Levi-Zadadone by multiplying amounts in the lower range by aconstant (largest bin value <strong>of</strong> larger range divided bylargest bin value <strong>of</strong> smaller range).ResultsCollecting volatile emissions from insects by SPMEand analysis by GC–MSMale and female L. uniformis released undetectable ortrace amounts <strong>of</strong> 4-<strong>methyl</strong>-3-<strong>heptanone</strong> when resting (notmolested) in a 2 ml vial. The SPME fiber collected traceamounts <strong>of</strong> 4-<strong>methyl</strong>-3-<strong>heptanone</strong> from resting males(mean ± SE 0.006 ± 0.005 ng per 2 min, N = 6) andresting females (0.004 ± 0.002 ng, N = 6), while within10 s after molestation with the forceps the collection <strong>of</strong>4-<strong>methyl</strong>-3-<strong>heptanone</strong> increased about 350-fold to 1.51 ±0.36 ng for males (N = 4) and 2.27 ± 1.09 ng for females(N = 5) over 2 min (P \ 0.01, t tests, for both sexes).4-Methyl-3-<strong>heptanone</strong> was the only volatile detected byGC–MS. The SPME fiber collected 4.63 ± 1.26 ng4-<strong>methyl</strong>-3-<strong>heptanone</strong> from males and females over 2 minthat were squished briefly in the vial (N = 4). Theseamounts are certainly less than the absolute amountsreleased since SPME only collects a fraction <strong>of</strong> the vaporbut does reflect relative differences in amounts reliably.The ketone was most likely ejected in liquid, but due to itshigh volatility, it would soon vaporize and encounter theSPME fiber. The initial discharge percentage (IDP) is theproportion <strong>of</strong> the insect gland’s defensive volatiles that arereleased in response to an attack by a predator (Byers2006a). The IDP for L. uniformis can be estimated as 41%by comparing the amount collected by SPME fromsquished insects divided by the amount collected frommolested insects. In all cases, individuals <strong>of</strong> either sex thathad their antenna or leg grasped by a fine forceps beat theirwings vigorously, while biting the forceps repeatedly andreleased 4-<strong>methyl</strong>-3-<strong>heptanone</strong> (collected by SPME over2 min). Both sexes <strong>of</strong> L. uniformis have sharp piercingmandibles (see Fig. 1) that could open wounds in adversariesinto which the ketone as venom could be spit.Pogonomyrmex barbatus ants held individually in vials ascontrols released low amounts <strong>of</strong> alarm pheromone(0.11 ± 0.06 ng, N = 36, collected on SPME), althoughsome ants were apparently still alarmed after being taken fromthe colony ([1 ng was collected from 2 <strong>of</strong> 36 ants). It is not possible to determine which species,or if both species, released alarm pheromone exceptwhen only P. barbatus were together (5.63 ± 3.05 ng,N = 4). P. barbatus attacked beet armyworm and cabbagelooper caterpillars by biting and stinging and released alarmpheromone (6.20 ± 2.48, N = 21, P = 0.002; with[0.5 ngcollected from 12 <strong>of</strong> 21 individuals). No ketone was detectedfrom beet armyworm or cabbage looper caterpillars held alonein vials by SPME/GC–MS.Solvent extractions <strong>of</strong> parasitoid wasps and harvesterants and analysis by GC–MSSolvent extraction <strong>of</strong> parasitoids (22 August 2003) showedmale heads (N = 9) contained a mean <strong>of</strong> 3.54 ± 1.21 ng <strong>of</strong>4-<strong>methyl</strong>-3-<strong>heptanone</strong> but none was detected in their123
