We a re pleased to provide this annual report on the activities of Centra l 

Maine Healthcare ’s Office of Development and Community Affairs. 

The last fiscal year again demonstrated the strong and mutually beneficial relationship that exists between 

C e n t ral Maine Medical Center and its many constituents. For more than a century, the people of the gre a t e r 

Lewiston-Auburn region have generously supported the hospital’s healthcare mission. In return, CMMC has pledged 

to provide the best healthcare services possible for the people in our re g i o n . 

Those who are familiar with our annual tradition of offering thanks to the many people who provide fin a n c i a l 

support for our work will note a change in the format of this year’s missive. Instead of including the Annual Honor 

Roll of Donors with the Central Maine Healthcare Annual Report, we have developed it as a separate publication for 

d i rect mailing to those who have assisted us by making financial contributions during the past year. 

We would be remiss if we failed to note in these introductory remarks a significant change impacting Centra l 

Maine Healthcare ’s Development Office during the past year. After some five years at the helm of the org a n i z a t i o n ’s 

f u n d - raising and community affairs pro g ram, Gerald R. Martel re t i red at the end of the fiscal year. Gerry pro v i d e d 

s t e a d y, thoughtful direction in an era of ever-increasing financial and business pre s s u re s. 

We would like to take this opportunity to recognize the Central Maine Healthcare - C e n t ral Maine Medical Center 

A s s o c i a t e s, a group of volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to our mission. They work throughout the year 

on various fund-ra i s e rs and, most importantly, as community advocates. 

We offer our heartfelt thanks to the many people who have supported CMH-CMMC by giving their fin a n c i a l 

support to our organization. Because of space limitations, we are able to acknowledge in this Honor Roll only those 

donations of $25 or more. Donations of less than $25 are equally appreciated; such gifts, when aggregated, amount 

to significant amounts that care applied to support CMMC’s healthcare mission.

E n d owments. The gift that keeps giving 

C e n t ral Maine Medical Center’s history is one of continuous gro w t h 

and expansion. For over a century, the hospital has constructed 

b u i l d i n g , sadded 

services, recruited new physicians to our community 

and provided quality health care services to an ever growing segment 

of our population. 

All of this growth and all of these changes have been made possible

to perpetuate their giving through an endowment. 

What is an endowment? Broadly defined, an endowment may be 

c o n s i d e red an institution’s permanent funds, the earnings fro m 

which are used to provide ongoing financial support. A stro n g

discretion of the Central Maine Healthcare Board of Dire c t o rs.

C e n t ral Maine Medical Center. It is a means to continue their annual

Bequest donors demonstrate a foresight and special caring for the ideals 

and quality of care found at Central Maine Medical Center. Bequests 

offer opportunities for perpetual memorials, for the creation or impro v ement 

of vital pro g ra m s, and for endowed funds to help assure the continued 

excellence at our medical center. Bequests also offer a means for 

annual fund donors to perpetuate their level of giving after they are 

deceased. Central Maine Healthcare is deeply indebted to the above individuals 

for remembering the medical center in their wills and to their 

families for supporting their decision. 

Bequest Society 

The Bequest Society is intended to formally recognize those special 

individuals who have demonstrated the vision to remember Centra l 

Maine Medical Center in their will. Bequest Society members will: 

• have their name included on a Bequest Society Honor Roll, placed in 

a prominent location at CMMC; 

• be named as a Bequest Society member in the Annual Report of 

C e n t ral Maine Healthcare ; 

• be invited to a luncheon for Bequest Society members and their 

g u e s t s, which will include a special pro g ram about some aspect of 

C M M C ’s health care services and an opportunity to meet members 

of the medical center’s administra t i o n ; 

• receive a Bequest Society membership certificate suitable for fra mi 

n g ; 

• have their name permanently engraved on a plaque on CMMC’s 

Honor Wall of Donors, at the time the bequest is completed. 

The following are recognized as members of the Bequest Society. To 

them, and to others who prefer to remain anonymous, we owe a debt

CMMC Fall Golf Classic 

The Seventh Annual CMMC Fall Golf Classic was once again held at the 

historic Poland Spring Country Club in Poland Spring on September 15, 

1999. A full compliment of players enjoyed a competitive game of golf 

on a picturesque course. CMMC Associate volunteers provided warm 

hospitality and fellowship throughout the day. The tournament is org anized 

and run by the Associates Golf Tournament Committee. The continuing

The CMH Development Office and the Wo m a n ’s Hospital Association 

combined their efforts to create the festive Mardi Gras Gala held on 

M a rch 25, 2000 at the Ko ra Temple in Lewiston. It was an exciting 

evening of New Orleans style food, song and dance that everyone 

enjoyed. It was a colorful, fun-filled party to remember! The event 

raised over $10,000 to benefit the Arbor House. This facility, located

keeps on giving! The 2000 Gre e n s C a rd enabled CMH to raise more than 

$25,000 to benefit the Cancer Care Immediate Needs Fund. This fund 

was created to help our cancer patients with costs that are not covere d 

by their insura n c e .
