schools program
AN Olympic silver medallist and a future
Olympian launched the start of the 2001
Powerade Schools Program at Riverside
Primary School.
Champion rower Darren Balmforth
was on hand to show his silver medal
from the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
He was supported by yachtsman Mark
Padgett, who brought along his yacht for
the eager students to see. Both athletes
are aiming to be selected in their chosen
sports for the 2004 Games in Athens.
The program, run by the Tasmanian
Institute of Sport and sponsored by
Powerade (Coca-Cola Amatil), sees athletes
under scholarship at the TIS speak
to school students around the state
about their sporting experiences.
Maree Fish, the co-ordinator of the
program at the TIS, said: “It is proving to
be a very valuable program for both ath-
letes and students. Athletes get the
chance to improve their speaking and
presenting skills, while students are
exposed to an elite athlete and what that
entails.
“In many cases, students are returning
to the primary schools that they attended,
which is very special.”
The program also aims to promote the
value of an active and healthy lifestyle,
encourage student participation in sport
and recreation, and promote the importance
of participating without emphasis
on winning. It also aims to encourage students
to set goals and strive to achieve
their best.
“Without the support of corporate
sponsors such as Coca-Cola Amatil, we
wouldn’t be able to provide the types of
programs that we currently run, and we
thank them most sincerely,” Maree said.
Coaches hold key to
success of programs
ONE of the most critical components of
any institute program is the coach.
Without their expertise and leadership,
our athletes and programs would not
continue to enjoy the success they do.
The TIS is committed to the ongoing
development and support of our highperformance
coaches, just as we are
equally aware of the need to support
other Tasmanian coaches who aspire to
national roles.
The development of these coaches is
critical to the continued success of our
athletes and programs and it is important
the TIS be able to assist in the development
of their skills and experience.
In recognition of the need for coaching
development in this state – and through
additional financial support from the
State Government – the TIS Board of
Management has recently awarded six
coaching scholarships* to aspiring elite
coaches.
The scholarships provide financial and
mentoring support to the chosen coaches,
allowing them to gain valuable national
and international experience while augmenting
their knowledge and skills
through hands-on coaching and education
opportunities.
These coaches come from a variety of
sports, are based in different parts of the
state and can all recount very different
coaching experiences.
However, they all share the common
aspiration of coaching at the international
level and have already spent much of
their own time and financial resources
upgrading their own skills and knowledge.
Director’s
REPORT
Through their TIS coaching scholarships
they will not only be able to improve
upon their current levels of expertise, but
will also be able to contribute to their own
athletes’ performances and to the education
of their fellow coaches as they share
the knowledge they gain.
Elizabeth Franks
DIRECTOR
* The six coaches selected under this
new program will be announced at a special
media event in July and we’ll have
photos and full details in our next TIS
Bulletin.
Clare runs back into top form
CLARE Hawthorne has gained selection
in the Australian team for the world orienteering
championships in Finland during
July.
Clare earned national selection as a
junior 10 years ago and has returned to
the sport after a break to complete further
study. Fellow TIS scholarship holder
Danielle Winslow is continuing training
as reserve for this year’s team.
Boxer Daniel Geale has had a busy
10 weeks. He has represented Australia
in Korea, at the East Asian Games in
Japan, the World Championships in
Ireland and returned home with a gold
medal from the Acropolis Cup in Athens.
Daniel has a week in Tasmania before
championships. It is pleasing for Marcus
to follow the footsteps of his friend and
mentor and make a successful transition
from junior to senior ranks.
And Evandale basketballer Hollie
Grima has been selected in the
Australian Gems (under-19) team for the
world junior championships in the Czech
Republic. Hollie’s selection is reward for
the past 18 months of intensive training,
following her move to the AIS in Canberra
at the tender age of 16.
ROWING
THE Tasmanian Institute of Sport Rowing
Program is celebrating perhaps its greatest
national championships, with scholarship
and Target Squad rowers bringing
home a record number of medals.
