Dr. David W. Starch & Dr. Brian<br />
W. Stigall<br />
Team Physicians<br />
Dr. David W. Starch and Dr. Brian W. Stigall joined the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong><br />
athletics department as team physicians in 2003. Both doctors assist in the<br />
general medical care of all <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong> student athletes.<br />
Starch, an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician, is<br />
Dr. Starch employed with the New Braunfels Bone and Joint Clinic. He serves as <strong>Texas</strong><br />
<strong>Lutheran</strong>’s lead team physician and chief orthopedist in dealing with the<br />
various injuries that affect athletes’ muscles, bones,<br />
joints and connective tissues.<br />
Stigall is a family medicine and sports medicine physician in private<br />
practice in New Braunfels. Stigall assists Starch in the treatment of<br />
orthopedic injuries and provides general medical care for the student<br />
athletes.<br />
Starch and his wife Katherine have three children: daughter Peighton, son<br />
Coleman and daughter Presley. Stigall attended medical school at The<br />
University of <strong>Texas</strong> Health Science Center in San Antonio, and he completed<br />
Dr. Stigall his residency at Scott and White Memorial Hospital and Clinic in Temple,<br />
<strong>Texas</strong>.<br />
Stigall served as a sports medicine fellow at The University of <strong>Texas</strong><br />
Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and worked as a family medicine and sports medicine<br />
physician in the Schertz area. He has been in private practice in New Braunfels since 2001. Stigall<br />
and his wife Reneé have three children: daughter Sydney and sons Jack and John.<br />
Brian Coulombe<br />
Director of Athletic Training Education<br />
Program<br />
Brian Coulombe, a native of Shingle Springs, Calif., is in his 10th season<br />
with <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong> and last year took a new position – director of TLU’s<br />
Athletic Training Education Program – a position he will again occupy for<br />
2008-09. Coulombe leads the certified program that educates all TLU<br />
athletic training majors.<br />
In 2002, Coulombe was named the head athletic trainer and directed the student athletic<br />
trainers and coordinated with the TLU coaches and student-athletes in the treatment and<br />
prevention of injuries.<br />
A master’s degree recipient in athletic training from the University of West Virginia,<br />
Coulombe has faculty status in the TLU kinesiology department. He received his undergraduate<br />
degree in physical education from California State University-<br />
Sacramento.<br />
During his graduate work at West Virginia, Coulombe worked with the Mountaineer men’s<br />
soccer team and taught introduction to athletic training.<br />
Coulombe and his wife, Amy, live in New Braunfels. The Coulombes have two sons,<br />
Benjamin and Paul.<br />
Tim Kent<br />
Head Athletic Trainer<br />
Tim Kent returned to his alma mater in 2008 as the head athletic trainer<br />
for <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong>. Kent, a master’s degree graduate of the University of<br />
West Virginia, spent two years at Hardin-Simmons University as an assistant<br />
athletic trainer before returning to be with the Bulldogs.<br />
Kent took over the head athletic training position after Brian Coulombe<br />
moved to fill TLU’s position as director of the Athletic Training Education<br />
Program.<br />
While completing his undergraduate work at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong>, Kent spent all four years in the<br />
TLU Athletic Training Education Program. He was an athletic training major.<br />
Kent enjoys playing all sports, particularly basketball, in his spare time.<br />
Kent is married to the former Sarah Dickie. Tim and Sarah were married on Jan. 3, <strong>2009</strong>. Tim<br />
is the son of Eldon and Martha Kent of San Antonio.<br />
Matt Matocha<br />
Assistant Athletic Trainer<br />
<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong> graduate Matt Matocha returns this year to his alma<br />
mater as the assistant athletic trainer for the Bulldogs. Matocha, a 2004<br />
graduate of TLU, comes back to Seguin after serving Concordia University<br />
<strong>Texas</strong> from 2006 to <strong>2009</strong> as the head athletic trainer.<br />
Matocha has a bachelor’s of arts degree from TLU and a master’s of<br />
science degree from Indiana State in 2005.<br />
Matocha and his wife Monica, a 2005 graduate of TLU, live in Cedar Park, <strong>Texas</strong>. Monica<br />
works as the assistant athletic trainer at Westwood High School.<br />
Matocha is the son of Barney and Leah Matocha. Matt has a brother Scott, who played<br />
baseball for the Bulldogs and graduated in 2007. Matt also has a sister Amanda, who is a<br />
sophomore currently at TLU.<br />
Crystal Standard<br />
Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer<br />
Crystal Standard joined the TLU Athletic Training staff in the spring of<br />
<strong>2009</strong>, and she returns for the full academic and athletics years in <strong>2009</strong>-10.<br />
Standard is a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the Bulldogs.<br />
Standard has a bachelor’s of behavioral science from Hardin-Simmons.<br />
She is currently enrolled at <strong>Texas</strong> State University in San Marcos in pursuit<br />
of her master’s of science in athletic training.<br />
Crystal is the daughter of David and Lucy Standard. She has a brother, Joshua<br />
Amy Menzies<br />
Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer<br />
Amy Menzies joins the TLU Athletic Training staff as a graduate assistant<br />
athletic trainer for the <strong>2009</strong>-10 season. Menzies is a native of Willoughby,<br />
Ohio.<br />
Menzies completed her bachelor’s of science degree at the University of<br />
Toledo. She is pursuing her master’s of science in athletic training at <strong>Texas</strong><br />
State University in San Marcos.<br />
Amy is the daughter of Janet and Donald Menzies. She has a sister, Julie.<br />
Tim Clark<br />
Director of Sports Information<br />
Tim Clark starts his 12th year as the university’s director of sports<br />
