<strong>Fall</strong> <strong>2012</strong><strong>NCIDQ</strong> Examination Registration GuideEXAMINATION PROCEDURESAdmission to the Testing CenterWhen your <strong>reg</strong>istration is processed, you willreceive an email confirmation within 24 hours.Check the test location carefully, and call usimmediately if any in<strong>for</strong>mation is incorrect.Approximately two weeks be<strong>for</strong>e the exam,you will receive an email from our testprovider, ACT, with instructions on how toretrieve your admission letter online. Youmust print and bring this personalized admissionletter to the test center. Printers are notavailable onsite.Your admission letter will confirm your testinglocation and provide directions (if available)to the examination site. A printout ofyour admission letter and a current (nonexpired)ID with your signature and a photographof you (driver’s license or state ID card,passport, etc.) are required <strong>for</strong> entrance to theexamination. The name on your admissionletter must match the name on your ID.Important! If you have not received your admission letternotification within 10 days of the examination date,call <strong>NCIDQ</strong> at 202-721-0220.Seat and Room AssignmentsPlan to arrive at the examination center be<strong>for</strong>ethe reporting times noted in the examinationschedule. After the check-in and identificationprocess, you will receive a seat assignment.Some examination centers have seating inmore than one room. If you cannot hear thetest supervisor, feel that the lighting is inadequate,or have other problems with your seatand/or room assignment, please let the testsupervisor know immediately.As soon as everyone has verified their identificationand been seated, the test supervisorwill close the testing room door and begin theinstructions.Testing Instructions and Late ArrivalsYou must be present <strong>for</strong> instructions or youwill not be permitted to take the examination.If you arrive late, you will not be permittedinto the testing room and you will <strong>for</strong>feit yourexamination fees.Personal Electronic DevicesCell phones, pagers, PDAs and handhelds,digital cameras, music players and all otherpersonal electronic devices are not permittedin the testing room.Testing Environment<strong>NCIDQ</strong> makes every ef<strong>for</strong>t to ensure a quietand com<strong>for</strong>table testing environment <strong>for</strong> allcandidates. <strong>Fall</strong> <strong>2012</strong><strong>NCIDQ</strong> Examination Registration GuideEXAMINATION SCAN SHEETS ANDPROBLEM BOOKLETSYou are responsible <strong>for</strong> clearly and correctlycompleting your scan materials during theexamination. <strong>NCIDQ</strong> cannot accept responsibility<strong>for</strong> reporting scores on examinationswith improperly completed scan materials.Such tests will not be scored.Please be careful and thorough in completingall scan materials. A #2 (HB) pencil must beused <strong>for</strong> all scan materials. A mechanical pencilmay be used if it contains HB lead.At the conclusion of each exam section, youmust return the examination booklet alongwith all other examination materials, includingall scrap and tracing papers, etc. Failure tocomply will result in disqualification of yourexamination score on that section.No examination materials will be returned.Examination materials are stored by <strong>NCIDQ</strong><strong>for</strong> three years.CANDIDATE COMMENTS ANDEXAMINATION CONDITION CONCERNS<strong>NCIDQ</strong> encourages feedback about the examinationexperience from all candidates. Yourtest supervisor will have Candidate CommentForms available <strong>for</strong> you to report any comments.This feedback is reviewed by our testingconsultants and <strong>NCIDQ</strong> staff but does notresult in a written response from <strong>NCIDQ</strong>.If you feel that the testing procedures or environmentseriously affected your per<strong>for</strong>mance,do not wait until you receive your test resultsto express your concerns. A candidate comment<strong>for</strong>m is not sufficient <strong>for</strong> <strong>NCIDQ</strong> toopen an investigation of your case.In order <strong>for</strong> <strong>NCIDQ</strong> staff to investigate anyexamination administration problems, wemust receive a written letter from you by 5p.m. Eastern time on October 15. If <strong>NCIDQ</strong>determines your case to be warranted, youmay be permitted to retake the section(s) atno cost.Exam condition concerns must be made inwriting and sent to <strong>NCIDQ</strong>. We do not acceptthese concerns sent by e-mail or fax.EXAMINATION FORMATThe examination reflects the content of<strong>NCIDQ</strong>’s revised Practice Analysis Study <strong>for</strong>the Profession of <strong>Interior</strong> Design, released inNovember 2008.The examination includes both Imperial andSI Metric Units (Système International d'Unités)as well as references to both UnitedStates and Canadian standards or terms.Unless referring to an established code ordrafting standard, metric units are approximateand have been rounded <strong>for</strong> simplicityand clarity. No conversions are required fromone scale to the other. Such conversions mayresult in an incorrect answer.Section 1: Codes, Building Systems, ConstructionStandards & Contract AdministrationSection 1 consists of 150 multiple-choicequestions and is administered in 3.5 hours.This section includes 25 experimental questionsthat will not be used to determine yourscore (this allows <strong>NCIDQ</strong> to pre-test questionsprior to including them as scored questionsin future examinations). All candidates<strong>for</strong> a given test date will receive the sameexercises. All design solutions must addressthe principles of accessible design.All project descriptions, project code requirements,project design requirements and thelist of drawings will be provided in an examinationbooklet. Separate envelopes will beprovided <strong>for</strong> each part of the examination.Enter your control number (printed on youradmission letter) in the proper boxes on eachof the sheets contained in the envelopes.You may draft or sketch your solution; however,it must be clearly understandable anddrawn to scale. Do not waste time on highlyrefined drafting. Solving the problems andeffectively communicating your solutions areessential.All solutions must be presented on the sheetsprovided. Any in<strong>for</strong>mation on tracing papertaped to the drawing sheets will be removedbe<strong>for</strong>e grading and will not be scored.Drawing scales will vary according to theproject size and amount of detail required tobe shown. Space Planning, Lighting Design,Restroom [Washroom] and Millwork planswill be at 1/4" scale [1:50]; Egress, Life Safetyand Systems Integration plans will be at1/8" scale [1:100]; Millwork elevations andsections will be at 3/4" scale [1:20].Click these links to see descriptions <strong>for</strong> eachexercise and the codes used in Section 3 onthe <strong>NCIDQ</strong> Web site.There is comprehensive in<strong>for</strong>mation aboutthe grading process on our Web site.EXAMINATION RESULTSResults are mailed within 14 weeks of theexamination administration. Scores <strong>for</strong> Sections1 and 2 will be reported on a scale rangingfrom 200 to 800, with the passing pointanchored at 500. Scores <strong>for</strong> Section 3 will bereported as pass/fail.You must pass all three sections of the<strong>NCIDQ</strong> Examination to earn the Certificate.The passing point indicating entry-level competenceis carefully set to ensure consistentand accurate results from one examinationperiod to the next. However, passing scoresare calculated <strong>for</strong> each exam administration;there is no set number or percentage of correctanswers required <strong>for</strong> a passing score.Reported pass/fail rates reflect only the rates<strong>for</strong> a particular exam; pass/fail rates are notpredetermined and do not affect the passingscore.AppealsScores cannot be changed, and failing scoresare never changed to passing. Simple failureof a section will not be considered grounds<strong>for</strong> appealing your score. All concerns <strong>reg</strong>ardingexam conditions must be addressed byOctober 15, <strong>2012</strong>, and not after scores havebeen released. See the Candidate Commentsand Examination Conditions Concerns sectionon page 10 <strong>for</strong> additional in<strong>for</strong>mation.A NOTE ABOUTSCORESScores on credentiallingexaminationssuch as the <strong>NCIDQ</strong>Exam are not like thegrades you received ontests in college.The <strong>NCIDQ</strong> Exam doesnot test comprehensiverecall of knowledge;rather it isdesigned to assessyour entry-level competenceto protect thepublic. Your scores will be provided well aheadof the <strong>reg</strong>istration deadline <strong>for</strong> the next exam.Important! Candidates must pass all sections of theexamination within a five-year period or retest.If you started taking the exam in 2009 or earlier,you must complete all sections by theend of 2014. At that time, any scores morethan five years old will be voided, and youmust retake those sections.If you started taking the exam in 2010 orlater, you must complete all sections withinfive years. Scores more than five years oldwill be voided, and you must retake thosesections.Some state/provincial boards (includingTBAE and the Association of Registered <strong>Interior</strong>Designers of Ontario [ARIDO]) mayimpose their own time limit.THE <strong>NCIDQ</strong> CERTIFICATEIf