Beware of false prophetsJudge not that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged ;and with what measure ye mete,it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thybrother's eye, but considerest not the beamthat is in thin own eye ?Beware of false prophets, which come to youin sheep's clothing, but inwardlythey are raving wolves. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven;but he that doeth the will of my Fatherwhich is in heaven. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock.-St. Matthew (7:1,2,3,15,21,24)

They advise to be still, physically and mentally, in meditationand in that stillness one becomes aware of self by rising above bodyconsciousnesswhich preceds God-knowledge. When a Master,Word-made-flesh, is found, you come nearer the Word-God-intoexpressionPower, Who is manifested in him.To celebrate the birthday, people at large make extra efforts tocleanse their homes of all filth, white-wash and paint them and lightsare lit. Lighting of houses is a common feature both in the Eastand the West. In this, the Masters have a message for the spiritualbenefit of humanity. You are the living temples of God in which the Light of Godis effulgent to enable you to contact Him. This Light and Soundprinciple is reverberating in the temple of your body. You are tocleanse the body by keeping strict vegetarian diet, avoiding all intoxicantsand by right conduct of good living. The various human elementswhich distract the spirit from Godway are : lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego which are washed away by coming in contactwith the Light and Sound principle by the grace of the Master. Iwould reiterate the wise counsel of Jesus Christ : 'Take heed threfore, that the light which is in thee be not darkness'.I wish you all to live such a disciplined and regulated life whichmay prove as a beacon light for others. It will not only accelerateyour spiritual progress but will earn rich dividends for you by guidingthe footsteps of other sincere seekers struggling for spiritual progress. You are the chosen few who have been spotted, singled out andaccepted for initiation into the Mysteries of the Beyond. You have toreview your out-going year and start anew with renewed zeal andenthusiasm to march ahead on the holy Path in the ensuing year.Let your light so shine that men may see your good works and glorifyyour Father which is in heaven. With all love and best wishes,Yours affectionately,

The temptation"And the serpent said unto the woman : Ye shall not ceriainly die : forGod doth know that in the day ye eat !hereof, then your eyes shall beopened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil."Brother, our Life is not just an amusing game thatstarts at the moment of our birth, lasts until the sudden stroke of deathcuts off its strength and goes the way it came !An Oracle, a riddle is our short life ;id est to know what the serpent said to Eve :"God can be known by knowing ourself! ... So strive to taste thisknowledge, awake and live !"You nod and you pretened to know that simple saying ;but there's the root of our misfortune; there's the rub:that double ignorance, inertness, life enshrining ina Sun : the Son of God ! ... Yet take a spud,to prune the bushy tree of atheism, of self-conceit in you.Apollo by his arrows will thus the beast subdue !Transform thyself! The locust-tree is Circe's purslane-herb,that keeps you inert or paralysed among the swine-herd !By tilling Hell - 0 Dimitra !- Olympus soon appears ;the gloomy dark with its hellish monsters disappears,Our sight and hearing regain their pristine powerand thus to quit this earth the welcome strikes hour. Our body, like a flower-pot, contains a deathless seed. Are you the gardener ? Right understandingIndia is preparing to celebrate Mahatma Gandhi's birth centenary onOctober 2, 1969. Eminent Gandhians, intellectuals and spiritual leadersassembled early in October this year at Acharya Vinoba Bhave's Ashram atBodh Gaya - a place where Buddha attained enlightenment more I han 2,500years' ago-to discuss and find ways of creating a climate of peace and understandingin the world. The Master, Sant Kirpal Singh Ji Maharaj, and a few other spiritualleaders like Swami Sardanand and Shri Ravi Shankar Maharaj were amongthose invited to attend the deliberations. Besides Acharya Vinoba Bhave, thedistinguished Gandhians included Kaka Kalelkar, Mr. Jayaprakash Narayan,Mr. R. R. Diwaker, Chairman, Gandhi Smarak Nidhi (Gandhi MemorialFoundation), and some of Gandhiji's close associates like Dr. Sushila Nayarand Mr. Shriman Narain, Governor of Gujarat. We publish below a summary of the Master's lucid and enlighteningtalk delivered at the conference.AKA Kalelkar has spoken beauti-K fully on four points - spirituality, science, technology and orthodoxy. Whatis spirituality ? It is no spiritism, no spiritualism,no hypnotism and no mesmerism. It is a subj-ct of szlf-analysis-to knowone's Self and Overself. All the world'sscriptures enj3in to know Self. Thesescriptures are fine records of the valuableexperiences th: sages and seers had withthemselves and with the Truth (God).Past Masters speak through these holybooks, the right interpretation of whichcan be given only by those who have hadthe same experience. Senerally, peopledraw inferences and give out what theyfeel. So when we will know our Self, werealise that we are all of the same essenceas that of God. Those who had met thepast Masters in their lives were able tohave some experience, but when they leftus, various schools of thought called so-cial religions were established to keeptheir teachings alive. We are human-beings first and bear labels to show as towhich particular school we belong toin order to know Self and God.Spirituality is different from the outwardreligious observances. So long asthe practical Masters were present, everythingwent on all right. Later, for wantof Masters with practical experience, thesame good old custom corrupted itself.Formations resulted in stagnation am!stagnation in deterioration. Again whenMasters came on the scene, they gave usthe right import.Scientists are doing research in allspheres of life and they have found outsome gleanings of the Truth. Somescientists met me in the U.S.A. I toldthem that they had made wonderfulresearch in the realm of energy and askedthem whether they were able to create anounce of consciousness. They replied inthe negative. They said that analysing

the atom, they had found that there wasa rhythmic and controlled movement inthem. What is that power which keeps theminutest atoms under control ? Nowscience has discovered a sound principleand flickering of light in the atoms. Werespect science. It is finding out somethingin the laws of nature. We should developphysically, intellectually as well asspiritually. There are t%o aspects of religion. Oneis called Apravidya and the other Paruvidya.Apravidya consists of forms, ritualsand other performances related to mindand outgoing faculties, which are meantfor the preparation of the ground. Theseare good actions and will result in goodreactions, but we cannot escape the cycleof births and deaths. Unless one becomesthe conscious co-worker of theDivine Plan by rising above body-consciousness,one cannot shed one's ego. While worshipping we generally light acandle and ring a bell which is a symbolof Light of God effulgent in the body.Hindu temples are mostly dome-shapped.Christian churches are nose-shappedwhich are made after the model of ahuman dody. We attach too much importanceto our bodies and stick to theouter symbols, forgetting the true Lightof God and Music of the Spheres rever -berating in us and in all the creation.Outer forms and rituals have taken theplace of the gleanings of Truth within.Man has three aspects. Besides havingbody and mind, he is a consciousentity. He has made wonderful progressin the medical sciences for maintenanceof the body. Ow intellect hasinvented radio and television. We cansee and hear people from hundreds ofmiles. Efforts are now being made toreach the moon. But with all thesescientific advancements we are not happy. The reason is that we know little or prac-tically nothing about our own soul. Weseem to know only what we have read inthe scriptures. Have we ever studiedourselves ? God made man and gave allmen equal privileges. Born the sameway, all normal humanbeings have twoeyes, two hands, two ears and other outgoingfaculties. The inner compositionof man is also the same. It has heart, lungs and brain etc. Man's body is atrue temple in which we as well as ourControlling Power reside. Tile Upanishadssay: 'Who is that maker who made thiswonderful house of the body in which welive.' It has nine apertures-two eyes, twoears, two nostrills, mouth and two underneath. The one living in the body connotrun away from it. Breathing goes out, itcannot remain outside. Some Power ispushing it back into the body. We haveto know that Power which is controllingus in the body and that is called God orTruth. There is no high or low, Godhas made every one equal. It is wc whohave made high or low. If we have rightunderstanding that God made man withequal privileges and soul residing thereinis of the same essence as of God, it willresult in right thoughts, right speech andright actions. We will have respect forall mankind. We arc all one as man andas soul. We are conscious entitles of thesame essence of God.All the differences can be solved withright understanding. Darkness cannotbe removed by fighting but by just havinga ray of light of right understanding. We should sit together in the companyof the spiritual people, those who haveexperience with their Self and the Overself, and have heart to heart talk withthem. We then will come nearer Truth. This we can do only on the level of manor on the level of soul. If we will haveexperience of Truth, we will understandthat we are all children of the same Light. We are brothers and sisters in God andchildren of the same Father.

