Please see the Program Chair of Nursing for further information.DRUG TESTING AND HEALTH REQUIREMENTSThe <strong>ITT</strong> <strong>Technical</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Breckinridge School of Nursing and Health Sciences is committed toproviding a safe learning environment and fostering the well being and health of its employees andstudents. That commitment is jeopardized when any student uses illegal drugs or other substances, isintoxicated with illegal drugs, other substances or alcohol during any classroom, laboratory or clinicalportion of any program of study offered by <strong>ITT</strong> <strong>Technical</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, or possesses, distributes or usesillegal drugs or alcohol on <strong>ITT</strong> <strong>Technical</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> premises or at any events or activities sponsored ororganized by <strong>ITT</strong> <strong>Technical</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, including, without limitation, any clinical that is part of thestudent’s program of study.Prior to the start of any portion of the clinical at any medical care facility, students may be required toconsent to and pass drug/alcohol testing, physical examination and background check. The student mayalso be required to document that he/she is free from any contagious diseases and/or have beenimmunized against certain illnesses and diseases. The physical examination needs to demonstrate that thestudent is physically fit to perform essential nursing tasks as determined by the medical care facility. Thebackground check(s) may include, but not be limited to, an investigation regarding whether:(a)(b)(c)The student is on any federal list of excluded individuals;The student is registered as a sex offender; andThe criminal history of the student which raises reasonable questions as to the student’sability to provide safe and competent patient care.Questions about the student’s ability to provide safe and competent patient care may arise if the studenthas a criminal background that involved:(i) Abuse, neglect, assault, battery, criminal sexual conduct; and(ii) Any fraud or theft against a vulnerable adult within ten years of the student’s admissionto the program.Prior to the clinical, students in the Nursing program that test positive to the drug screen are not permittedto progress and are immediately dismissed from the program. Readmission after a positive drug test willrequire three negative screens in the preceding year. Retesting will be at the student’s expense. Recordsof drug screening results will be maintained in the student’s permanent file.If an acute medical condition arises while a student is enrolled in the Nursing program, a writtenstatement must also be obtained by the student from their health care provider which states the student’sability to perform the following activities without restriction: moving, lifting and transferring patients.The above requirement also pertains to pregnancy. Students are responsible for their own medical care.Before any student is assigned to any medical care facility for any portion of the clinical, the studentmust:(a) have completed all prerequisites for taking that portion of the clinical;(b) be making satisfactory academic progress in the program;
