newsIssue 2 Friday 26 February 2010From the PrincipalDear Parents and StudentsIn Lent we are called to reflection,to sacrifice and to gratitude. Letus be people of grateful hearts,as is our calling in the Ignatiantradition. From Thomas Merton’sthoughts on solitude:“To be grateful is torecognise the love of Godin everything he has given us.And he has given us everything.Every breath we draw is a giftof his love. We live life inthe moment. We are open to theabundance of God in the ordinaryand the extraordinary, around usand within us.When we contemplate therichness of our life we come to adeep appreciation of all that wehave been given. Congratulations and well done girls!Kellie MartinSenior School SportsFrom the Middle YearsA new year is often a time of great optimism and excitement. It is a time of newbeginnings; new attitudes, subject areas, friends and challenges. As I enter mysecond year at Loreto, and I am not juggling an odd and even week timetableand a map to assist me to find the room I am teaching in, I have been able to seetwo characteristics of Loreto students that crystallise the start of this year. Loretostudents are happy students. The number of happy and smiling faces gatheringin friendship groups to relay holiday adventures and happenings has echoedloudly near lockers and in grassy, shaded places where the students sit and chatat recess and lunch. Of equal note is their willingness to welcome new studentsinto their Homeroom and to welcome the start of what will be a year of academicrigour and personal challenges. It has been a welcoming and happy start to 2010.We welcome new students and their families and new staff members who jointhe Middle Years Teaching Team. We hope that you feel warmly welcomed intoour community and that your experiences are enjoyable and rewarding.TransitionOver the past few weeks many students have faced new challenges. During thistime Pastoral Care Teachers have been assisting students in their Homerooms toadjust to changes. This year, Pastoral Care Teachers have made a ‘contact’ phonecall home to all Years 6 and Year 7 parents and to new Years 8 and Year 9 parents. The phone calls have assisted in developing an open line of communicationbetween yourself and your daughter’s Pastoral Care Teacher. One of the mostimportant factors in ensuring the best possible care for your daughter is thatthe communication channels between home and school are strong. If you haveany concerns or wish to discuss how your child is settling in over these first fewweeks, please feel free to contact the Homeroom Pastoral Care Teacher in thefirst instance. Additionally, you may wish to contact the Year Level Coordinator ormyself. It was terrific to see so many parents attend the Parent Information Evenings.Hopefully, you found the content of the evening beneficial and you enjoyed theopportunity to meet your daughter’s Pastoral Care Teacher. Feel free to email meany feedback you may have so that we can continue to improve the format andcontent of the evenings in the future.Student LeadershipIn 2010, the process for SRC leadership positions was slightly different than ithas been in the past. This year students could self nominate in the applicationprocess. That means that candidates entered the nomination processbecause they were self-motivated and chose to apply for the SRC positions. In Homerooms, the quality of the students’ nomination speeches was veryimpressive. Many teachers commented on how difficult it was for students tovote for only one representative. Students spoke of the importance of speakingup for the truth. They spoke about the leader’s role to serve others and skills suchas being organised and being a good communicator. Applicants saw the positionas one that is not always easy and that there are times when your personal viewmay be different than the groups.Year 8 SRC elections will be held after the students return from their camp andwe will present them with their badges at a later assembly.Thank you to all of the students who presented nomination speeches. Thestandard of the speeches was very high and all students are encouraged to takeup opportunities to be leaders as they arise.SRC Representatives Semester OneYear 6Year 76B Veronica Iadarola, 6G Emma Kiley, 6W Lilli Heard7B Alice Lange, 7G Isabelle Zerella, 7W Phoebe ChristofiLoreto College News - 2felicity justice sincerity freedom verityYear 99B Taneesha Jordan, 9G Molly Kernahan, 9W Sarah Roberts9R Meg Cramond
