National Convention NewsThe AHEPA family from the US, Canada & Greece, convergedon the luxurious Fontainbleau Hotel & Resort in Miami Beachduring the weekend of July 22–27. It was a great conventionwith activities galore to keep us busy and plenty of gorgeousscenery. While we weren’t dancing in the aisles there was still business toconduct. Some of us Ahepa-holics spent our time in the meeting roomsand left our Speedos and string bikinis in the suitcase. Here is some ofwhat made it a memorable and fun-filled week.Activities The variety of activities at this convention wereunprecedented. The Athletics Department organized plenty of sportingevents to keep the youth busy. There were golf, softball and basketballJersey Shore MeetsRecollections of the 89th Supreme Conventiontournaments all week long. If gaming was more your speed, you couldhave tried your luck at the tables during the casino night or the tavlitournament. For couples, there was a ball room dance contest. Of coursethere was Greek dancing every night. However, many people’s favoritewas the “koulouraki” baking contest. There were several lectures thatwere held throughout the course of the week. I attended a lecture onGreece’s involvement in WW II, called “The First Victory” by GeorgeC. Vlytas. It was very enlightening for history buffs, like myself. Otherlectures were on the future of Hellenism and on teaching aids onlearning Greek. There was a performance by Basile, the comedian anda Greek singer plus off-site after hour dinner parties with belly dancingat Taverna OPA.NJ/DE Delegation The NJ/DE AHEPA voting delegation was atabout 15 Ahepans. There were more in attendance but some did notregister in time to vote or could not attend more than a day or two.Serving as Vice Chairman of the convention was our own GeorgeHoriates. He did a fantastic job, which included running most of theconvention. Many committees reported on the convention floor onsome of the fine work that they did. This includes the national projectto build the Hellenic Cultural museum in Chicago, Journey to Greece,AHEPA Academy, AHEPA housing, Cooley’s Anemiaand more. Frank Manios, Chairman of the Bd of Trusteesreported that AHEPA’s finances were the best that they havebeen in years. District 5 was honored with the Publication ofthe Year award for the best news magazine.The convention was well attended by the youth. Sons ofPericles and Maids of Athena delegate strength was higherthan other years. Some of this had to do with the Miamilocation. The Sons reported a tripling of their membershipdue to the membership changes made last year. The NJ Sonsdelegation was about 7 and there was at least several Maidsdelegates that I saw. There was an AHEPA softball (Wyckoff)team and basketball team (Middlesex) representing the 5thdistrict at the convention tournaments.Banquet The banquet had about 600 in attendance.Basile, the comedian was the MC. He did his best to keep usentertained. There were many presentations made. Elections The elections were almost politics free, thanks to an agreementbetween the two political parties made last year to not compete in any ofthe top spots. Most of the top spots were held by AHEPA First candidates.The New Horizons nominated Andy Zachariades (Hudson #108) forSupreme Treasurer, who ran uncontested. The only contests were forSupreme Counselor where our own PDG George Horiates was nominatedbut did not win and for the Board of Trustees where 3 candidates ran for 2spots. Our own Lee Millas (Trenton) was able to win one of those 2 spots,which was for a a 3-year term. Representing Region 3 (NY, NJ, DE) will beJim Kokotas of Brooklyn.For the Daughters of Penelope, our own Demi Thomas (Wyckoff) waselected as Grand Treasurer. This is her second year on the Grand Lodge.There were no major legislative changes passed, the most controversialchange did not make it to the ballot. This dealt with allowing the mostimmediate Past Supreme President of the US and Canada a spot on theMiami BeachBoard of Trustees. Most of the legislative changes dealt with redistricting ofchapters in sparse areas of the country.Congratulations Congratulations should go to outgoing Supreme PresidentNick Karacostas and his Lodge for representing the AHEPA Family so well overthe last two years. Some of his accomplishments include involving the AHEPAfamily in disaster relief, both in the US (tornado) and abroad (earthquake),the first ever outreach for relations with Israel, rebuilding the Hellenic caucus,chartering a new chapter in Istambul Turkey and more.See You Next Year The 2012 Supreme convention will be held SundayJuly 22-Friday July 27 at the Monte Carlo Hotel & Casino Resort in Las Vegas,NV.