Evolution and liberationDr. George Arnsby JonesSPIRANTS to the spiritual path ask:A "Why am I doing this ? I am notunhappy with my present situation onearth, why then should I be so concernedwith spiritual liberation ?" Such questionsbeg the most important question ofthe necessity (or otherwise) for thehumanbeing to strive for jivun mukti, orfreedom from the Wheel of Birth andDeath. It is certainly true that somespiritual aspirants appear to have morefavourable worldly circumstances thanothers ; but individual good or bad conditionsin the present life-span are not inthemselves reasons for spiritual aspiration. It is a fact that the ultimate objective ofman's evolution is to return to the TrueAbode of Grace as a self-conscious andGod-conscious entity. The "prodigalson" must return Home after his aeonsof human and subhuman experience. Wehumanbeings havb passed through countlessaeons of evolution ; is it not timethat we endeavoured to conlplete the longcycle that was ordained by the SupremeLord ?The great Masters speak of the totalityof physical life as the "Wheel of theEightyfour" as a reference to the factthat the evolving consciousness must passthrough eightyfour hundered thousandtypes of incarnated beings. This is aclose approximation of the exact numberof living species, which are as follows :Three million species of plant life. Two million seven hundred thousandspecies of insects. One million four hundred thousandspecies of birds.Nine hundred thousand species ofwater animals.Four hundered thousand species ofland animals, including men andother beings related to men. Thus it takes eight million four hundredthousand types of embodied life tolead to the human peak of physical creation. The individual entity, dependingon his own spiritual endeavours, mayonly have to pass through part of thisgreat evolution. But, in any case, thetask of this painful planetary evolutioncould be completed at the present time bythe truly aware humanbeing with thehelp of a living Master. If the individualstill asks "why", then, let him visualisethe billions of years that Kal has beenallowed to evolve humanity to its presentstatus. Think of the fire-mist of the infantearth, moving towards the sun and theneventually cooling, so that the atmosphericsteam could eventually become the waterof the oceans. Think of the early protoplasm, which responded to the rays ofsunlight piercing the depths of the ocean, and evolved into amoebae and algae andcellular life in the seas of this planet.Even the primordial cell responded to thesunlight and drew itself upwards and outof the sea ; should not man raise himselffrom out of the "Sea of Matter"? Theplant kingdom of this planet evolved, andthe great oceanic monsters arrived, evolvingin their turn into the amphibianswhich went ashore ; through the mightyreptiles, the saurians, and the dinosaurs, the creative force aspired towards betterand higher forms of life. Then, when theminor planetary cycle was completed, the

great cataclysms and land-slides began ;the continents were created, and themountains and the plains were etchedout. Then, after the completion of the oldplanetary cycle, a new cycle commenced. In this chapter of material life the appearanceof mammals took place, and alsothe beginning of the Tertiary period withthe development of more animals andplants. The giant animals graduallvbecame extinct, ' the mammoths diedout, and left a few surviving bettermouldedstrains like elephants and rhinoceri. The forest apes and aurochsappeared, and then emerged the crown ofplanetary creation: man. From his socalledStone Age origins man has builtand destroyed great civilizations. In hisendeavnur to see higher levels of knowledge,he created mythologies and thesocial religions and the many philosophiesof life. His conquest of his physicalenvironment proceeded apace, and in thelast century he has witnessed the creationof flying machines, the splitting of theatom, the development of the atomicbomb and nuclear power, and he is nowmaking tremendous endeavours to overcomethe frontiers of physical outer-space.And with his passion for the creation ofspace-ships and orbital satellites, man(and Western man particularly) has veeredaway from the needful exploration of"inner space."Thus it can be seen that the motivatinglife-stream, originating from thathighest source which is God, informs theentire scheme of planetary evolution, just as it informs the entire cosmos ofspirit, mind and matter. Life is multidimensional, for that which appears tohave no relationship upon one dimensionof consciousness will be seen to possess adefinite relationship upon another dimension.Man's own soul stems from theSupreme Being, but he is also related tomany orders of being on the "Wheel ofthe Eightyfour" and in order to reachhuman maturity he finds it necessaryto understand his relationship to otherorders of being. Conscious knowledgeof higher levels of life brings in its trainspiritual riches and inner vision. Thesethings must be consciously apprehendedfor without such spiritual apprehensionof his true heritage a inan is like thepauper who lived all his life in a hovelwithout knowing that a vast treasure washidden under the floorboards. This innerwisdom (which could be termed "faith-through-knowledge") can usher in thespiritual adulthood of man, and throughsuch conscious faith he can be reSorninto higher levels of being. He will reachthe understanding that the life-force isdifferentiated through man forms, butthat life itself can never be divided onceit has attained the unified consciousnessof spiritual reality. All things are relatedto each other through the kinship ofprimal, homageneous being ; and allthings ultimately relate back to the Sup-reme Lord. Even Kal, the wielder of thenegative, downward-flowing current ofcreation, is himself truly a servant of theSupreme Lord, for there is really nonegation in cosmic creation, only theapparent negations created by the disorientedconsciousness of man and hisconflicting terminologies. If man insists on remaining bound inthe thraldom of mind and matter, then hedefeats the entire process of evolution thatpreceded him. Even the protoplasm atthe bottom of the ocean bed aspired to thesunlight. The primordial cell developeda mobility which was achieved by its ownaspiration ; it stretched itself to a thin,hair-like structure, and at the extremepoint of its elongated extensity it fasteneditself by suction to whatever objectwas available-mineral or vegetable-(Cantitrued on page 31)

