The First ThanksgivingIn the year 1620, the Pilgrims sailed from England to look for theNew World on a ship called the Mayflower. Their voyage took 65days.

The Pilgrims landed near Plymouth Rock and started to buildhomes. The first winter there wasn't enough food for everyone, somany people died.In the spring of 1621, The Pilgrims became friends with theWampanoag tribe of Native Americans.

The Wampanoag helped the Pilgrims learn how to hunt better andhow to plant crops, including corn. The fall harvest was so good in 1621 and the Pilgrims were sothankful that they invited their native American Friends to a feast.

The first Thanksgiving feast lasted for 3 days. Thanksgiving iscelebrated on the fourth Thursday of November as a nationalholiday. On Thanksgiving we remember the Pilgrims and theIndians who helped them.Thanksgiving today is still a day to be thankful for family, friendsand good food.
