On behalf of the Solofamily, God Bless to both of you,and may your life together befilled with many years and milesof G-Fab smiles, unbreakablecar parts, and many happy littleCorrales Novices...well, maybenot so much the last one. This Sundays layout was amix of the Nationals segments(absolutely glowing reviews onthe forums), and knitted togetherto provide some new andinteresting concepts. Of interestis that cone-calls for the mostpart were light, excepting a fewwho thought they could navigatea slot faster than physics wouldallow, or were just off-line muchmore than they should havebeen. (Ahem, Mr. Baker andMr. Thomas, please provide freesoda and a back massage foryour corner workers next event….)140 entries dropped to 134 by the start of theday, with 3 heats and 6 runs offered. The weatherwas too cool in the morning (flannel, anyone?),with a few ominous clouds that luckily swept past, but the sun kept hammering through, ending onsome golden sunshine and breezy conditions withtemps in the low 60’s.Photo: Eddie SavageSave Mailing CostSave Print ProductionSave $$ for NERif you wish, you can have the latest issueof Pit Talk sent to you as a pdf file andavoid the cost of mailing and printing. If you wish to help save for NER,please contact Paul Krysiack atpkrys0kb@snet.net As membershipchairperson, and membership listmanagement, Paul will omit you fromreceiving a print copy, and ensure youare listed for immediate distribution of aimmediate pdf file of the publication.Pro (ranked on Pax)had 10 drivers andthe Top Pro slotwent really to thelast run. Billy Davisran the family SolocarE-Stock MazdaMiata to a TopPax on a final run48.955, factoredto a 40.387. GrantReeve was shy onlyby 0.023, runninga 47.153 (40.410)with his SS classed,Chevrolet CorvetteZ06. Nate Whipplere-badged his SMIntegra Type-R as aMaserati to try toadd “accelerare” tothe runs, and tookthird on a 46.700(40.582). PJCorrales (SM) tookfourth, and Ben Wagstaff (STS), fifth. Josh “WatchCones Fly” Parker took FTD on a third run 46.575in the C-Mod Pro Reynard Formula Ford.As an electonic PDFsubscriber, you’ll bereceiving PIT TALK first,25 Novices were on hand, and I did see moreNovices taking Instructors than usual (this isgood). Rookie DNF’s and heavy coneage wereminimal, and what orange was not dodgedwas probably due to several sections that wouldrequire a degree of experience by the driver, which the Rookies just need to learn over “seattime.”Again, we learn by doing. Please use, orabuse as Jeff Anderson would say, our Instructors!James Daugherty took his STS Mazda Miatato the win on a fifth run 54.562 (44.904 Pax).Yavuz Kiremit scored another Top 10 finish asa Novice in his ES Miata, running a last run55.002 (45.376), four-tenths off. The Davisfamily Miata appeared in Novice with Pam Davisbehind the wheel for her second NER event andshe ran to a 57.509 (47.444) for fifth. With someencouragement from son Billy and spouse Bob, Ithink we can get her to successfully compete inPro before she realizes it...“Oh so close” of the Novice ranks was in tenthspot, where Tim Massey was 0.012 short ofninth with his FSP-classed Chevy Cobalt. Timothyran a last run 57.990 (48.421), against theslightly quicker 57.906 (48.409) of Cory vanWalkenstein and his STR Mazda Miata. PaulGillard returned to avenge the reputation of hisF-Stock Chevy Camaro SS. Paul ticked a lastrun 68.138 (56.350) after a few earlier runs ofnot-enough grip with tire smoke at the start andmissing a gate out on course a few times. Paulwill find he now has to live up to a fan base,as Hannah Cox of FJB deemed Paul’s Aqua BlueMetal Camaro her favorite car of the event.Novice saw the very-yellow (not quite asdistinctive as Brian “Free Candy” Levesque’s shirt)Spec Miata/CSP Mazda Miata by the fatherand son team of Bill and Matt Miskoe. With theyounger Miskoe named Isaac entered in FJB, NERsaw a 3-generation racing-family all competingon the same course the same day. By days’ end, young Isaac took both dad and grandfather totask, running a 64.599 in his kart, while theMiata fell to mechanical issues after just 2 runseach by Matt and Bill.Super Stock had 2 drivers: Russ Siggelkoe and hisLotus Elise vs. the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 of CarlHayn. Russ stood on a third run 48.817 to Carl’slast run 52.914. B-Stock had Barbara Seeger takea win in her Corvette from Jeff Martynuska on afinal pass 50.298. Robert Mills bested dad Chrison a 51.624 in C-Stock, and I’ll bet that was along, quiet ride home in the Toyota MR2 Spyder.E-Stock saw John W. England quicker than JohnE England on a Miata powered 51.347, and PhilGott took F-Stock in the Hemi Challenger on a58.087, only 0.442 quicker than Scott Monti andhis Hyundai Genesis Coupe.Chang Ho Kim took D-Stock in his Acura IntegraType-R by nearly a second. Perhaps lit by a fireas he trailed in an afternoon marque club sessionyesterday to co-driver Rachel Baker, Changnailed a 52.245 on his last run, needing that tospringboard past Rachel’s 53.073.Matt Murray blasted the 4-driver H-Stock classwith a 53.582, but the battle in the class wasreally second, where Dave Fried and his HondaCR-Z hybridized Jonathan Havener and hisToyota Corolla. David ran a 58.719 to Jonathan’s58.846, just a 0.127 difference on both driversfifth run. Most of the factory classes could havegone to anyone in the last runs, with the exceptionof maybe H-Stock.With the Dragon F1 getting re-winged, StaceyStrout used her Reynard to a lone-entry win inA-Mod on a 48.974, while brother Cliff Strouttook the Integra Type-R to a 49.211 in DSP. DavidGott (same car) was 0.109 back on a last run51.746 and Charlie Thompson third in his MINIJCW, also on a last run 51.975. Lawrence Coffinwith his MINI S netted sixth on a 55.642, andAaron Telage took his MINI S to within 0.006 ofLawrence on a third pass 55.648. Brian tookthird on a 51.442, and Mitchell“would have” been fourth had henot double-coned his best and lastrun of 51.567.Don Kuehl took SSM with a 49.976, but notablein SSM was Patrick Heck and his Lotus, whomentioned later he is pushing the limits more ofhis Elise and is enjoying the task of working outhis mistakes. Eric Krueger was a lone entry in KK,running to a 48.252 on his fifth run. Ian Kruegertook FJA on a 50.185, with Allison Kruegerstanding on a 58.707, and Evan Woodsom ona 60.409. Kimsoo Gopnik was a loneFJC entry, tripping a 78.136.I left mention of a story in F-Modified to endup, for a few reasons. The Junior Kart classesare at the same time Solo classes in their ownright, a mentoring program for young people tolearn quality aspects and responsibilities of life’sactivities, but it is also a development or “feederprogram” for Solo or other disciplines as adultdrivers. 2 examples come to light this month.— continued on page 2412 PIT TALKPIT TALK October/November 2011 13