Message of the GospelsBhadra Sena' I courtsel thee to buy of me gdd tried in the fire ..'HE Holy Bible occupies a uniqueT place among the scriptures of theworld. It contains gems of spiritualtruths veiled and encrusted though theymight have become by lapse of time andlinguistic changes. One has, therefore,to decipher the correct import of whatChrist meant when he gave his messageabout a couple of thousand years ago.Great religious teachers come with adirect commission from above and speak11ke 'one having authority'. Their purposeis to raise humanity in the scales ofhigher values in life. Their appeal is notsectarian but universal to all mankind. They address the multitudes and themasses as they come in their way. Theytake man as man apart from all kinds ofdistinctive labels-formal and traditional.territorial and sectional, tribal and racial, national and international. They try todraw man out of the level of the sensessensesroaming into the fields of senseenjoymentsin the world without and inall that is worldly.Christ began his teachings among thegalileens, most of whom were moneychangers,tax-gatherers, pharisees andscribes, who worshipped diverse gods ofunknown origin coming down to themfrom their forefathers. They were hardof heart and given over to all sorts ofweaknesses to which an average man getsaddicted.Christ came down to carry out hiscommission and he declared : 'I donothing of myself; but as my Father hastaught me, I speak these things' (John8:28). His philosophy may be summedup in three simple words-Love, Light andLife-which significantly signify threeaspects of Godhood. God is loving andliving Light running through enternityfrom the beginning of time. He is enliveninghis creation with His Love andLight. There is no wonder then thatJesus, permeated as he was with the everexistingChrist-power, declared that hewas the 'Light of the world' (John 8:12),and as he saw the self-same light inothers as in himself, addressed them inmuch the same strain-'ye are the light ofthe world' (Matt. 5:14). He promisedeveryone the 'Light of Life' in the bewilderingdarkness prevailing on the sensualplane, and assurcd : 'He that followethme shall not walk in darkness but shallhave the Light of Life.'Christ never intanded to found anynew religion nor he ever professed to doso nor at any stage he claimed prophethoodfor himself. 'Think not that I amcome to destroy the law and the prophets:I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil'(Matt. 5:17). Such were the sweet, simple' and unsophisticated words inwhich he expressed his mission. What was the law to fulfil which hehad come ? It was no other than that ofhis Father's-the Law of God, alreadyexisting from time immemorial. It iswrought in the very pattern of all thatexists and in which we live, move and

have our very being though, conditionedas we are, we may not be conscious ofthe same. He came to wake up mankindto the reality of God's Law which, in thevortex of the world, often gets lost, timeand again. As we get inore and moreexistentialists, we grow more and moreinsentitive, nay impervious, to the healthierand holier influences of the Godpowerin us. The more we drift awayfrom the centre of our being towards thecircumference of our existence, the morewe get far removed from the 'Self' in usand from the Law of God. The result, more often than not, is that like seaweedswe begin to float on the surface ofthe sea with no roots stretching inwards. This being the case, we are unwittinglycarried away by the tides of time for lackof moorings to steady our frail barque intumult of life. Yet in this hopeless andhelpless state, the merciful and lovingFather though 'long suffering to usward'cannot for long remain a silent spectator. His inherent compassion moves him tothe prime need of the hour to save Hisfloundering children. As man is to bethe teacher of man, He puts on the vileattire of flesh so as to be like us andcomes as His own Messiah with Hismessage of hope, redemption and restitutionof such as are prepared to listen toand act up to his advice. When the Lord came in the likenessof Master Jesus, he held out hope toeverybody, even to the most reprobateand the worst of sinners-hope for theKingdom of God. It was the commonheritage of all and not a preservedsanctuary for people professing faithin one or the other religious creeds orsocial orders. He prepared the peoplefor this glorious state of the mind-'themind transformed by renewing'-andinvited them to take a befitting andhonourable place in one of the 'manymansions in the house of His Father'(John 14:2).The redemption of mankind, Jesusdeclared, was the purpose and plan ofGod. What in man had to be redeemed ?The human spirit or soul. And fromwhom? The mind-'the carnal mind'born of the 'corruptible seed'. And why ?'For to be carnally minded was death, but to be spiritually minded was life andpeace' (Ro. 8:6). Jesus could not bear thesight of the creation groaning and travailingin pain and writhing in agony foradoption. So as a good shepherd, Jesusmoved from place to place to seek andfind the 'lost sheep', wherever they couldbe found. 'The prodigal children' of Godhad to be gently persuaded and won overand brought back to the Home of theFather with joyous greetings (Luke15:ll-32).The next step after redemption wasrestitution or restoration--restoring thespirit to her lawful place in the Kingdomof God. The spirit is spoken of as ahigh born lady-born of the royal blood."God is Spirit' and so is the soul. 'Theythat worship Him, must worship Him inspirit and in truth' (John 4:24). Onehas, therefore, to be transformed intospirit to taste of the Spirit and Power ofGod and to dwell in His holy hill'-the'land of uprightness'.All these things meant to Jesus thefulfilling of the Law-the Law of God tosave His children wandering like babes inthe wilderness of the world. And for a11this, he had to wearily trudge the hardand tortuous path of self-abnegation andsuffered untold humiliations and inhumanindignities just for the sake ofsuffering humanity. The advent of Jesus into the worldwas heralded with the angelic song-'Glory to God in the highest,/And onearth peace and goodwill towards men'(Luke 2:14). And when he came toearth in human flesh, he declared : 'I

delight to do Thy Will. Thy Law is withinmy heart.' Thus we see that the Son ofman came 'not to destroy men's lives, butto save them' (Luke 9:56). Herein wesee the plan and purpose of the Godmanin fulfilling God's Law-'to seek andto save that flhich was lost' (Luke 19: 10).Now as to the means evmployed byJesus for working out the Will cf God.Love is the key-note in the teachings ofJesus. In unmistakable words, he proclaimsthe essence of God's nature aslove, and obedience to God and His Lawas love-in-action. He emphasises :'Thou shalt love the Lord thy Godwith all thy heart and with all thymind; with all thy strength and withall thy soul.'This is the great and first commandment.''And a second is like unto it, thoushalt love thy neighbour as thyself.'On these two commandments hangeththe whole law and the prophets'(Matt. 22:37-40).Lest there may still be the leastshadow of doubt on this vital issue, Jesusgoes on to explain :'Ye have heard that it hath been said :Thou shalt love thy neighbour, andhate thine enemy.'But I say unto you, love yourenemies, bless them that curse you,do good to them that hate you, andpray for them that despitefully use,and persecute you; ...'For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? ...'And if ye salute your brethern onlywhat do ye more than others?' ... ...(Matt. 5:43-48).The apostles after Christ elaboratedthis theme. St. Paul, addressing theRomans, said :'Let love be without dissimulation.'Love worketh no ill to his neighbour:therefore love is the fulfilling of thelaw'-(the Law of God). And then to the Galatians :'By love serve one another. For allthe law is fulfilled in one word, evenin this;'St. Peter, in lucid terms, said :'See that ye love one another witha pure heart fervently.' (Pet. 1:22).Love is both the means and the endin God-realisation. As love flows directlyfrom God, it has, therefore, to beknown and understood in 'the holy hill'of God in the human body, before it canrightly be practised in the work-a-dayworld. One must first be moved by anintense love and longing for God to gainadmission into the human laboratory fortaking his lessons in love in its fullness.Without this there is no way-out. Thisis the first essential on the Godway.St. John has aptly said : 'He that lovethnot (God for God's sake), knoweth notGod; for God is love'-(I John 4:8).Love for God and the Kingdom ofGod is the basis of all virtues. 'Love yethe Kingdom of God and all things shallbe added unto you' (Luke 12:31). Lovein its efflorescence brings forth the flowersand fruits of all that is noble and divinein life; to wit, truthfulness, chastity, humility, non-injury, selfless service andsacrifice.Having laid the foundation of histeachings on love beginning from the lovefor God and culminating in the love forman-Jesus goes on to raise the super-