you applied directly to <strong>NCIDQ</strong> to take theexamination and pass all three sections, youwill receive an <strong>NCIDQ</strong> Certificate and walletcard.Keeping your Certificateactive enablesyou to receive additionalbenefits such asonline verification ofyour credential, freetracking of your continuing education activity,the ability to participate as an <strong>NCIDQ</strong> volunteerand more. Your first year is free, courtesyof <strong>NCIDQ</strong>.Please ensure your My<strong>NCIDQ</strong> account is upto date with the correct contact in<strong>for</strong>mation,especially the full spelling of your name asyou would like it to appear on your <strong>NCIDQ</strong>Certificate.If you applied to TBAE or another state orprovincial agency, you must complete the<strong>NCIDQ</strong> application process in order toreceive a Certificate. Most of the content of the<strong>NCIDQ</strong> Examination pertains to a commonbody of knowledge that is generic to the practiceof interior design.The best way to ensure a successful per<strong>for</strong>manceis to gain well rounded experience. It iswise to supplement your education and experienceby reviewing interior design resources—particularly those focusing on areas in whichyou may be less skilled or experienced.Read some prep tips on our web site.You will find that the <strong>NCIDQ</strong> web site canbe an extremely valuable resource. The <strong>NCIDQ</strong> Exam is Changing in 2013Know how these changes affect you!123You can take one section of the exam be<strong>for</strong>e you have completed your work experience.This is a change to <strong>NCIDQ</strong> eligibility. Anyone who meets one of the current <strong>NCIDQ</strong> educational routes can take asection of the exam anytime after graduation--<strong>reg</strong>ardless of how much work experience they have.The exam content has been restructured so that this section of the exam focuses on the type of knowledge you gainin school, such as design theory, research, design communications programming and sustainability. After you havecompleted your work experience, you can take the sections that focus on day-to-day work experience.There will be new multiple-choice sections with a different focus on content.The current multiple choice sections (Section 1 Codes, Building Systems, Construction Standards and ContractAdministration and Section 2 Design Application, Project Coordination and Professional Practice) will nolonger be given after 2013.Starting in 2013, there will be two new multiple-choice sections:<strong>Interior</strong> Design Fundamentals Exam (IDFX) available to those who meet <strong>NCIDQ</strong>’s educationrequirement, <strong>reg</strong>ardless of their work experience.<strong>Interior</strong> Design Professional Exam (IDPX) available to those who have completed their work experience.You must pass BOTH the current paper-and-pencil multiple-choice sections by theend of 2013 or you will lose credit <strong>for</strong> the one you have already passed.There is a one-year transition period <strong>for</strong> anyone taking the current Section 1 and Section 2 exams.Whether you are taking the exam <strong>for</strong> the first time or whether you are retaking Section 1 and/or 2, if you take the currentSection 1 or Section 2, you must pass both sections by the end of next year.2013Paper-and-PencilMultiple-Choice ExamDatesFriday, April 5Friday, October 4That means, you have three administrations left to pass both sections. If you have not passedthem both by the end of 2013, your passing score will be voided and you will have to retake bothsections in order to earn the <strong>NCIDQ</strong> Certificate. There will be no exceptions or extensions becausethese exams are being completely phased out because...HERE’S THE BIG NEWS!Starting in 2013, the new multiple-choice sections will be delivered on computer!4However...The new multiple-choice sections will be entirely computer-delivered beginning in 2013 at a network of testinglocations across North America. You’ll have more choices of dates and times and locations. While we don’t haveall the details to release, we can tell you that these two computer-based sections will not be administered on thesame weekend as the Practicum (Section 3) next year.We will administer both current paper-and-pencil mutiple-choice exams in their same <strong>for</strong>mat with the same nameand same content through the end of 2013 as well as the new computer-delivered multiple-choice exams with thenew names and shifted content. The paper-and-pencil versions will continue to be given the day be<strong>for</strong>e thepracticum, as they always have.You must pass BOTH sections in either the written or computer-delivered <strong>for</strong>mat.
