ResearchCenter, Conrad, MT.Spr<strong>in</strong>g pea, lentil, and chickpea were grown on no-till chemical fallow at <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Triangle</strong> Ag.Research Center. While spr<strong>in</strong>g pea and lentils were grown on no-till chemical fallow north ofDevon and north of Jopl<strong>in</strong>. Data are summarized <strong>in</strong> Tables 34 thru 40.The 2012 grow<strong>in</strong>g season at WTARC began with temperatures a bit warmer than normal; therewas a less precipitation than the 27 year average, this trend cont<strong>in</strong>ued throughout the grow<strong>in</strong>gseason.Results: <strong>Lentil</strong> data are summarized <strong>in</strong> Tables 34 thru 36. The lentil nursery grown at WTARCyielded between 1120 and 1823 lbs/acre (Table 34). With the small green Essex lentil yield<strong>in</strong>gthe best followed by the medium green CDC Richlea lentil. The lentils grew to an averagemature canopy height of 29 cm (11.4 <strong>in</strong>ches), with an average yield of 1496 lbs/acre.The lentil variety trial north of Devon yielded between 417 and 1254 lbs/acre (Table 35). Themedium green lentil LC01602300R was the highest yielder, followed by the small green lentilEssex. The lentil trial yielded an average of 685 lbs/acre, with a mature canopy height of 28 cm(11.0 <strong>in</strong>ches).North of Jopl<strong>in</strong> the lentil variety nursery yielded between 1479 and 2421 lbs/acre (Table 36).Lead<strong>in</strong>g the yield was the medium green lentil LC016002300R, followed by the large greenlentil Riveland. The average yield north of Jopl<strong>in</strong> was 2077 lbs/acre with an average maturecanopy height of 33 cm (13.0 <strong>in</strong>ches).<strong>Pea</strong> data are summarized <strong>in</strong> Tables 37 thru 39. The pea variety trial grown at WTARC yieldedbetween 2002 and 3251 lbs/acre with an average mature canopy height of 71 cm (28.0 <strong>in</strong>ches).The highest yield<strong>in</strong>g yellow pea was Pro 793 with Pro 083-7406 yield<strong>in</strong>g slightly less. The greenpea with the highest yield was Stirl<strong>in</strong>g with Pro 091-7137 slightly less.North of Devon the pea nursery yielded between 1306 and 2077 lbs/acre (Table 38). The trialmean for pea was 1664 lbs/acre with an average mature canopy height of 60 cm (23.6 <strong>in</strong>ches).Delta, Bridger, and Montech 4152 were the highest yield<strong>in</strong>g yellow pea while Stirl<strong>in</strong>g, Arcadia,and K2 were the best yield<strong>in</strong>g green pea.The pea variety trial north of Jopl<strong>in</strong> yielded between 1202 and 2017 lbs/acre (Table 39). Themean yield was 1570 lbs/acre, with an average mature plant height of 63 cm (24.8 <strong>in</strong>ches). Thetwo highest yield<strong>in</strong>g yellow pea were SW Midas and Montech 4152, with the two highestyield<strong>in</strong>g green pea was Arcadia and Stirl<strong>in</strong>g.


<strong>Chickpea</strong> data are summarized <strong>in</strong> Table 40. The chickpea nursery was grown at WTARC andaveraged between 1311 and 2103 lbs/acre (Table 40). The highest yield<strong>in</strong>g variety was CDCFrontier with CDC Orion yield<strong>in</strong>g the second highest.A similar project will be proposed for FY 2014. The cont<strong>in</strong>uation of on and off-station varietytrials help to elucidate researchers and farmers which varieties are better suited for that particularregion <strong>in</strong> Montana.
