SMART REPAIRS Even relatively new vehicles frequently suffer from unsightly traces of everydayuse, like scratches on the bumper as a result of clumsy parking manoeuvres, burn holes in the seatsfrom dropped cigarettes, or marks on the dashboard as souvenirs of the last house move. Danish SMART Repair specialist Henrik Bro Christensen tackles a typical repair whileautoteam watches over his shoulder.The magic suitcaseSystem B1PlasticLeather &VinylExamination“The first thing to do is: always have a goodlook at the damage,” Henrik explains. “Manyof these minor accidents can be made goodwith the help of the various repair systems.”On this Focus, a steel pipe had banged intothe dashboard as a result of braking. Thecustomer had bought some pipes from a DIYhypermarket and, as he had no roof rack,balanced them across the tops of the backseat and front passenger seat. Under heavybraking, one of the pipes broke free andbanged into the dashboard. After inspectingthe scratches, Henrik pronounces confidently:“No problem. We’ll make it good asnew.”Step by StepTaking the FSE Basic Repair Suitcase B1, hefirst cleans all round the area of the impactwith lint-free cloth and plastcleaner, thenmasks the surrounding area and tucks apiece of paper in the glove compartment.Now it’s the turn of the gun with the mouldmakercartridge. Henrik carefully flows someof the green viscous material onto an undamagedarea of the dashboard beside thescratches, then spreads it with the smallpalette knife to make a thin, even film. “In thisway, the surface pattern of the dashboard isreproduced and later copied onto the damagedspot. Don’t worry about the cast leavingtraces behind, because it won’t,” Henrikexplains. “Drying time is about five minutes.”Next he removes raised parts of the scratchesusing fine emery paper. “When doing this,try to minimise any roughening of the surroundingarea,” he advises, and then pulls offthe green moulding material which has driedin the meantime. He then places this carefullyover the damage spot, draws an outline ofthe damage on it with a pen, and lays the filmaside again. “Now I use the palette knife toapply a little B Compound carefully to thehollow and smooth it down. Now you haveto wait. When it has completely hardened, itappears a little transparent.”Heat Sealing IronThe electric heat sealing iron is the next toolto be used and Henrik illustrates what thethree indicator lights mean: “When I turn thesmall regulator to say 150° C, the yellow lampshows me that it is heating up to the desiredtemperature.
