Incollabor<strong>at</strong>ion with several industrialpartners and contributors, the AmericanChemical Society, which is the world'slargest scientific society, makes thescholarships available to students aspart of its ACS Scholars Program.African American,Hispanic/L<strong>at</strong>ino and N<strong>at</strong>ive Americanstudents who are pursuing studies inchemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry,environmental science andrel<strong>at</strong>ed disciplines <strong>at</strong> two- and four-yearcolleges are eligible to receive renewableawards of $2,500 - $3,000. Thesociety expects to award approxim<strong>at</strong>ely$850,000 this academic year to academicallyaccomplished, but underrepresentedminorities.Rel<strong>at</strong>ively few minorities pursuechemistry-rel<strong>at</strong>ed careers, accordingto a report prepared by the society. For more details about applyingfor a scholarship, visitwww.chemistry.org/scholars, or call(800) 227-5558, Ext. 6250.Students learn of incentives through the Higher Educ<strong>at</strong>ion Scholarship Program.By Emma BrownOn Thursday Jan. 15 students in grades 9 – 12 from theBrighton Reserv<strong>at</strong>ion were invited to the Golden Corral restaurantfor a luncheon with Dora Bell, Higher Educ<strong>at</strong>ion Advisor,Tanya Huff, Employment and Training Counselor, and EmmaBrown, Brighton Educ<strong>at</strong>ion Advisor.Bell informed the students about higher educ<strong>at</strong>ionscholarships they can apply for with the Seminole Tribe. Shealso told each child th<strong>at</strong> each tribal citizen is eligible to <strong>at</strong>tendcollege through this program.Bell also explained th<strong>at</strong> tuition and some expenses, suchas books, are fully paid for by the tribe, and each participantreceives a stipend each month to assist them while <strong>at</strong>tendingschool. As with any scholarship, there are rules, such as maintaininga 2.0 grade point average, and staying in contact with theHigher Educ<strong>at</strong>ion staff should the student decide to leave schoolduring a semester. Bell told students she is available to assist studentswith m<strong>at</strong>ters such as college selection, career and degreeBy Donny ArnoldBRIGHTON — Seminole Tribe FireRescue firefighters Mike Hopkins and DonnyArnold took time out of their busy schedule onThursday, Jan. 15, to offer fire prevention andsafety instructions for the youth of theBrighton Reserv<strong>at</strong>ion's After School Program.They taught the children manyaspects of fire prevention and safety such as:Learn not to burn, give m<strong>at</strong>ches and lighters toadults, the importance of smoke detectors inthe home, and “stop, drop and roll.” They alsotaught the children to call 911 if an emergencyoccurs, and told them wh<strong>at</strong> inform<strong>at</strong>ion theyneed to tell the disp<strong>at</strong>cher.The firefighters gave the children firesafety stickers, pencils, fire safety coloringbooks, and their very own junior fire helmet.By Emma BrownBRIGHTON — Bryan Arledge is the son of Arica andShane Buck. He is in the 11th grade <strong>at</strong> Okeechobee High Schooland resides on the Brighton Reserv<strong>at</strong>ion. Some of Bryan’sfavorite activities include football, basketball, and beinginvolved in Student Council <strong>at</strong> school.Arledge would like to <strong>at</strong>tend Florida St<strong>at</strong>e Universityafter he gradu<strong>at</strong>es, and set the pace for a successful career. Hewould like to major in architecture and someday build housesand buildings for the Seminole Tribe.He offered some motiv<strong>at</strong>ing advice for young tribalmembers.“Don’t take the tribe for granted because they might notalways be there,” Arledge said. “Stay in school, and don’t berecognized as the ‘typical Indian’.”It was spoken like someone well on his way to successfulcareer. He said the biggest inspir<strong>at</strong>ional influence in his lifehas been Andrew Bowers, because he has gone beyond highschool, and is working on a successful career.choices, campus visits, etc.Huff shared with the students a little about voc<strong>at</strong>ionalschool and job training. For those students wishing to obtain <strong>at</strong>echnical degree or certific<strong>at</strong>ion in any area, such as culinary art,the Employment and Training Department will assist. This programfunctions a gre<strong>at</strong> deal like Higher Educ<strong>at</strong>ion. Employmentand Training will also assist with job placement for those th<strong>at</strong>would like to begin their work experience early.For those students less than 18 years of age, there arepositions available th<strong>at</strong> will allow you to work up to 20 hoursper week. Each of the students <strong>at</strong>tending the luncheon heard ofmany different options they are privy to being th<strong>at</strong> they are tribalcitizens. Her primarygoal is to <strong>at</strong>tend college to study Indian law or forensic science.Once she has completes her studies, Jade wishes toreturn home and work for the tribe.Braswell’s advice to the younger gener<strong>at</strong>ion is to, “getinvolved and excel in school because it will only hurt you in thefuture if you don’t.”Braswell said the biggest influences in her life are herparents because they have always inspired her to do her best,and to succeed in anything she wants to be.All three of these students are of strong character andremarkably talented.