A highlight was the lightweight men’s
four winning their third successive Penrith
Cup, with Simon Burgess and Darren
Balmforth coming out of light training following
their hectic Olympic campaign to
join fellow scholarship holders Shane
Broad and Andrew Butler in a meritorious
win.
Dana Faletic rowed magnificently to
win the senior women’s single scull, our
first heavyweight women’s title.
Kerry Hore was unable to build on her
fine heat win, succumbing to injury after
firming as favourite for the senior B title.
In all, our rowers represented 3.68 per
cent of the 2,392 rowers entered at the
nationals and won 15.64 per cent of the
medals available and 18.52 per cent of
the gold medals – a truly wonderful effort.
This culminated in Deon Birtwistle
being selected to represent Australia in
the East Asian Games held in Osaka,
Japan. Deon and teammate Josh Frichot,
of Ballarat, won gold in the men’s lightweight
double scull, defeating Sydney
Olympic finalists, Japan.
Selected in the Australian senior team
were scholarship holders Brendan Long,
Dana Faletic, Andrew Butler, Shane
Broad and Sam Beltz. John Driessen, a
TIS coach, was named as coach of the
men’s lightweight four.
Named in the Australian junior team
were outstanding junior sculler and scholarship
holder Scott Brennan and his
coach, head TIS coach Sam Le Compte.
Also selected for the junior team were
Hugh Edwards, Cameron Wurf, Sam
Waley and Kaspar Hebblewhite all members
of the institute’s rowing program.
Selected as coach of this crew was
Darren Balmforth, setting a wonderful
example of an Olympic athlete putting
time back into juniors in his chosen sport.
To have 11 rowers and three coaches
chosen to represent Australia overseas is
a testament to the success of the rowing
program at the TIS and head coach Sam
Le Compte.
HOCKEY
MATTHEW Wells, Daniel Sproule and
Zain Wright have been selected to represent
Australia in the Sultan Aslan Shah
Cup to be held in August in Kuala
Lumpur.
This is the first time in many years that
the TIS has been so heavily represented
in a national senior team.
Matthew and Zain were also members
of the East Asian Games team that won
gold in the Osaka tournament in June,
with Matthew captaining the team for the
first time.
Daniel would most likely have been
included in the EAG team, but he had
more pressing home duties, welcoming
the birth of his first child, Livinnia Sproule.
The Manning Cup was the tournament
in which Zain Wright recently made his
international debut, playing in all three
games against New Zealand.
Zain has reached another milestone
by scoring his first international goal
against Korea in the final of the EAG tournament.
Daniel, Matthew and Zain’s great form
assisted the Tassie Tigers making the
NHL semi-finals for the first time since
1973.
Three in JWC squad
DAVID Guest, Cam Bennett and Phil
Marshall were all recently included in the
27-man squad selected for the Junior
World Cup after the conclusion of the
under-21 tournament held in Hobart during
April.
David is now in Perth with the AIS and
was joined by Phil to play in two matches
Zain Wright makes his international debut for Australia
against the Indian senior team. The AIS
group won the first game 4-1 and lost the
second match 1-2. Both David and Phil
were strong performers in the games
played.
A camp will be held in early July with
an 18-member team being selected to
compete in Kuala Lumpur in a five-nation
competition in August. In September the
18-man team for the Junior World Cup
will be announced.
Hard work begins in
earnest for elite eight
THE cricket season is officially over for
2001/2002 but the hard work is just
beginning for eight young Tasmanians
named in the 2001/2002 TIS Elite
Development Squad (EDS).
There are four newcomers in the
squad: Ben Hilfenhaus, Tim Paine,
Travis Little and Luke Butterworth.
They join existing scholarship holders:
Brett Geeves, Xavier Doherty, George
Bailey and Kade Munday.
The EDS program is run by the TIS
in close association with the
Tasmanian Cricket Association’s state
manager of coaching and development,
Tim Coyle.
The squad will spend the winter
CRICKET
months under intensive training and
testing. Special emphasis will this year
be placed on technique with a view to
increasing performance and reducing
injury.
