Background InformationFollowing a successful ten year anniversary, Concord Hospital will be holding its 11th Opera Night atRivendell on Saturday 2 November 2013. The event features a night of wonderful opera and classicalmusic, food and wine under the stars within the beautiful grounds of the historic Thomas Walker Estate,Rivendell. Picturesque water views and beautiful music, who can resist? With the theme of “Something Oldand Something New” we bring you a magnificent string orchestra comprising of wonderful musicians fromSydney Symphony and Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestras.Featuring: Soprano Kathryn Zerk, who has been active in UK for many years and is now living inAbbostsford. She had the great privilege of studying with the late Dame Joan Sutherland.The great maestro Richard Bonyage says of Kathryn: …a lovely voice with an extraordinary technique,she has an extension that is very rare today…Kathryn will be singing Mozart’s famous “Queen of the Night” aria among other arias on the night.Tenor Warren Fisher, a principal singer of Opera Australia is a familiar face to the Rivendell Opera stage.As well as solo arias, Warren and Kathryn will sing a heart wrenchingly romantic duet from Donizetti’s“Lucia di Lammermoor”.Frank Celata is one of Australia’s finest clarinettists. When he is not performing as a member of SydneySymphony Orchestra, he is busy making solo appearances regularly on various platforms in Australia.He will perform the slow movement of Mozart’s beautiful Clarinet concerto. There will also be passionateinstrumental music, including Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, and Piazzolla’s Oblivion with SydneySymphony’s oboist Shefali Pryor.Tickets will go on sale soon after the media release, scheduled for September 2013. Concord Hospital islooking to work in partnership with businesses that have an interest in aligning themselves with professional,culturally oriented events which target the local community and beyond, whilst at the same time assist in theraising of much needed funds for the Hospital. All funds raised from the event will go towards the hospital’sConcord Cancer Centre.About the Concord Cancer CentreIn NSW 1 in 2 people will have their lives touched by cancer; however survival rates have increasedsignificantly over the past few decades and are on par with the best in the world.Concord Repatriation General Hospital has been providing cancer services for more than fifty years and isa research leader in a number of cancer-related areas. It has contributed substantially to the establishmentof collaborative networks within the hospital and with other facilities to provide comprehensive health careto patients with cancer. Our services provide the latest care in many areas including breast and endocrinesurgery, urology, upper gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery, medical oncology, haematology anddermatology.

Our model of care is designed to provide a seamless and coordinated experience reducing the stresson our patients and their families associated with frequent medical reviews and chemotherapytreatment. Our Cancer Care coordinators are there to assist and guide patients throughout theirtreatment. To enhance cancer services now and into the future we recently established the ConcordCancer Centre. The main purpose of the Centre is to build on our existing cancer services to ensureour community has access to world class cancer services onsite at Concord. Our key focus is toimprove the patient experience, provide support and education and through our research find betterways to treat cancer.Our Centre has strong links to onsite research facilities and clinical trials enabling medicalbreakthroughs to reach patients faster. In 2013 work will begin on a 20 bed dedicated palliative careunit at Concord Hospital. This will be a purpose built unit designed to meet the needs of patients andfamilies.