structure of his edifice of the Kingdom ofGod by means of the two-fold principleof the Light af God and the Life of Godand invites all to enter into it and enjoylife eternal. As to the Kingdom of which Jesusheld the keys, he tells us plainly: 'Mykingdom is not of this world' (John18:36). His kingdom is the Kingdom ofGod of which it is said : 'The Kingdomof God cometh not by observation; theKingdom of God is within you' (Luke17:20-21). As to who can enter into theKingdom of God and see God, Jesus tellsus : 'Blessed are the poor in spirit : fortheirs is the Kingdom of Heaven,' Andagain : 'Blessed are the pure in heart forthey shall see God' (Matt. 5:3 & 8). Hethen goes on to explain : 'Verily, I sayunto you, it is hard for a rich man toenter into the Kingdom of Heaven. Andagain I say unto you, it is easier for acamel to go through the needle's eye, thanfor a rich man to enter into the Kingdomof God' (Matt. 19:23-24). And why ?'Ilecause strait is the gate, and narrow isthe way which leadeth unto life, and fewthere be that find it' (Matt. 7:14). Finally, the position is clarified succinctly andbeautifully : 'Not everyone that saithunto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into theKingdom of Heaven; but he that doeththe Will of my Father which is in Heaven'(Matt. 7:21).Further the Gospels provide certainpre-requisites which have to be fulfilledfor the life of the spirit in heaven :Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God-(John 3:3).Except a man be born of water andof the spirit, he cannot enter intothe Kingdom of God-(Jchn 3:5).Flesh and blood cannot inhefit theKingdom of God-(Cor. 1:47).When a person qualifies himself thus, then he waiks not after the flesh but afterthe spirit. He, as enjoined and instructed, daily takes up his cross after the fashionof Master Jesus and accompanies himthrough the val!ey of the shadow ordeath undeterred; 'swallowing up deathin victory' like St. Paul who delighted to'die daily' as we read in the Corinthians. Thus we see that the problem resolvesitself into one of transformation frombeing in flesh to being in spirit. It is thespirit alone that can pass through thestrait gate which is no bigger than theneedle's eye and tread the narrow pathleading to salvation and life eternalnarrowerthan the hair and sharper thanthe sword's adge. One has, therefore,to be 'in the spirit', like St. Johnthe revelator, to have the Kingdom ofGod revealed to him. The spirit must'come over' the tebernacle of flesh as theSaint tells us emphatically by so oftenrepeating the words 'he that overcometh'in his Revelations. To rise above bodyconsciousnessis a must in order to havean out-of-body experience as it is. St.Plutarch likens the experience of the soulinitiated into the Mysteries of the Beyondto that of actual death. How this transmutation comes about ?God is great and His Power is greaterstill. One must learn to know the will ofGod and to understand His Law. TheLaw of God is 'Perfect, Holy, Just andGood' for it is of the spirit and hencespiritual (Ro. 7 : 12-14). It is writ in theheart of each one of as, but we, being inthe body, are not conscious of it. Butwhen one 'overcomes' or comes over thebody, he begins to learn of it by actualexperience as the spirit peepsthrough the 'the needle's eye.' Thistranscension or transcendence is nothingbut transhumanisation of the human inman. Whosoever becomes a spirit, com-

plete in himse!f, 'he gains life eternal andis not hurt of second death' (Rev.2: 11).Jesus tells us in so marly ways of theSpirit and Power of God and tries toestablish a conscious contact with Him.God absolute is an abstraction with allHis powers of omnipresence, omniscience, omnipotence, omniecstasance and omnirefulgencecompletely involved inHimself. In this unmanifested stateHe can neither be seen nor heard.'How can we believe in One Whomwe have not seen or heard ? Butwhen He becomes God-in-action, Hecomes into being and manifests Himselfin His creation, endowing everything with'His Light and Life in varying degrees atdifferent strata of existence, but fully inman created in His own image and with,'His breath of life', quickening him withthe living soul.God and the law of God, the Gospelstell, are revealed to man in His own Lightand Life which St. John figurativelycalls the Word-the 'Holy Word' or 'theHoly Ghost-'the great Comforler' or'the Spirit of Truth.' It is this Wordwhich descended like a dove when Jesusbaptized those who came into his fold forbeing saved. Baptism by the touch of aGodman or by transmission of his lifeimpulsethrough his eyes which pour outthe water-of-life on the disciple works asa process of inner sanctification enablingthe Godnlan 'to uphold with His righthand,' the spirit in man, to give someesoteric experience of the astral world orthe world of the spirit. What is this Light of God and whatthe Life of God? And how the spirit experiencesthem in the sanctuary of theLord? The Word of the Most High-HisSpirit and Power- as it revolves in spaceand out of space, in the process of creatingand sustaining vast universes, pro-duces Light and Sound by His self-vibratorymotion. This is the Light of Godand the Voice of God (His Life Breath)which Plato, the ancient Greek philosopher(400 B.C.), called the Music of theSpheres, Similarly, S. T. Coleridge(1772-1834) speaks of the 'One lifewithin us and abroad' which is 'soul of allmotion' and appears as : 'A light insound, and sound-like power in iight.'This then is the 'Spirit and Power ofGod' - the Light and Life of God-thatcan at once be seen and heard, not by theeyes and ears of the flesh which are butouter instruments as aids in the phenomenalworld; but by the subtle senseswithin, the essential features of thenoumenon. True knowledge or the experienceof Truth is an action of the soul, sure and perfect with mathematicalprecision without the senses. The Law and the Will of God wasdeclared and made manifest as a directrevelation of the Word-the Light ofLife-by Master Jesus to those whoaccepted him and put their faith in him.In the Gospels, God is described as 'theFather of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning' (James1:17). St. John, conveying the message hehad heard said: 'God is light, and in Himis no darkness at all' (I John 1:5). Jtmeans God is Sovereign Light, the Lightof lights, pure and immaculate, uncreateand shadowless. It is this 'Heavens' Light'that guides aright. The immortal flame ofthis shineth in each one of God's childrenon earth. We all live by His Light. And itis His Light that lighteth everything. 'It isthe true Light, which lighteth everymanthat cometh into the world. The Lightshineth in darkness (the darkness of thegrave-like tabernacle of the flesh), andthe darkness comprehendzth it not (John1:5 & 9). St. Luke sounds a note ofstern warning : 'Take heed therefore, thatthe light which is in thee be not darkness:'

