Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong> Endowment to Support Graduate Education<strong>The</strong> Phillip Caldwell and JohnChristensen Graduate FellowshipFund within the <strong>UNC</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Dentistry</strong> is now an endowment,<strong>of</strong>ficials from the Department<strong>of</strong> Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong> and the<strong>North</strong> Carolina Academy <strong>of</strong>Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong> announced atan early October 2008 reception.<strong>The</strong> fund became endowedat the $100,000 level and willprovide support for graduateeducation for future pediatricdentists, said Dr. J. TimothyWright, department chair and Dr.James W. Bawden distinguishedpr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> pediatric dentistry.Drs. Robert Moran andRichard Brooks, <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Dentistry</strong> classmates and DDSgraduates <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong>, establishedthe fellowship fund tohonor the teaching excellence <strong>of</strong>Caldwell and Christensen, both<strong>of</strong> whom have educated hundreds<strong>of</strong> students and residents at the<strong>School</strong>. Moran and Brooks havea private practice in Cary.More than 35 individualscontributed to the fellowshipfund honoring Caldwell andChristensen.Both honorees are graduates<strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>’sgraduate program in pediatricdentistry. Christensen alsocompleted the <strong>School</strong>’s graduateprogram in orthodontics.Caldwell has practiced pediatricdentistry in Fayetteville since1974, and Christensen haspracticed both pediatric dentistryand orthodontics in Durhamsince 1986.“<strong>The</strong>y have imparted theirwarm interpersonal approach toteaching and their highly effectiveeducational styles to help preparestudents to provide excellent oralhealth care to children for over 20years,” said Wright.Dean John N. Williams, thehonorees and their family members,fund contributors, Moran,Brooks, Wright and members <strong>of</strong>the Department <strong>of</strong> Pediatric<strong>Dentistry</strong> attended the reception.Drs. John Christensen, left, and Phillip CaldwellKelly Almond, who was named executive director <strong>of</strong> the <strong>UNC</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Dentistry</strong>’s Dental Alumni Association in 2004, left the <strong>School</strong> in August 2008 tobecome assistant director <strong>of</strong> development for the <strong>University</strong>’s Morehead-CainFoundation.This foundation administers the Morehead-Cain Scholarship, a full,four-year merit award that includes four summer enrichment experiences and alaptop computer for each recipient.A drop-in reception was held for Almond,pictured here with Vice Dean Ken May, at the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong> to thank herfor her many accomplishments. She joined the <strong>School</strong> in 2001.Please Save the Date‘Decisions about Dental<strong>School</strong>’ Luncheon<strong>The</strong> <strong>UNC</strong> Dental AlumniAssociation is pleased to sponsorthe Decisions About Dental <strong>School</strong>(DDS) Luncheon, where <strong>School</strong><strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficials will <strong>of</strong>fer informationon dentistry as a career.<strong>The</strong> April 24, <strong>2009</strong>, event is opento all dentists in the state and theirdesignated family members or otherguests who are interested in dentistry.<strong>The</strong> luncheon will begin at 11 a.m.and will include presentations aboutthe <strong>UNC</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>, aswell as admission, application andfinancial aid processes.
