19UK. As such, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Department</strong> would have been unable to properly evaluate <strong>the</strong> impacts <strong>of</strong>its policies.51. As a result <strong>of</strong> our Report in 2008 on road safety, <strong>the</strong> UK Statistics Authority brought<strong>for</strong>ward its statutory independent assessment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Transport</strong>’s roadcasualty statistics. 84 We welcome <strong>the</strong> UK Statistics Authority's responsiveness in thisregard. <strong>The</strong> UK Statistics Authority made seven requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Department</strong>, to beimplemented by November 2009. In February, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Transport</strong> published asummary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> action it is taking to meet <strong>the</strong>se requirements. 85 We welcome <strong>the</strong>measures proposed by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Transport</strong> to improve <strong>the</strong> accuracy <strong>of</strong> roadcasualty statistics. We call on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Department</strong> to implement <strong>the</strong> actions fully and tomake use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wider sources <strong>of</strong> casualty data in future statements and reports.52. <strong>The</strong> UK Statistics Authority assessed <strong>the</strong> overall adequacy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>for</strong><strong>Transport</strong>’s casualty statistics. We invite <strong>the</strong> UK Statistics Authority to now undertakea specific investigation into <strong>the</strong> extent to which <strong>the</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Transport</strong> hassought an explanation <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> unexpected divergence between <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> peoplekilled and those seriously injured.6 Efficiency and resourcesEfficiency savings53.
