Troizi: Farmer experiencesVariety mattersWith his 10,000 litre Bidlea pedigreeHolstein milking herd on a high maizediet and a new anaerobic digester toprovide feedstock for, Ray Brownrelies heavily on his maize cropsperforming in the field.Once a believer that crop outputwas primarily a function of seedbedand fertiliser, he’s now converted tothe belief that variety choice is also a key factor, having seen Troizi side-by-side with anotherfavoured option this year.“We ran out of Troizi when drilling and used another highly rated variety to finish a particularfield,” explains Ray, who runs his 280-strong milking herd from The Orchards, near HolmesChapel. “I thought nothing of it at the time, but by mid-August there was a distinct line acrossthe field, with the Troizi growing 18 inches taller and considerably thicker and greener. I wouldestimate the dry matter potential to be 20% higher in the Troizi at this stage.“We have 30 acres of Troizi altogether this year, and it is performing after grass as well asfollowing maize, and did particularly well out-competing weeds early on when other varietieswere struggling.”More maize fuelsherd expansionExpanding a dairy herd means makingmore provision for fodder, and henceStuart Symm has put his trust in aforage maize variety with a trackrecord for consistently delivering highyields.“We took the advice of ouragronomist Dave Harris and opted fora new variety that would deliver highyields of quality forage maize,” heexplains. “We’ve drilled around 48 acresof Troizi and, with the way the cropsare looking – with well-formed cobs in mid-August - we anticipate around 1,000 tonnes comethe first week of October.”Herd size at Rookery Farm, near Tarporley is moving up towards 180 cows, and maize – fed asabout 50% of the forage ration alongside grass – is an important part of the plan.“It pays us to keep our milk proteins up, such is our milk contract, so we look to buffer feedforage for as long as we can,” adds Stuart. “Having plenty of maize means we can feed thisthrough the summer.”Troizi: High yielding performance in the fieldGrown over more than 4,000 acres in the UK in 2011, Troizi has performed consistently, delivering high yields of quality forage within a safe harvest window when many othervarieties have succumbed.Vigorous establishmentIn a year when many crops in parts of theUK were tested due to heavy weedinfestations during the establishmentphase, the vigorous early growth of Troiziwas particularly beneficial. As a varietywith a rapid early growth characteristic,Troizi has the ability to crowd out weedseven when spraying is less effective dueto heavy rainfall or poor timeliness.Strong rootingEarly vigour ensures strong and rapid rootdevelopment, ensuring the crop searchesout water and nutrients efficiently andremains upright and resistant to lodging.Optimum cob positionA relatively low cob position for Troizi isfavourable, keeping the centre of gravitycloser to the ground and aiding in thecrop’s resistance to lodging.

Growing maize for starchin mainstream areasProfileHigh yielding forage variety that consistently delivers in typical UK conditions. Achieves a maturecrop of high quality forage maize within a safe period, in all the main maize growing areas of the UK.Features strongly in the latest NIAB Descriptive List with a dry matter yield of 105%. Highest qualityseed for uniform drilling. Cold tested for reliable germination. The benefits of a reliable higher yieldThe increased dry matter yields achieved by Troizi CS allow a number of advantages over loweryielding comparable varieties including:• Greater yields of maize from a similar acreage allowing lower cost per tonne and reducedbought-in feed costs.• Similar maize tonnage from fewer acres, allowing increased returns from summer grazingand/or opportunities for alternative high protein silage crops.• Similar maize tonnage from fewer acres, releasing land for activities such as out-wintering onbrassica crops to reduce housing and bought-in feed costs.Varieties comparisonVariety DM Yield DM DM Yield ME Yield Standing(% control) (%) (t/acre) (1,000 MJ/ha) powerTroizi CS 105 35.2 19.6 221 [8.3]Kaspian 91 41.5 17.0 199 7.9Ixxes 100 36.0 18.6 212 8.3NK Cheer 101 35.3 18.8 213 -Bonapart 101 35.0 18.8 212 8.2Artist 97 37.9 18.2 210 8.2Source: NIAB Descriptive List for 2012 early forage maize varieties (favourable).Your local Troizi CS distributor:Follow us on:@AberForageAvonmouth: 0117 982 3691 • Lincoln: 01522 868714www.britishseedhouses.com