TIS biomechanics expert Dan
Billing conducted the first testing at the
NTCA indoor nets in April, filming the
squad members and then analysing
the results.
Tim Coyle said the young cricketers
were getting a great head start from
being a part of the TIS squad and
being able to use the full resources of
the TIS.
will compete in Adelaide in late June with
Bernie Colrain, Lottie White, Nicole
Geeves, Julia Reid and Jackie Jones, all
from the TIS, taking the opportunity to
impress national selectors who will be
attending the tournament.
Organising
‘think tank’
no easy task
IT isn’t an easy task to get all of
the TIS team together in one spot
at one time, but once a year at
least, the task is attempted in an
effort to forward plan.
The “think tank” was held at
Silver Ridge Retreat at the foot of
Mount Roland near Sheffield in
the state’s north-west.
It was a worthwhile two days
with a clear strategy and plan of
attack formulated from the exercise.
Southern Cross News on Sunday
night, June 24, would have seen
the TIS feature as part of the
This is part of a plan to lift the
community.
Fun run success
WELL done to the organisers of
the Bass & Equitable Fun Run
held in Launceston on Sunday,
June 24. Launceston has been
without a fun run for some years
now, and thanks to the support of
Bass & Equitable (one of the TIS’s
new sponsors as well) it has been
resurrected.
And a big ‘well done’ to TIS
scholarship holders Angela
Tolson (judo), Travis Little (cricket),
Wesley Young (rowing), and
Ben Maynard (canoeing), for their
fine performance, to see the TIS
win the sporting teams’ section of
the fun run.
It was, as its name suggests, a
fun day, despite atrocious weather
conditions, and it was to aid a
worthwhile cause – youth suicide.
Our Project Support Officer
Denise Hansson and her daughter
Megan also took to the streets for
the run, and TIS Director Liz
Franks took part in the 2km walk
with daughters Stephanie and
Katherine, along with Bass &
Equitable CEO, Russell Paterson,
and wife Margaret.
Well done to all, especially
Hectic few months
for ACE program
WHAT a hectic few months it has been for
the ACE program.
Mid-April saw the launch of the 2001
Powerade Schools Program. Olympic silver
medallist Darren Balmforth and
national sailing representative Mark
Padgett thrilled a group of grade 5/6 students
at Riverside Primary School with
stories about their sporting experiences.
All students were able to have a close
look at Darren’s Olympic silver medal and
a few lucky students found themselves sitting
in Mark’s boat ready for a gust of wind!
It was a fantastic afternoon and special
thanks go to Coca-Cola Amatil and
its state market manager, Steve
Fordham, for the ongoing support of this
popular program.
Likewise, a special thanks to TIS athletes
who have volunteered to be a part of
this program and who so eagerly share
their story with many eager school children
throughout Tasmania.
Since launching the 2001 Powerade
schools program in April, 20 schools have
hosted a visit by a TIS athlete with six
more schools to be involved in the program
during Term 2.
Athlete visits have again been widespread
throughout Tasmania with tenpin
bowler Matt Riley thrilling students and
teachers at his old Burnie primary school,
Stella Maris, and cyclists Belinda Goss
and Louise Yaxley finding their way to
Wilmot Primary School and Rosebery
In the south of the state, rowing, water
polo, judo, hockey, swimming, track and
field, table tennis, cycling and mountain
bike are all featured in the program.
In conjunction with the 2001
Powerade Schools Program athletes
attended workshops facilitated by
experts from Rostrum Tasmania who
have assisted in preparing several nervous
and inexperienced public speakers
before facing their first group of students.
Athletes in the AFL Elite Development
Squad participated in a specialist leadership
workshop facilitated by Bob Owens,
of Team Discovery. Bob is also the
Tasmanian representative for career planning
specialist DBM Australia.