(1:3). And as to where this light isand how it can be kept on untarnished,it is said: 'The light of the body is theeye: if therefore thine eye be single, thywhole body shall be full of light' (Matt.6: 22). So the matter is one of developing'the single eye' in the body, to witness theglorious light of God and to live eternallytherein. Now we have to see what the Gospelstell us of the 'Life of God'. God is a lifeprincipleor the audible life-stream continuousand unbroken. As in His Lightso in His Life, there is no variableness. It is the 'Power of God' as holy Light isthe 'Spirit of God.' Both taken together, constitute the Word of the Wordless andthe Name of Nameless - 'the Namegreater than whom no name exists'. 'TheWord of God runneth swiftly' from endto end carrying out the plan and purposeof God. Together they form the substratumof all that exists. St. John theprince among mystics, begins his Gospelwith a beautiful revelation about themystic Word :"In the beginning was the Word, andthe Word was with God, and theWord was God. The same was inthe beginning with God. All thingswere made by Him and withoutHim was not anything made thathath been made. In Him was life, and the life was the !ight of men."Whosoever ascends to the 'holy hill'and stands in the 'holy place,' the Wordof God-His Light and Life-open up theinner eye, the single eye, referred to aboveand unstop the inner ear to receiveinstruction and guidance directly fromthe Power of God. About thePower of the Word it is said : Takese heed according to the Word, the 'Wordof truth.' 'Quicken yourself by the Powerof the Word. In Him is the Light ofLife' (light emanating from the audiblelife-stream). We live because the Wordupholds us. The Word helps the soul'to escape as a bird out of the snares ofthe fowlers' (the mind and the senses),breaking the snares right through, makingthe soul 'quiet even as a weaned child'.In the presence of the Word 'the nightshineth as the day, making the darknessand the light both ablaze. 'His Wordsendeth forth commandments upon theearth' and whosoever listens to the Word, everything becomes known, the past, thepresent and the future like an open book.It is the open-sesame that flings openthe portals to divine wisdom, knowingwhich all becomes known and nothingremains to be known."The Word of God is very pure andtrue from the beginning of time.' Blessedis the Name of God. And blessed are thepeople who know 'the joyful sound' forthey walk in the light of His countenance. It is an eye-salve that lightens the eyeslest one may sleep in death. Whosoeverhears His Voice, even the dead (dead spiritua!y)is awakened into life spiritual andbegins to sing praises of the Lordifrom therising of the sun to the setting thereof.Jesus was not a mere theorist, nor aphilosopher nor a theologian. He wasessentially a practical teacher who hadlearnt life by digging hard at the roots oflife. He was well versed both in thetheory and the practice of the sciencespiritual. Whatever theology he had, wasnot a dogmatic theology based on theauthority of organised bodies. It wasneither speculative in character, springingfrom human thinking. nor was it syste-matic, depending on any rationalisedsystem or school of thought. It waspurely a positive theology that rested onrevelation or direct and immediate personalexperience within in the cave oftransfiguration where transmutation(Continued on page 30)

Sanctuary of living MasterDr. John H. LovelaceDearest children of Light,Greetings to each of you in His holy Name.In addition, may I extend my tha~iks for the privilege of being with youthis commemorative day of the gentle rain ?It is but a time in memory that we walked from the cave of darkness andthe limitation upon our conscious self into the radiance of the risingSun of God's day.One has come from the prodigal pain of illusion into the Light that dispelsthe darkness. All can know the liberation from the bondage of time and matter, and havepeace where there is nothing but agony. The journey into the far country of mind has only prepared us for the welcomeinto our Father's Home. The gentle rain of Sawan has brought the cool waters of life to the parchedsouls of men.For a moment the heart stands still. It must stand still in deference to the Sound that comes from above ourlimitations. The radiant glory of peace everlasting. The eternal chant of an estate of consciousness long lost in our wanderings. The ancient formula of mystic alchemy that makes gods of struggling men. These are the symbols of soul- the symbols of soul searching. For all who seek the Light , for all who would know God.The thunder of thought must revelkrate in the canyons of desire so intensethat the mountains of illusion will fall.Man stancis unique in creation. He is a pendant upon the golden chain of Love.He visions God.He sees multifarous furms of God's manifestation. He reaches out but cannot touch. He hears but does not heed. There is blindness upon his eyes and the heaviness of clay in his ears. And for all he is-great and small. He has yet to rest upon the breast of his Beloved.Man pains because he has a limited consciousness.Godmen also bear pain, but orily because they assume a consciouslimitation.Godmen know that they know.Men have no knowledge of then knowing.

The Master (centre), addressing a meeting in Washington. In the backgroundare Madam Har Devi and Baron W. F. Von Blomberg, Co-President of theWorld Fellowship of Religions.

The shattering s~unds of man's screaming drowns the paeans of peace.Only in the truth that is found in the hidden center will be found myBeloved's face. The little self of man flits like a twittering bird in a rosewood tree.Never still, never silent, never knowing the fruit of the fiower.Yet when the sounds are gone and darkness has drowned the forms intothe nothingness of not knowing. God remains.God outlasts us all-each and everyone. And in so doing he will claim us all and the veil will be burned. As the morning sun consumes the fog at dawn. The key for man is alignment. The answer is not in abstraction but in combining what one may have inthe way of mental enlightenment and so-called conscious intelligencewith the highest spiritual insight that can be provided. With thispremise, spiritual achievment is a certainty of all certainties. One must also have the stability of strength that permits a posture ofpurpose in an environment that is ever changing and at best hostile. It is the soul that is sending forth the challenge. It is the mind that says to set aside the patience of understanding whichresults in powerful protest and the destruction of equipoise. The way of the Path is seen with a steady inner vision, divorced from theouter manifestations of mind. You and I are not here to prove or disprove immortality.Nor are we here to know or not know survival. Our purpose is comradeship.. .Our companion in life is to be found in one whose life is love ....Our companion in life is to be found in one whose life is God.When you have fulfilled this purpose as stated by all lovers of God, youwill reach unity. No longer will disunity sever your search for happiness, contentment will be yours. And when you havc found contentment and happiness you have walkedthrough the door of illusion into the realm of reality. You have no opportunity to resign from your desire to find God.The challenge of the soul is as eternal as the soul itself. It gives no rest from minute to minute-hour to hour-day to day-weekto week-year to year-birth to birth-age to age.You have belonged to God since the beginning of time. And there was nobeginning. You are-you are of God-and in your essence there isnothing but God.Be thankful if you are short circuited from the consciousness of the crowd. The responsibility you bear to self supercedes all else. When you assume this responsibility you will be so re-oriented, that worldsupon worlds will kiiow your strength. The challenge that is laid before us is not an easy one.We have asked for it, and our longing has brought it into our consciousness. It will never leave and will ever be a stimulus to our search.

Our limitations create the mortar of doubt, but if there is a continualvigilance with attention to the admonitions of our spiritual companionwho walks as a man, then the revelation of reality will permit usvision in proportion to our daily efforts. The teacher had a teachx.. . the teacher is.. . he knows. The field of experience must be tilled with service and dedication. When this is done, and the gentle soft rain of Sawan's grace does fall, theharvest of achievement will fill the granaries with goodness everlasting. You need not strive for vision. Truth is imparted as a bounty of conciousorientation towards God. This is inherent in the efforts toward selfrealisation. This is the immediate obligation. When the mind is sodisciplined towards soul, the adjustment between what is specific andgeneral, particular and universal, temporal and eternal, is a spontaneousawakenimg. We are not yet perfect. There is much path ahead, but the Way is sureand the Guide is true,- hand in hand we walk, driven by longings.Tethered by immanent truth. Caressed by divine love ... and alwayscounseled by the gentle voice of our constant companion who sees notwhat miserable creatures we appear, but strips us into the naked beautyof soul supreme. On this day, yesterday, tomorrow-all is one ... and He walks with us.. .Eternal is his name.Love is his game.My Love lives in the garden of the gods ...There where the white deer play.My Love walks among fragrant flowers.. .And the Light is an eternal day.My Love smiles a blessing of bliss ...Bound in a song unknown to the lark.My Love whispers the joy of Name ...Blossom of the soul stands out of the dark.My Love lives in the garden of the gods ...Beyond all things that mortal may be.My Love lives deep in my soul ...Love knows love.. .God in thee.Meats for the belly and the belly for meats ; but God shall destroy bothit and them. Now the body is not for the Lord ; and the Lord forthe body.-Corinthians I, 6:13.

