IntroductionThis booklet fulfils <strong>the</strong> need identified in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Botanical</strong> <strong>Society</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>British</strong> Isles’ 2006 Development Plan for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Society</strong> to have amedium to long term programme for its recording, surveillance<strong>and</strong> monitoring activities. This is important not only for steering<strong>the</strong> <strong>Society</strong>’s future activities, including <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> itsPlant Unit, but also to attract future funding <strong>and</strong> prepare for a thirdAtlas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>British</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Irish</strong> <strong>flora</strong> due for publication around 2024.It sets out briefly <strong>the</strong> <strong>Society</strong>’s current work in <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>potential use <strong>of</strong> its data <strong>and</strong> information <strong>and</strong> defines plannedfuture work.This booklet has been produced by <strong>the</strong> BSBI Plant Unit underguidance from <strong>the</strong> BSBI Records Committee <strong>and</strong> in consultationwith BSBI vice-county recorders. It was approved by BSBI Councilin March <strong>2010</strong>. Supporting guidelines <strong>and</strong> resources available torecorders are highlighted in bold in <strong>the</strong> text <strong>and</strong> listed separatelyin <strong>the</strong> Annex on page 19.Overall aim <strong>of</strong> this bookletTo share with vice-county recorders (VCRs), o<strong>the</strong>r volunteers <strong>and</strong>partners clear guidelines for plant recording in Britain <strong>and</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong>over <strong>the</strong> period <strong>2010</strong>-<strong>2020</strong>, taking into account <strong>the</strong> scale, methods<strong>and</strong> coverage <strong>of</strong> recording needed to meet <strong>the</strong> <strong>Society</strong>’sobjectives.More specifically:To provide recorders with a clear timescale <strong>and</strong> programmefor recording activities that allows local activities to beplanned around national initiativesTo provide guidance on <strong>the</strong> BSBI’s preferred approaches torecording (which will be reflected in <strong>the</strong> amended BSBIguidelines <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> supporting material highlighted throughout<strong>the</strong> paper – see Annex, p.19)To plan <strong>the</strong> rationalisation <strong>of</strong> data h<strong>and</strong>ling, mobilisation <strong>and</strong>provision both internally <strong>and</strong> externally4
