Grand Isle State ParkWelcome to Grand Isle State Park, located onSouth Hero Island in Lake Champlain. TheIsland, also known as Grand Isle, is 14 mileslong and over 3 miles wide, making it thelargest in Lake Champlain. It contains thetowns Grand Isle (on the northern half) andSouth Hero (on the southern half). The Northand South Hero Islands are named in honor ofearly pioneering Vermonters who served in theAmerican Revolution.Grand Isle State Park was opened in 1959when 54 acres of land was purchased fromBirchcliff, a private summer resort. Theoriginal acquisition included a hotel-likebuilding, cabins and a recreation hall. Today'sNature Center is the last remaining Birchcliffbuilding. Three additional propertyacquisitions brought the park to its current226-acre size. Park development during the1960's was spurred by a successful effort toattract visitors to the area by providing qualitycamping opportunities.Today, the result of that effort is apparent.Grand Isle State Park is the most-visitedcampground in the state park system. With4,150 feet of Lake Champlain shoreline, GrandIsle is popular with many destination camperswho spend their entire vacation here. At thesame time, the park location on US Route 2attracts a high number of one-night campers,while proximity to population centers inBurlington, Vermont and Montreal, Quebecmake it an easy destination for the weekend orspur-of-the-moment camper.
