Osceola, NaplesLiaison.Ken Fields asked the Council to withdrawone of the items tabled from the Dec. 2003 meeting,and they accepted. Pierce Educ<strong>at</strong>ion Advisor JaneStockton, four high school students, and parent EstherGopher toured the University of Miami (UM).UM Admission Counselor Nikki K. Chuntook the group all around the campus. According toBell, “they showed us all the facilities,” but the groupspent a lot of their time touring UM's better-knowndepartments, including the Business Department,Intern<strong>at</strong>ional Studies Department, Communic<strong>at</strong>ionsDepartment, and Medical Sciences Department.Bell says these departments provide individualizedinstruction because the classes have fewerstudents, which generally helps students learn better.After their tour, they <strong>at</strong>e lunch on campus. While e<strong>at</strong>ing,some current UM students approached Bell andappointments to two key positions, Tribal Secretaryand Tribal Treasurer. Former TribalSecretary/Treasurer Priscilla D. Sayen will now beTribal Secretary and Mike Tiger will be TribalTreasurer. These positions will be effective as of Feb.9.At the Sept. 29, 2003 Council meeting, themembers unanimously approved Resolution C-268-03, which split the Secretary/Treasurer position. Thisdual position was established in 1957, and accordingto the resolution, splitting it will increase efficiency.Board Discusses Mad Cow,Citrus <strong>at</strong> Recent MeetingBy Michael KellyHOLLYWOOD — On Jan. 20, theSeminole Tribe of Florida, Inc. held a Board meeting<strong>at</strong> the main Tribal Office auditorium, discussing thevarious programs and enterprises.Don Robertson, N<strong>at</strong>ural Resources Directorfor the Agricultural/C<strong>at</strong>tle Company, reported th<strong>at</strong>despite the fears of Mad Cow disease, the SeminoleTribe has not been affected.Polly Hayes, 4H Coordin<strong>at</strong>or, plans on settingup sewing, cooking, and other programs with theCulture Department. After all theinform<strong>at</strong>ion is scanned in, Holly brings me the CD-ROM which I then enter into the computer.”With the advent of wireless technology, thetribe can now hold meetings anywhere. Baxleyis involved in the design process, which will includea 750 se<strong>at</strong> amphithe<strong>at</strong>re.Some of the resolutions th<strong>at</strong> passed included:an approval of sponsorship for Five StarChampionship Rodeo and Five Star ChampionshipRodeo for Youth, approval to enter into negoti<strong>at</strong>ionsfor the purchase of a RV park, and approval to enterinto negoti<strong>at</strong>ions for the purchase of Beck’s ServiceSt<strong>at</strong>ion and Convenience Store in Brighton.Tribal Council and Board Meetings Go Wirelessimportantly, it will elimin<strong>at</strong>e mountains of paperworkand perhaps save a small forest.“A gre<strong>at</strong> aspect of using the wireless technologyis th<strong>at</strong> I can bring up any inform<strong>at</strong>ion the represent<strong>at</strong>ivesrequest,” said Silva. “If someone makesreference to a certain resolution, I can simply loc<strong>at</strong>ethe file and send it to each computer.”Priscilla Sayen, Secretary/Treasurer for theSeminole Tribe, enjoys the flexibility of the new systemand th<strong>at</strong> changes can be made quicker than everbefore.“It makes <strong>at</strong>tending these meetings mucheasier,” said President Moses Osceola. “You don'thave to page through loads of paperwork. Presently, two Seminole students<strong>at</strong>tend UM, Summer Tiger, a junior, and MarinaTigertail, a senior. Hollywood Tribal Represent<strong>at</strong>iveMax Osceola Jr. is an alumnus of the school with adegree in political science. Participants included tribalcitizens, employees and affili<strong>at</strong>es.Each entry indic<strong>at</strong>edwhether they were riding for theBoard or Council team. At the end ofthe evening, their points were tabul<strong>at</strong>edand Board triumphed overCouncil.The awards to the participantswere provided by Immokaleeand included both cash and buckles.Councilman Roger Smith ofBrighton also contributed a sponsorship.Board Represent<strong>at</strong>ive PaulBowers of Big Cypress prepared afree barbecue of some of the bestribs anyone has ever e<strong>at</strong>en. The followingboard members also assisted:Johnny Jones of Brighton, DavidDehass of Hollywood and RaymondGarza of Immokalee. After a full day<strong>at</strong> the grill, enough mouth-w<strong>at</strong>eringribs were barbequed for everyone toenjoy second and third helpings.Elaine Aguilar, ImmokaleeCouncil Represent<strong>at</strong>ive, provided a free concessionstand for the entire evening, which included not onlythe food and beverages, but also several homemadedesserts. Immokalee’s Sylvia Marrero don<strong>at</strong>ed frybreadfor the meal as well as her valuable time in theconcession stand.Spencer B<strong>at</strong>tiest won the crowd over<strong>at</strong> his school, but he dreams of winningover an even bigger crowd onthe TV show American JuniorsBy Shelley MarmorHOLLYWOOD — On Thursday Jan.29, Spencer B<strong>at</strong>tiest, 13, performed a gospelsong in front of his fellow students <strong>at</strong>Hollywood Christian School, where he is a seventhgrader.His mother, June B<strong>at</strong>tiest, said Spencerhas been sick for the last month and was on theverge of having Scarlet fever <strong>at</strong> the time of hisperformance. He, however, did not want tomiss his chance to sing.“He is a little trouper,” June B<strong>at</strong>tiestsaid.While his fellow students thunderouslyapplauded for him and gave him hi-fives afterhe finished, Spencer dreams of bigger things.According to June B<strong>at</strong>tiest, Spencer wants to bethe next American Idol.“He’s been wanting to be on AmericanIdol since he was ten,” she said. “But he’salways been too young.”Age, however, may no longer be a factorfor Spencer to become an idol. She saidSpencer recently found out about AmericanJuniors, which is a version of American Idol forA special thank you to all the people whoworked to make this event possible and the gre<strong>at</strong>success th<strong>at</strong> it was. Benny Hernandez of the BigCypress Arena provided not only his time, but alsosheep and c<strong>at</strong>tle.