Mystical poetryDr. Vinod SenaHE function of true art is to harmaniseT the soul of man with the immenseuniverse surrounding him, in which hedivines a procession which is orderly, anorder which is harmonious, a procession,an order, a harmony which obey, as law,a Will, infinitely above him, infinitesimallycareful of him-the many millionmillionthpart of a speck of dust, yetsentient.Great thinkers have all recognisedthis order. Indeed they must, for itconditions their thinking. If the universewere a chaos, which is anarchy, anyconnected thought would be impossibleand we no better but worse than blindmen jostled about by a crowd. The poets, and philosophers withpoetry in their souls, attempt by manyparables to convey their sense of thisgrand, harmonious, universal orchestralmovement. In Plato there is a story of Er thePamphylian, whose relatives after tendays sought his dead body on the battlefield, and found it without taint ofcorruption; and how on the twelfth day, being laid on the pyre, he came back tolife and told them where he had wanderedin the other world, and what seen; butchiefly of the great spindle on the kneesof Necessity, reaching up to heaven andturning in eight whorls of graduatedspeed-and on the rim of each sits aSiren, who revolves with it, hymning asingle note; the eight notes togetherforming one harmony.Hearken to Mi!ton :-Then listen ITo the celestial Sirens' harmonyThat sit upon the nine infoldedspheresAnd sing to those that hold the vitalshears,And turn the adamantine spindleroundOn which the fate of gods and menis woundSuch sweet compulsion doth inmusic lie,To lull the daughters of NecessityAnd keep unsteady Nature to her law,And the low world in measuredmotion drawAfter the heavenly tune. This parable presents a truth, and oneof the two most important truths in theworld-the universe is not a chaos but aharmony. Now the other and only equallyimportant truth in the world is that thismacrocosm of th2 univers:, with itsharmony, cannot be apprehended at allexcept as it is focussed upon the eye, intellect and soul of man, the microcosm. All systems of philosophy inevitably workout to this, that the universal harmonyis meaningless and nothing to man save inso far as he can apprehend it and that hecan apprehend it only by reference tosome corresponding harmony in himself. He is, but the million-millionth atom ofa speck. Nontheless that atom, beingsentient, is reflective, being reflective, draws and contracts the whole into itstiny ring, Impercipient, what were we butdead things ?Rolled round in earth's diurnal courseWith rocks, and stones, and trees.Percipient-solely by the grace of

percipience, we are inheritors of it all,and kings. To quote one of the poets,Traherne, with whom I am to deal :But little did the infant dreamThat all the treasures of the worldwere by :And that himself was so the creamAnd crown of all which round aboutdid lie,Yet thus it was; the Gzm,The Diadem,The ring enclosing allThat stand upon this earthly ball,The Heavenly eye,Much wider than the sky,Wherein they all included were,The glorious, Soul, that was the KingMade to possess them, did appearA small and little thing !Hear another, Henry VaughanI saw Eternity, the other night,Like a great Ring of pure andendless light,All calm, as it was bright; And round beneath it, Time, in hours, days, years,Driv'n by the spheres,Like a vast shadow mov'd.In that shadow he sees men of allsorts and conditions-the lover, the'darksome statesman', the 'fearful miser',the 'downright epicure'-pursuing theirparticular cheats of shadow :Yet some, who all this while didweep and sing,And sing and weep, soar'd up intothe Ring; But most would use no wing.'0 fools !-said I-'thus to preferdark night,Before true light !To live in grots and caves, and hatethe day,Because it shows the way,The way which from this dead anddark abodeLeads up to God,A way where you might tread theSun, and be,More bright than he !'But as I did their madnes so discusse,One whisper'd thus,'This Ring the Bride-groome did fornone provide,But for his Bride.'So we have two rings-the immenseorchestral ring of the universe wheelingabove and around us, and the tiny percipientring which is the pupil of your eyeor mine threaded to a brain-infinitesimaland yet infinitely capable. But there isone thing more to be said-and a thing offirst importance concerning this little soulof man. It instinctively aspires, yearns toknow the greater harmony, if only torender it a more perfect obedience; and itaspires, yearns, through a sense oflikeness, ~f oneness, of sonship. Manis, after a]!, a part of universe and feelsin himself a harmony correspondent withthe greater harmony of 5is quest.Traherne writes :You never enjoy the world aright, till the Sea itself floweth in your veins, till you are clothed with the heavens, andcrowned with the stars.Similarly, in Browning, we read'Johannes Agricola' :There's heaven above, and night bynightI look right through its gorgeous roof;No suns and moons though e'er sobright ;Avail to stop me, splendour-proof;I keep the broods of stars aloobFor I intend to get to God,For 'tis to God I speed so fast,For in God's breast, my own abodeThose shoals of dazzling glory, passed,I lay my spirit down at last. The question now is "how is it done"?

Well it is not done by the way of philosophy. The quarrel between philosophyand poetry is notorious and inveterate;the patronage of poetry by philosophy isas stupid as it is solemny recognisable. Forphilosophy attempts to comprehendGod's purposes into some system oranother. God, says Heine, "created manin his image-and man made haste toreturn the compliment."The poet is more modest. He aspires, not to comprehend but to apprehend, topierce, by flashes, to some point or otherof the great wheeling circle. The poetsare of more delicate mental texture thantheir fellows, and their minds have exquisitefilaments to intercept, apprehendand conduct, stray messages between theouter mystery of the universe and theinner mystery of the individual soul.Still you may ask : 'How is this apprehendingdone ? What is the process ?'There is trinity in man : What does, what knows, what is. Now throughwhat is lies the way to spiritual understanding,as all matter attracts all matterso all spirit attracts all spirit. It is onlyby becoming like them, by being likethem, that we apprehend the spiritualtruth in them. The Kingdom of heavensis within us. A lost province though.May be, but we know today, how a lostprovince will remember its parent state, how hard a road the parent will travelto recover that which was lost. Hereinlies the central tenet of the mystics. Manand the universe and God are in natureone. Unity (if we can find it) runs throughall diversities and harmonises them. Therefore to know anything of GodHimself we must be, to that extent, like God ; therefore, too, the best part ofrevenge upon an enemy (think of it, inthese days) is not to be like him.But still you ask: "What is theprocess ?" Surely that lies implicit inwhat has been said. Man has in him-I will not say a 'subliminal self'-but asoul listening within for a message ; sofain to hear that sometimes it must ariseand tip-toe to the threshold :News from a foreign country cameAs if my treasure and my wealth laythere ;So much it did my heart inflame,'T was wont to call my Soul into mineear ;Which thither went to meet,The approaching sweet,And on the threshold stood,To entertain the unknown Good,It hover'd there,As if 'twould leave mine ear,And was so eager to embrace,The joyful tidings as they came,'T would almost leave its dwelling-placeTo entertain that same. But the news comes from without, inits own good time and often in guisetotally surprising. One must await thehour and trust the invitation, neither ofwhich can be commanded. The poetsdo not read the 'Word' by vigorousstriving and learning as philosphers do.Nor do they wrestle with God ; but wait, prepare themselves and say : "Be it untome according to Thy Word." They waitin "a wise passiveness".The eye-it cannot choose but see ;We cannot bid the ear be still ;Our bodies feel, where'er they be,Against or with our will. Not less I deem that there are PowersWhich of themselves our mindsimpress ;That we can feed this mind of oursIn a wise passiveness.Think you, 'mid all this mighty sumOf things for ever speaking,That nothing of itself will come,But we must still be seeking ?