information and sports marketing. Clark works with all 14 TLU sports,<br />
assisting in game-day operations and management of press boxes at all home<br />
sporting events. Clark also handles the TLU <strong>Athletics</strong> web site, coordinates<br />
the production of the university’s media guides (going paperless in <strong>2009</strong>-10)<br />
and produces all game programs. He also coordinates the video and audio<br />
productions of university sporting events.<br />
Clark and Patrick Zarate were honored in August <strong>2009</strong> as the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong> Office of Sports<br />
Information was named the Sports Information Office of the Year in the American Southwest<br />
Conference.<br />
Clark, Zarate and Jason Cade were honored in the 2005-06 Sports Information Directors’<br />
Publications Contest when the 2005 football guide was named the fourth-best football guide in<br />
Division C.<br />
The 2005 football guide cover was the national winner in Division C for “Best Cover.”<br />
Clark has won five NAIA Sports Information Directors Association awards for sports<br />
publications, including a runner-up finish for the 1999 football guide in the NAIA Sports<br />
Information Directors Publications Contest. The 2000 and 2003 football guides, along with the<br />
2005 football guide, placed in the Top 10 in the CoSIDA Publications Contest for Division C.<br />
Clark is a member of the College Sports Information Directors Association and serves as the<br />
District VI coordinator for men’s soccer and baseball in the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-<br />
America program. He was the chair of the American Southwest Conference Sports Information<br />
Directors for the 2005-06 athletics seasons.<br />
Clark has completed two Dallas White Rock marathons and has twice raced in the <strong>Texas</strong><br />
Water Safari boat race.<br />
Clark and his wife Rebecca live in Seguin with their daughters Madison and Maya and family<br />
pets Jewelsie, Joe, and Rash.<br />
Patrick Zarate<br />
Assistant Director of Sports Information<br />
Patrick Zarate is in his seventh year as the assistant sports information<br />
director. He also serves TLU as the head coach for women’s cross country<br />
and women’s track and field. Zarate assists the TLU Office of Sports<br />
Information in photography, game-day operations, media guide preparation<br />
and web site updates.<br />
In his work with the cross country and track and field teams, Zarate has<br />
been a part of two NCAA Division III National Championships in relays. Zarate coached the<br />
2007 women’s 4x400 meters indoor relay team to the first national title in DIII in school history.<br />
And in 2008, Zarate helped the 2008 women’s 4x100 meters outdoor relay to the second DIII<br />
national title in TLU school history.<br />
Zarate has also been influential in TLU’s NCAA Division III national runner-up finish in the<br />
2008 women’s 4x400 meters outdoor relay and in the three NCAA Division III national thirdplace<br />
finishes: the 2007 women’s 4x100 meters outdoor relay, the 2008 women’s 4x400 meters<br />
indoor relay, and Staci Jackson’s <strong>2009</strong> third-place finish in the 400 meters (the highest individual<br />
finish in TLU’s DIII track and field history).<br />
For his success at the national level, Zarate was the named the 2008 NCAA Division III<br />
National Outdoor Coach of the Year for Women’s Track & Field.<br />
Zarate and his wife Nichole were married June 4, 2005, in San Antonio. Nichole is pursuing<br />
her doctoral degree in psychology. Patrick and Nichole each graduated from <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong>.<br />
Patrick graduated in 2003, and Nichole received her degree in 2002. Patrick’s twin brother<br />
Gregory, and his wife Molly, also attended <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong>.<br />
Patrick enjoys running, all sporting activities and watching Houston-area sports teams<br />
do well.<br />
Judy Johnson<br />
<strong>Athletics</strong> Department Administrative<br />
Assistant<br />
Judy Johnson is in her 20th year at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong>. She is in her 19th<br />
year as the athletics department administrative assistant.<br />
Judy and her husband Jim have been married for 42 years. Judy, Jim and<br />
daughter Trina are all graduates of <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong>. Jim works on the staff at<br />
Emanuel’s <strong>Lutheran</strong> Church in Seguin.<br />
The Johnsons have two children – Trina and Jamey – and two grandchildren – Heidi and<br />
Braden.<br />
Carl Vann<br />
Custodian<br />
Carl Vann is in his 18th year with <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong> University. Carl is the<br />
custodian for the Jones Athletic Complex and the Marvin Rinn Field House.<br />
Carl has been honored for his dedication to the TLU <strong>Athletics</strong><br />
Department. He has been named a TLU Honorary Coach and was awarded<br />
the TLU Staffperson of the Year Award.<br />
Carl, a lifelong resident of Seguin, has three children: John, Kenneth and<br />
Tavara.<br />
Drew Engelke<br />
Photographer<br />
Drew Engelke has assisted the TLU <strong>Athletics</strong> Department with its<br />
photography needs for six years. Engelke has served as the official<br />
photographer at most TLU sporting events and all of the university’s Front<br />
Row events – the annual fundraisers for TLU <strong>Athletics</strong>.<br />
In 2008, Engelke was honored for his official and volunteer work at TLU.<br />
He was inducted into the TLU <strong>Athletics</strong> Wall of Honor.<br />
Engelke has provided the major artwork for TLU media guides over the past six years, and he<br />
is the regular photographer for each team’s picture day.<br />
Engelke has also been supportive of TLU <strong>Athletics</strong> in other ways. He was instrumental in the<br />
Seguin Volleyball Association’s donation of funds for the new sound system in Tostengard<br />
Activity Center (the volleyball venue on the TLU campus). Engelke and the Seguin Volleyball<br />
Association also donated new American flags for Tostengard Activity Center and for Memorial<br />
Gymnasium.<br />
