayneed to assist their grade9’s in choosing courses forgrade 10. Grade 9’s completethe course “Preparingfor High School” duringthe school year and thiscourse gives the studentsthe information they needto understand how tochoose appropriate coursesin their grade 10 timetables. At the March 7 meetingwe shared Alberta Educationguidelines for achievingHigh School Diplomasand Alberta Education andHarry Collinge recommendationsfor choosing highschool courses. This informationincluded the differencebetween academicand general courses andthe criteria one should takeinto consideration whenselecting appropriatecourses. The goal of theevening was to providebackground information tohelp parents work withtheir child to build an appropriatetimetable as theybegin their High Schooleducation. We all understandthe importance ofbuilding a strong foundationin one’s high schoolprogram and we want tomake sure our grade 9 studentsget off to a goodstart in high school. If youmissed the meeting pleasecheck the Harry Collingewebsite for informationand/ or get in touch withthe counsellors. It is important both parentsand students understandstudent marks ingrade 9 will impact whatcourses students mayregister for in their grade10 year. Basically if astudent has a mark of65% or higher they mayregister in the 10-1course; 10-1 is consideredthe academic levelcourse. If the earnedmark in grade 9 is 64%or lower then the studentmust register in the 10-2course which is the generallevel course andmeets all the requirementsfor a High SchoolDiploma. Students andparents need to be awareof these guidelines.Parents are invited to visitthe Harry Collinge websitefor registration informationfor students who arepresently in grades 9,10and 11. Students will beinformed when they maybegin the process of registeringfor courses for the2011-12 school year. Please contact us if wemay be of assistance toyou as we move into thisimportant time in theschool year.

Students pay a toonie forthe privilege of wearing a hat on designated hat days. This money is then collected and at the end of the year money is sent tothe Red Cross to help the devastated earthquake victims in Haiti and the flood victims in Pakistan. Students/staff enjoy wearingtheir hats and donating to a worthwhile cause. Last year over $750 was raised by the students and we are well on the wayto matching that this year. I would like to thank Corrine Strawberry for undertaking this fund raiser.