New to the TIS, athletes in the Tennis
Elite Development Squad participated in
a goal-setting workshop and a general
ACE induction session. Athlete Career
and Education induction sessions were
also conducted with athletes in the AFL
and Cricket Elite Development Squads,
and National Training Centre hockey and
High-tech
unit takes
testing
into field
TASMANIA’S sporting community is set
to benefit from the launch of the
Tasmanian Institute of Sport’s new hightech
mobile testing unit.
In effect, the unit, sponsored by health
fund MBF, is a mobile laboratory that will
allow the TIS to test athletes in their training
and competition environments.
“This is the most significant development
at the TIS in recent years and
reflects the importance of the work that
our Sports Performance Unit is doing
with elite athletes, coaches and the general
sporting community,” TIS Director
Elizabeth Franks said.
“Science is playing an increasingly
important role in sport by giving athletes
and coaches vital information to assist in
training prescription and improving performances.
This unit takes us to the athletes
rather than the athletes always having
to come to us.”
Tammie Ebert, the new mobile unit, putting TIS rower Deon Birthwhistle through his
paces at the official launch
The unit represents an investment of
around $100,000 and is equipped with
high-tech equipment including a laptop
computer and specialised software supplied
by Dell for recording results and biomechanical
analysis.
“We are very appreciative of the support
of MBF, in particular from MBF general
manager for Victoria and Tasmania,
Peter Hudson, and to Dell Computer in
supporting this important initiative,” Ms
14-medal haul at nationals
THE TIS had its most successful senior
national track championships in
Melbourne this year and leading the
charge were Mark Jamieson and Belinda
Goss in the under-19 divisions.
Both riders won the individual pursuit
in their respective divisions, booking a
place on the national team to travel to
Trexlertown, Pennsylvania in the USA for
the Junior World Track Championships.
The Tasmanian team won 14 medals
including gold by Jamieson, Emily
Williams and Goss (2), silver by
Rossendell, Bernard Sulzberger, Emily
Williams, and the junior teams pursuit
team, and bronze by Yaxley, Goss (3) and
Darren Young (2).
Young earned a spot on the senior
national team to the World Cup in
Columbia with his performance in the
Search for talent
well under way
THE search for the 2001/2002 Talent Search intake is well
under way. During May, Phase 2 testing was conducted
in the three regions across the state (North, North-West
and South) with a total of 183 students attending.
There was some outstanding talent and we have
invited those most suited to the sports of rowing, athletics
and cycling to attend information sessions.
The sessions for rowing and athletics took place on
Wednesday 20 June in the South, Thursday 21 June in
the North-West and Monday 25 June in the North.
Cycling information sessions will take place in August.
On completion of these sessions successful
athletes will be aligned with
coaches and begin an exciting and
challenging year in the program.
Meanwhile, an Athletics Talent
Search Development Squad/Oz
Squad Workshop was conducted at
the Tasmanian Institute of Sport on
Wednesday 13 June for current
Talent Search athletes. The content
and timing of the workshop was
designed to assist athletes as they begin their preparation
for the upcoming track and field season.
Peter Culhane, the new TIS Physical Preparation
Coach, conducted an interactive presentation on core
stability; Keith Price (drug control officer) spoke about
the Australian Sports Drug Agency (ASDA) drug testing
procedures; and Di Barnes (Athletics Tasmania
Development Coach) challenged the athletes to look
closely at their diets and specific nutritional needs.
The 2000/2001 Talent Search Development Squad
is nearing the completion of its 12-month commitment.
Athletes continue to record outstanding results and the
TIS wishes the athletes all the best in their continued
development.
Community Forums
to boost TIS profile
ONE of Tasmania’s major building
sponsor a series of community
forums as part of an initiative by
the Tasmanian Institute of Sport.
Bass & Equitable Community
Forums, will be held around the
state in regional and rural Tasmania
during the next 12 months.
TIS Director Elizabeth Franks
says it is part of a strategy to both
increase the profile of the TIS and
better educate the general community
on the benefits of elite
sport.
“The TIS and the services it
elite sport but not so well known in
organisation and hold the forum in
their rooms or facility.
The focus will be on general
sport – providing information on
areas such as preparation for competition,
nutrition, sport psychology,
