A RockyMount native, Dr. Crumplergraduated from UNC in 1964and went on to earn his DDSdegree. He practiced generaldentistry in Rocky Mount forseven years before joining theU.S. Army Dental Corps in 1975.He retired from the Army in1994. Dr. Crumpler was marriedto Velma J. Crumpler and hadtwo sons, David C. Crumpler andWyatt L. Crumpler, and threegrandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.Dr. Crumpler wasa lifetime member of the UNCDental Alumni Association.Clyde N. McCall, DDS ’54, ofBlowing Rock, passed away Feb.18, 2008. In 1950, Dr. McCallgraduated from Berea College inBerea, Ky., and he went on tograduate as a part of the UNCSchool of Dentistry’s first DDSclass. His father, Charles S.McCall, DDS, inspired all fourof his sons and two grandsonsto follow in his footsteps andbecome dentists. Dr. McCallMay 2008 marked the 50th anniversary of the UNC School of Dentistry’s first graduating classin dental assisting.The UNC Dental Assisting Alumni Association celebrated the occasion witha luncheon in the School’s alumni garden.Those attending enjoyed a continuing educationprogram prior to lunch, and new officers for the association were elected at a brief businessmeeting. Charyl Allison, Class of 1981, was elected president. Naza Ramirez-Guerra, Class of2002, was elected treasurer. In the front row, left to right, are:Tara Copeland, Class of 2007;Jennifer Kruszewski, Class of 2007; Ethel Campbell, Dental Assisting Program director;AmyNguyen, Dental Assisting faculty member; and Jeanette Merritt, Class of 1995. In the secondrow, left to right, are: Reggie Cook, Class of 1997; Marsha Black, Class of 1998; Lynn Smith,Dental Assisting faculty member and Class of 1977; Charyl Allison; and Naza Ramirez-Guerra.In the top row, left to right, are Kim Baines, Class of 1986; Sara Massey, Class of 2007; andKaren Bullock, Class of 1984.practiced general dentistry in thetown of Stanley for 41 years. Hecontributed generously to thecommunity through his profession,his church and numerouscivic projects. He was marriedto Joan Evans McCall and hadone daughter, Leslie McCall.Dr. McCall retired from dentistryin 1998 and, with his wife,moved to Blowing Rock, wherehe enjoyed taking nature photographyand hiking mountain trails.Dorothy Herring Rodgers, DH’55, of Statesville, passed awayJuly 28, 2008. Mrs. Rodgersgraduated in the first UNCdental hygiene class and practiceddental hygiene in Statesvillefor 30 years. She worked forDr. W.C. Current, Dr. DonaldCheek and her husband, Dr.James F. Rodgers, who graduatedin the DDS Class of ’56. Mrs.Rodgers also served a year as aninstructor of dental hygiene andhad been a past member of theAmerican Dental Hygienists’Association. She also was interestedin music, with membership inthe MacDowell Music Club andformer membership in herchurch choir. Survivors includeher husband; her son, JohnHerring Rodgers; two granddaughtersand a grandson.Ludwig Gaston Scott, DDS ’54,of Burlington, passed awayJuly 26, 2008. Dr. Scott was amember of the UNC Schoolof Dentistry’s first DDS class.A retired dentist, he had spentmany years as an adjunct facultymember at the School ofDentistry. He was a memberof the North Carolina DentalSociety and attended theannual meetings until his healthprevented him from continuing.He also served in the U.S. Navyduring World War II. Dr. Scott’ssurvivors include his sons, MackL. Scott and Dr. Fred D. Scott;his daughters, Kathryn ScottMitchell and Dawn Scott-Raxter;and three grandchildren.38
Pediatric Dentistry Endowment to Support Graduate EducationThe Phillip Caldwell and JohnChristensen Graduate FellowshipFund within the UNC School ofDentistry is now an endowment,officials from the Departmentof Pediatric Dentistry and theNorth Carolina Academy ofPediatric Dentistry announced atan early October 2008 reception.The fund became endowedat the $100,000 level and willprovide support for graduateeducation for future pediatricdentists, said Dr. J. TimothyWright, department chair and Dr.James W. Bawden distinguishedprofessor of pediatric dentistry.Drs. Robert Moran andRichard Brooks, School ofDentistry classmates and DDSgraduates of the School, establishedthe fellowship fund tohonor the teaching excellence ofCaldwell and Christensen, bothof whom have educated hundredsof students and residents at theSchool. Moran and Brooks havea private practice in Cary.More than 35 individualscontributed to the fellowshipfund honoring Caldwell andChristensen.Both honorees are graduatesof the School of Dentistry’sgraduate program in pediatricdentistry. Christensen alsocompleted the School’s graduateprogram in orthodontics.Caldwell has practiced pediatricdentistry in Fayetteville since1974, and Christensen haspracticed both pediatric dentistryand orthodontics in Durhamsince 1986.“They have imparted theirwarm interpersonal approach toteaching and their highly effectiveeducational styles to help preparestudents to provide excellent oralhealth care to children for over 20years,” said Wright.Dean John N. Williams, thehonorees and their family members,fund contributors, Moran,Brooks, Wright and members ofthe Department of PediatricDentistry attended the reception.Drs. John Christensen, left, and Phillip CaldwellKelly Almond, who was named executive director of the UNC School ofDentistry’s Dental Alumni Association in 2004, left the School in August 2008 tobecome assistant director of development for the University’s Morehead-CainFoundation.This foundation administers the Morehead-Cain Scholarship, a full,four-year merit award that includes four summer enrichment experiences and alaptop computer for each recipient.A drop-in reception was held for Almond,pictured here with Vice Dean Ken May, at the School of Dentistry to thank herfor her many accomplishments.
