2011 loreto art exhibitionFeature Artist Will Nolan Untitled #12011 Loreto Art Exhibition9–11 September

Feature ArtistWill NolanSALifeEmerging ArtistAwardDebraMorleyFeature ArtistSALife Emerging Artist AwardThis year’s SpringART is very excited tohave the artist Will Nolan and his urbanlandscape photography for our featureworks. Photography is an excitingmedium, which is developing as animportant art form for the Twenty FirstCentury. Will is a young and talentedphotographer who has received muchattention early in his art career. Will originally studied drafting butdecided that he wanted a morecreative focus to his study andreturned to art school to study painting. While studying photography as part ofhis course, he became fascinated bythe dark room process of Photogram’s(a non camera technique). The handson process appealed to him. After completing a Bachelor of VisualArt at the University of South Australiain 2008, specialising in photography,Will released his TRACE ELEMENTSa series of photographs, which wereexhibited at Gallery 139. This serieswas met with critical acclaim.SpringART is delighted to exhibit Will’scurrent series, “WHAT LIES WITHIN”.This series of work developed thoughthe exploration of the photographiclandscape whereby shadows becomeabstract forms, changing the viewer’s2perception of the landscape. Will’sinventive images draw the viewer’seye to a new and exciting way ofconsidering the urban environmentas it is captured by photography. Thisbody of work presents the graphicbeauty of the everyday, illustrating andrecording facets of urban life. Our feature piece, “UNTITLED #1”, isdeliberately anonymous, unnamed,as Will doesn’t want the viewer to begiven any suggestions of a particularplace. In this work he is exploring therelationship between positive andnegative spaces, black and whitecompositions and 3D shapes in thearchitectural landscape. The darkvoid of the building is there for theviewer to contemplate and imaginewhat forms it may contain. The void isintended to resonate with each viewerand be interpreted in a personal way. Will teaches within the photographydepartment at The Adelaide Collegeof the Arts where he enjoys inspiringstudents with his passion. We are veryfortunate to have Will Nolan participatein SpringART 2011. No doubt we willall be inspired by the artistry of Will’sphotography. Will exhibits courtesy of Helen GoryGalerie-MelbourneThe SALife Emerging Artist Awardhas been won by Debra Morley. Art’sEditor, Lance Campbell commentedthat reviewing the short list applicantswasn’t easy but felt Debra’s workdisplayed a greater level of curiosity.Debra recently graduated fromAdelaide Central School ofArt with Honours (BVA 2010)and is continuing to explorethe transformative qualities of timeand gravity on the human form inthese three dimensional figures. Sheutilises layering and found materialsallowing the material to create itsown aesthetic. SALife editor JacquiWilliams handed Debra a chequefor $1000 at a special SALA eventheld in August hosted by The LionHotel. Debra will be supported andfeatured both by SALife Magazineand at this SpringART exhibition.

LoretoArtDepartmentJewellerJamesThredgoldStar PortraitTraceyWhitingTrace Elements Will NolanLoreto Art DepartmentPhotography is the chosen mediumfor Will Nolan, the Spring Art featureartist for 2011. As viewers of art inan image saturated world we have afacility to engage with photographyin its various forms. What makes aphotograph an artwork is a commonquestion with which students andviewers of art grapple. If anyone cantake a photograph, is it simply a matterof being in the right place at the righttime to capture the moment? Whatis it that distinguishes a photographas an artwork? Unlike painting wherebrushes and paint are the tools usedto carry the painter’s vision onto thecanvas, a mechanical devise, thecamera stands between the artistphotographer and their subject.Photographers, like painters balancethe technical considerations of theirchosen medium to communicatetheir vision. Significant artworkscommunicate an artist’s vision andhave the power to touch us emotionallyin very particular ways. The famousAmerican photographer, Ansell Adamssaid, “There are always two people inevery picture: the photographer andthe viewer.”Jacky HamiltonLearning Area Coordinator Visual ArtsYears 6–12JewellerJames Thredgold has once againdesigned a unique piece of jewelleryfor SpringART. This one-off piece isour raffle prize. As always, it is simplybeautiful and we expect raffle ticketswill be highly sought after. In describing the creative process,James said that “This year’sphotographic feature piece byWill Nolan was one of our biggestchallenges from SpringART. The imageis architectural and limited in shapeand colour. We started our design bydrawing from the colour of the brickwall and used the tourmaline in themain stone, which glows purple/red.The linear white gold on the sidesand bail portray the mortar, which isas essential as this holds the wholestructure together. The black usedin the neoprene is the shadow castfrom above and the diamonds weren’tnecessary, I just love them!”Star PortraitStar Portrait is now in its fifthsuccessful year in 2011. Following theformula of the popular Rolf Harris ABCseries of the same name, each yeara prominent South Australian sits forour three talented artists. Each artistprepares a portrait of the sitter, to beunveiled at our Star Portrait event. WelcomeIt is with much pleasure that I welcome you to the 2011 LoretoSpring Art Exhibition.Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the sametime; it can evoke a kaleidoscope of emotions — fun, peace, freedom, tension, justice, fear, love — depending on how theviewer interprets the colours, images and symbols used. Artaffords us the opportunities for self-expression where the artistcan communicate an interpretation or vision of aspects of hisor her world. At Loreto, creativity is encouraged in our students and thecollection in this year’s Spring Art Exhibition links well with thefocus this year on ‘felicity’ in all Loreto schools in Australia. This notion of ‘felicity’ is nourished by fun and celebration, bybeauty and creativity, by sensitivity to the natural environmentand by opportunities for self-expression and for reflection — allof which are present here in our Spring Art collection.“A good painting to me has always been like a friend. It keepsme company, comforts and inspires me.” Hedy LamarrMy hope is that you, too, may find “a friend” in this year’s artcollection, which will give you many years of pleasure andinspiration.Rosalie GleesonPrincipal4
