Wilder to Become New Admissions DeanDr. Aldridge “Al” D. WilderJr., a <strong>UNC</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>faculty member since 1976, hasbeen named the <strong>School</strong>’s newassistant dean for admissions andstudent affairs.His appointment will becomeeffective July 1, <strong>2009</strong>, whenDr. Albert D. Guckes returns toteaching, research and patientcare. Guckes has served as assistantdean within the Office <strong>of</strong>Academic Affairs since 2003.“I would like to thank Dr.Guckes for his attentiveness toour students’ accomplishmentsand concerns,” said Dr. JanetGuthmiller, associate dean foracademic affairs.Wilder’s responsibilities willfocus on the DDS admissionsprocess. He will provide additionalleadership in the areas <strong>of</strong> DDSrecruitment, admissions, enrollment,matriculation, graduationand student welfare. Wilder alsowill assist Guthmiller in the<strong>School</strong>’s ongoing DDS curriculumreview efforts.In the monthsbefore Wilder <strong>of</strong>ficiallybegins his workas assistant dean, heis transitioning intohis new role by workingwith Guckes andWilderother colleagues within the Office<strong>of</strong> Academic Affairs, Guthmillersaid.Wilder, a pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the<strong>School</strong>’s Department <strong>of</strong> Operative<strong>Dentistry</strong>, received his DDSdegree from <strong>UNC</strong> in 1973. Heentered private general practicethat year, but returned to the<strong>School</strong> in 1976 as an assistantpr<strong>of</strong>essor in operative dentistry.He was promoted to associatepr<strong>of</strong>essor in 1982 and to fullpr<strong>of</strong>essor in 2000. Since 1983, hehas directed the clinical researchprogram in operative dentistry.For the past seven years, he hasdirected the preclinical course inoperative dentistry, “ConservativeOperative <strong>Dentistry</strong>.”His honors include certificates<strong>of</strong> appreciation from eightfirst-year DDS classes – includingeach class from 2002 through2008. He also received a 2007-2008 Dean’s Excellence inTeaching Award. Guthmiller saidthat Wilder is highly devoted toworking with DDS students andthat his new role would extendthat responsiveness to prospectivedental students.“Dr. Wilder will bring to thisposition his commitment andcompassion for the <strong>UNC</strong> <strong>School</strong><strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>. He is highly devotedto working with students. A1978 recipient <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Dentistry</strong> Community MentorTeaching Award, he was a member<strong>of</strong> the inaugural <strong>UNC</strong> FacultyEngaged Scholars Program <strong>of</strong> theCarolina Center for Public Servicein 2008.His research has focused onthe social impacts <strong>of</strong> chronichealth problems, particularlydental conditions, crani<strong>of</strong>acialanomalies and HIV/AIDS.Dental alumni provide for theDr. Ronald P.
