Designing for Theatre in the RoundThe use of the arena configuration in theTelus Studio Theatre is an honest and directresponse to the existing architecture. Frommy recent lighting design experience in thespace for The Madonna Painter, I noticed a lotof great qualities, as well as unique designpotentials that set the Telus apart from allother black box or conventional prosceniumstyle of theatres. The Telus has quite a few flaws as a theatrein terms of practicality (for example, thelack of an overhead grid and efficientrigging system), but nonetheless, it is a veryinteresting and special piece of architecture. For example, the unique “flexibility” of theTelus comes from the 12 movable towers thathold the audience seating, but such qualityis only true to the extent that half of thoseremain attached to each other to form asemi-arena of box style seating, from whichthere is no escape. The fact that there are three separate floorsof seating in each tower creates an enormoussense of height and closure within such asmall space. This imposing sense of heightis not only to be felt by the performers butmost importantly impacts greatly on how theaudience perceives the space for the durationof the performance. Most often for the audience members on thetowers, they have to sit on the edge of theirseats and lean on the ledge that surroundsthe seats (in groups of 4) for the entire showin order to be able to see what is happeningdown below on “stage.”If those unique spatial features of the theatreare appropriately utilized and appreciated,it could reward any production with a greattheatrical experience rather than imposinga rigidly fixed set into the already limitingspace. For this reason, I wanted to take thisspecial opportunity and emphasize designingon the ground, embracing the floor thatalready exists as the central focal point of thespace. This, in turn, will create a theatricalexperience that is unique to the Telus. Itis also an exploration and experiment tochallenge the conventional “forth-wallpicture-frame”perception of theatricalspaces with a minimalist set and projectedstage floor. The use of light and multimediaimagery from multiple projectors will morphand sculpt the space into different locales asthe story unfolds. The design of the set andthe stage itself only exist for the duration ofthe play, making all a temporal experiencejust as any live performance.by Mandi LauSet and Projection DesignerOriginally posted on our Theatre at UBC blog:https://blogs.ubc.ca/theatre/2011/01/07/designing-for-theatre-in-the-round/