And again, this samz Wordsworth,in his Tintern Abbey tells of 'that sereneand blessed mood' wherein :the breath of this corporeal frame,And even the motion of our humanblood,Almsost suspended, we are laid asleepIn body, and become a living soul :While with an eye made quiet by thepowerOf harmony, and the deep power ofjoy,We see into the life of things. The way of the poets then is not tostrive and cry. It is enough for themto wait, receptacles of the divine passingbreath. The poet merely by waiting andtrusting arrives per salturn at truths towhich the philosopher, pack-laden andvaricose upon the military road of logic, can never reach. There yet remain two things to besaid about mysticism. The flrst is that all mystics howsoeverdiverse their outlook or inlook, havebeen curiously gracious and yet morecuriously happy men. They have found,if not contentment itself, the way ofcontentment and an anchorage for thesoul. They possess it in patience. Theyare the pure in heart and blessed becausethey see, or believe they see, God.The second is that, possessed with asense of unity in all things, likeness in allthings, every mystic has a propensity todeal in symbols.A word must be said upon a tenetof the mystical faith which naturally flowsfrom the two principles. If the universebe an ordered harmony, and the soul ofman a tiny lesser harmony, viberating toit, yearning to it, seeking to be one withit; if, again of recollection it knows itselfto have been as some time one with it,though now astray upon earth, a lostprovince of the Kingdom of God ; why, then, it follows that the king himselfpassionately seeks to recover, to retrieve, that which was lost. The idea of aChrist bruising his feet endlessly overstony places, insatiate in search of lostman, his brother, or the lost Soul, hisdesired bride, haunts all the mysticalpoetry. It haunts Quarles, but withQuarles it is rather the cry of the soul, theBride, seeking the Bridegroom : "So Imy best-Beloved's am : so he is mine."That is a refrain of Quarles, and hisconstant note. Why dost thou shade thy lovely face ?0 whyDoes that eclipsing hand of thine denyThe sunshine of the Sun's enliveningeye ?Without thy light what light remainsin me ?Thou art my life; my way, my light'sin thee ;I live, I move, and by thy beams Isee.Thou art my life,-if thou but turnaway,My life's a thousand deaths. Thouart my way, -Without thee, Love, I travel not butstray. My light thou art ; without thyglorious sight. My eyes are darken'd with eternalnight. My love, thou art my way, my life,my light.Thou art my way ; I wander if thoufly.Thou art my light ; if hid, how blindam I.Thou art my life ; if thou withdraw'st,I die.My eyes are dark and blind ; I cannotsee :(Continued on page 26)

My search for TruthDear Editor,In my search for Truth, I was wandering,so to speak, from pillar to post.I had joined various metaphysical organisationsand tried to hear every lecture thatwas given regarding truth. Still the knowledgeregarding the Ultimate Truth greatlyeluded me and I felt very disappointed anddissatisfied. It was my good fortune to have myattention directed by a friend to a seriesof lectures given by the living Master,Sant Kirpal Singh Ji, while on tour in myhome town of Philadelphia.Keep to the pathDear Editor,As soon as the Master puts you onthe spiritual Path, the Negative Powermay do his utmost to impede your progress,so that after a period of time youmay become discouraged and quit thePath. The Negative Power may lure youaway by offering you worldly things sothat you may waste your time defendingyour character.Recognise that these things arebrought about by the Negative Power todraw you off the Path. Keep doingyour spiritual practices. Do not wasteyour time defending your character orarguing with people who have no interestin the Master's work, for if you do thesethings you will do nothing else and thegreat Path of the Masters will suffer.Toronto (Canada). -Roy LangfordOn hearing this highly IlluminatedSoul speak and the announcement ofinitiation into the Science of the Soul, Iavailed myself of this opportunity. Message of the Gospels(Continued from page 15)was wrought by contacting the Spirit andPower of God, converting soul into aliving soul, as Master in the house.Jesus was a living embodiment of theaudible life-stream (Word-made-flesh)and as such called himself the bread oflife and the 'water of life' and freelyinvited all to partake of the same. Hispath was one of self-analysis, of freeingthe soul from the tentacles of the flesh andthe carnal mind, enabling the soul tojourney on the inner unearthly planesclothed in 'celestial mystical bodies' asdistinct from 'bodies natural and terrestrial'which are crossed over in the processof transformation (I Cor. 15). The naturalman was of the earth and earthy, while the inner man 'awakened into righteousness'became a living spirit as fromGod, all changed and renewed. Hencethe exhortations : 'Learn how to diethat you may begin to live'. 'Die completelyto self and rise instantly aboveit.'He wanted the people to 'perceive andunderstand' the Reality rather than merely'see and hear', of it for that would notgive them the gift of salvation or lifeeternal. (Matt. 13:14). He gave hisdisciples actual mystical experienceswithin ; which 'many prophetsand kings desired' to have, butcould not (Luke 10:24). And then commandedthem : 'What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light : and what yehear in the ear, that preach ye upon thehousetops' (Matt. 10:27).We have on record instances of directesoteric experiences of the Kingdom ofGod to his 'choosen vesse!~' like Peter,James and John who were 'taken up inspirit' into a high mountain (the point ofintersection between the two worlds, thephysical and the spiritual), and broughtthem face to face with the ancient Masterslike Moses and Elijah. (Matt. Ch. 17,Mark IX and Luke IX).Again, on the day of Pentecost, hegave them an experience of the Soundcoming from heaven, filling all the housewhere they were sitting and thcn thereappeared into them tongues of fire (heavenlylight), sitting upon each of them andfilling them with the Holy Spirit (ActsCh. 2).Last but not the least, the Book ofRevelation by St. John the divine, aboundswith graphic description of the wonderousvision, he beheld on the inner planes,.when he was 'in the spirit on the Lord's.day' and of the sealed wisdom that wasdisclosed to him by the 'Voice,' coming'as the sound of many waters', or asdulcet music as if from 'the harpers withtheir harps.'God wants man to be immortal so asto enjoy life ever-lasting but it is for manto seek for it (Ro. 2:6-7). It has to besought for and achieved right here andnow. If it is not done in the livingpresent, there is no promise of it in thehereafter.'What shall it profit a man to gainthe whole world and lose his own soul'(Luke 8:36). The very essence of soul islife for ever more. If one loses his soul, what would remain ? Nothing, but theway to devolution or going down in thescale of creation. God has, therefore tobe revealed in the human flesh and thesoul must make the most of it, in finding

the source and fountainhead of life. Thisrevelation comes through the instructionand guidance of some Godman, capableof manifesting the Will and the Law ofGod as disclosed in communion with theWord. No amount of prayers will doany good if one turneth away his ear fromhearing the Law (Prov. 28:9). The onlyway to save the soul is by 'diligentlyhearkening to the Voice of God. Aboutthis, Jesus says : 'My sheep hear myVoice, and I know them, and they followme : and I give unto them eternal life ; andthey shall never perish, neither shall anyman pluck them out of my hand'-(John10:27-28). God is the God of livingand is 'not willing that any shouldperish'-(I1 Pet. 3:9).Speaking of his commission, Jesussays : As long as I am in the world, I a nthe light of the world-(John 95). 'And,yet a little while is the light with you.Walk while ye have the light, lest darknesscome upon you : for he that walkethin darkness knoweth not whither hegoeth. While ye have the light, believein the light that ye may be the childrenof light' (John 12:35-36).'The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof butcanst not tell whence it cometh andwhither it goeth : so is everyone that isborn of the Spirit' (John 3:8). We have, therefore, to seek one born of the Spirit.May God-power guide us all to the Manof the Spirit, wherever he may be andwhatever his lineage and mode of life, buthe must be one who may make us knowonly true God and bejit us for the Kingdomof God.lll,ll,llll,llillil,III1IIIIIIIIIIIl1IllIIIIIIII1II:I:IIl~lllllllllllllllllllIlIl~llililll1I11,111,1l,I,,I1II!~III1II!IIIIlllli!llll1I11111111I11Il1*I1I!III!I11II1II1IEvolution and liberationIllll'l!:Il:Ii;ll'(Continued from page 9)and pulled itself upwards to a higherposition by returning to its original spheroidalform. Thus, it eventually reachedthe surface of th: ocean and bathed in therays of the sun. But modern man staysstill at the ocean-bed of materiality, unheeding any of the lessons of the past.Human sin comes into being when man'sfunctional behaviour remains fixed in themoulds of past epochs, so he must evolveto ever-higher levels and eventuallybecome freed from the thraldom of thelower worlds. False patterns of behaviourin the present may not have been falsepatterns of behaviour thousands of yearsago, but man's adherence or return tosuch patterns means spiritual regressionand human degradation. "Being withoutsin" implies living in the present andconstantly aspiring to serve the Master ;deneration means a return to a lowersate of evolution, causing disease andpainful evil conditions, and-in extremecases-a regression of the human personalityinto the animal kingdom.Milllons of years ago the primordialcell aspired to sunlight from its first homein the dark depths of the ocean. Consciousnesshas been evolving throughincreasingly higher forms ever since.Today, it is time that man, the pinnacleof sentient creation, realise that he cannotmark time in the thraldom of the threeworlds forever, enslaved to the inertia ofmind and matter. With the loving helpof a true spiritual preceptor-a livingMaster-man can aspire to the supernallight of his True Home, rising like a soulborneeagle through the luminous heightsof the universe within. And this is thetrue answer-not the degrees of good orbad fortune in the present life-to allthose who ask : "Why should I strivefor spiritual liberation ?" We have beenhere too long ; it is now time to return tothe Father's House.

Fromthe editor's desk0 be or not to be' is the greatest'T problem in life. But how manyof us pay heed to this problem? Veryfew indeed do it and fewer give anyserious thought to it. It may be due to ournatural lack of interest for a problemthat is not of this world-the worldwhich is too much with us, and we livegetting and spending for most part ofour life. However, one may try to avoid it andturn one's blind eye to the dire need torecognise God as the greatest fact inGod's creation and the need for man toknow and understand and to live God inevery day life, one cannot do so indefinitelyfor any length of time. Therecomes a stage, at one time or another, when one, impelled by his helplessnessand hopelessness, is forced to pause andto pondor over situations that seem toengulf and throw one overboard in thevortex of life. At moments like these, one is obliged to think for one's Self andtake a stock of his thoughts and notionson the values of life. The panorama of life is always in astate of continuous flux-moving, evermoving, along with the current of time.It has no stability and no permanence formatter is always changing and changingfroin moment to moment. Our outerSelf, the tabernacle of flesh too is a partof the material world and along with it issubject to birth, growth, adolescence, disease, decay and ultimate dissolutioncalled death-death of the flesh. Andyet in us there is the age-old innerSelf, the charioteer that survives thechariot, defies time, space and causation. This inner Self ever shines in its ownsplendour and is called the Shining One,shining through the ages and through allthe vicissitudes of time. The outer man and the inner man aretwo disparate entities-the one materialand the other non-material. How thetwo have come to be linked together? There is a Power greater than any one onearth that holds such divergent anddiversified entities so as to make aharmonious whole wherein all thingsdiffer and yet agree. It is the Power andSpirit of God that works that miracle. It is Harmony alone that can produceharmonious tunes out of discordant notes-material and spiritual. Herein lies thechoice of man-to be and not to be.One has to choose and accept the worldor the Word, the flesh or the Spirit. Thechoice is his. A man of flesh cannottread the Path of the spirit for one is ofthe corruptible seed and the other of seedincorruptible. And yet it is given toman, while living in the flesh, to develophis latent potential in him to outgrow thelimitations of the flesh against the backgroundof the Light of Life in him.If one decides and determines to be ofthe Spirit, he is sure to outsoar theshadows of the night and walk in Godlysplendour, clothed in God's Light. Allthis is possible and within the reach ofman if he is able to take a firm hold ofsome Godman, a human-pole on andthrough which the God-power works infulness to fulfil his own purpose and plan,to write, to reveal himself to those whoaspire for Him. Without an active aidand guidance of God clothed in the vilegarb of man to suffer woe, one living onthe plane of the senses all the time can donothing by himself. It is, therefore, rightly said-God Himself hath decreedthat without the Godman as revelator,He canst not be revealed.

Wisdom of the agesHere are some of the verities of' life which are eternally true. Let us takeone for cogitation each day and try to reflect the truth of it in our life. We have, ofcourse, to guard against making an alloy of it by a subtle admixture, traducing it tosuit our own commonplace convenience.<strong>Dec</strong>ember :Love never claims, it ever gives. Love ever suffers, never resents, never revengesitself.Your life is fulfilled in meditation. compassion and service.Set thine house in order for thou shall die.Be wiser than other people if you can, but do not tell them so.The highest possible stage in moral culture is when we recognise that we oughtto control our thoughts. The remedy for weakness is not brooding over weakness, but thinking ofstrength. Teach men of strength that is already within them.Idleness is only the refuge of weak minds.A man without faith is like a drop thrown out of ocean bound to perish. No youngman believes he shall ever die.God helps when one feels oneself humbler than the very dust under one's feet.Do well and right and let the world sink.Ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.A man of few words will rarely be thoughtless in his speech; he will measureevery word. The truth shall make you free.A merry heart maketh a cheerful continance. It is with our passions as it is with fire and water, they are good servants, butbad masters. One should eat not in order to please the palate, but just to keep the bodygoing. And help us, this and every day, to live more nearly as we pray.Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed.Take no heaviness to heart : drive it away and remember the last end.Wisdom denotes the pursuing of the best ends by the best means.Confession of error is like a broom that sweeps away dirt and leaves the surfacecleaner than before.Put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life. For dust thou art, and unto dust shall thou return.Without prayer there is no inn,ard peace.A man who fears suffering is already suffering from what he fears. If we had no faults we should not take so much pleasvre in noticing them inothers. So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto ourwisdom.Have mercy on us worms of earth. The pursuit of Truth is true bhakti (devotion).
