Dr. David W. Starch & Dr. Brian
W. Stigall
Team Physicians
Dr. David W. Starch and Dr. Brian W. Stigall joined the Texas Lutheran
athletics department as team physicians in 2003. Both doctors assist in the
general medical care of all Texas Lutheran student athletes.
Starch, an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician, is
Dr. Starch employed with the New Braunfels Bone and Joint Clinic. He serves as Texas
Lutheran’s lead team physician and chief orthopedist in dealing with the
various injuries that affect athletes’ muscles, bones,
joints and connective tissues.
Stigall is a family medicine and sports medicine physician in private
practice in New Braunfels. Stigall assists Starch in the treatment of
orthopedic injuries and provides general medical care for the student
athletes.
Starch and his wife Katherine have three children: daughter Peighton, son
Coleman and daughter Presley. Stigall attended medical school at The
University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, and he completed
Dr. Stigall his residency at Scott and White Memorial Hospital and Clinic in Temple,
Texas.
Stigall served as a sports medicine fellow at The University of Texas
Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and worked as a family medicine and sports medicine
physician in the Schertz area. He has been in private practice in New Braunfels since 2001. Stigall
and his wife Reneé have three children: daughter Sydney and sons Jack and John.
Brian Coulombe
Director of Athletic Training Education
Program
Brian Coulombe, a native of Shingle Springs, Calif., is in his 10th season
with Texas Lutheran and last year took a new position – director of TLU’s
Athletic Training Education Program – a position he will again occupy for
2008-09. Coulombe leads the certified program that educates all TLU
athletic training majors.
In 2002, Coulombe was named the head athletic trainer and directed the student athletic
trainers and coordinated with the TLU coaches and student-athletes in the treatment and
prevention of injuries.
A master’s degree recipient in athletic training from the University of West Virginia,
Coulombe has faculty status in the TLU kinesiology department. He received his undergraduate
degree in physical education from California State University-
Sacramento.
During his graduate work at West Virginia, Coulombe worked with the Mountaineer men’s
soccer team and taught introduction to athletic training.
Coulombe and his wife, Amy, live in New Braunfels. The Coulombes have two sons,
Benjamin and Paul.
Tim Kent
Head Athletic Trainer
Tim Kent returned to his alma mater in 2008 as the head athletic trainer
for Texas Lutheran. Kent, a master’s degree graduate of the University of
West Virginia, spent two years at Hardin-Simmons University as an assistant
athletic trainer before returning to be with the Bulldogs.
Kent took over the head athletic training position after Brian Coulombe
moved to fill TLU’s position as director of the Athletic Training Education
Program.
While completing his undergraduate work at Texas Lutheran, Kent spent all four years in the
TLU Athletic Training Education Program. He was an athletic training major.
Kent enjoys playing all sports, particularly basketball, in his spare time.
Kent is married to the former Sarah Dickie. Tim and Sarah were married on Jan. 3, 2009. Tim
is the son of Eldon and Martha Kent of San Antonio.
Matt Matocha
Assistant Athletic Trainer
Texas Lutheran graduate Matt Matocha returns this year to his alma
mater as the assistant athletic trainer for the Bulldogs. Matocha, a 2004
graduate of TLU, comes back to Seguin after serving Concordia University
Texas from 2006 to 2009 as the head athletic trainer.
Matocha has a bachelor’s of arts degree from TLU and a master’s of
science degree from Indiana State in 2005.
Matocha and his wife Monica, a 2005 graduate of TLU, live in Cedar Park, Texas. Monica
works as the assistant athletic trainer at Westwood High School.
Matocha is the son of Barney and Leah Matocha. Matt has a brother Scott, who played
baseball for the Bulldogs and graduated in 2007. Matt also has a sister Amanda, who is a
sophomore currently at TLU.
Crystal Standard
Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer
Crystal Standard joined the TLU Athletic Training staff in the spring of
2009, and she returns for the full academic and athletics years in 2009-10.
Standard is a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the Bulldogs.
Standard has a bachelor’s of behavioral science from Hardin-Simmons.
She is currently enrolled at Texas State University in San Marcos in pursuit
of her master’s of science in athletic training.
Crystal is the daughter of David and Lucy Standard. She has a brother, Joshua
Amy Menzies
Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer
Amy Menzies joins the TLU Athletic Training staff as a graduate assistant
athletic trainer for the 2009-10 season. Menzies is a native of Willoughby,
Ohio.
Menzies completed her bachelor’s of science degree at the University of
Toledo. She is pursuing her master’s of science in athletic training at Texas
State University in San Marcos.
Amy is the daughter of Janet and Donald Menzies. She has a sister, Julie.
Tim Clark
Director of Sports Information
Tim Clark starts his 12th year as the university’s director of sports
information and sports marketing. Clark works with all 14 TLU sports,
assisting in game-day operations and management of press boxes at all home
sporting events. Clark also handles the TLU Athletics web site, coordinates
the production of the university’s media guides (going paperless in 2009-10)
and produces all game programs. He also coordinates the video and audio
productions of university sporting events.
Clark and Patrick Zarate were honored in August 2009 as the Texas Lutheran Office of Sports
Information was named the Sports Information Office of the Year in the American Southwest
Conference.
Clark, Zarate and Jason Cade were honored in the 2005-06 Sports Information Directors’
Publications Contest when the 2005 football guide was named the fourth-best football guide in
Division C.
The 2005 football guide cover was the national winner in Division C for “Best Cover.”
Clark has won five NAIA Sports Information Directors Association awards for sports
publications, including a runner-up finish for the 1999 football guide in the NAIA Sports
Information Directors Publications Contest. The 2000 and 2003 football guides, along with the
2005 football guide, placed in the Top 10 in the CoSIDA Publications Contest for Division C.
Clark is a member of the College Sports Information Directors Association and serves as the
District VI coordinator for men’s soccer and baseball in the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-
America program. He was the chair of the American Southwest Conference Sports Information
Directors for the 2005-06 athletics seasons.
Clark has completed two Dallas White Rock marathons and has twice raced in the Texas
Water Safari boat race.
Clark and his wife Rebecca live in Seguin with their daughters Madison and Maya and family
pets Jewelsie, Joe, and Rash.
Patrick Zarate
Assistant Director of Sports Information
Patrick Zarate is in his seventh year as the assistant sports information
director. He also serves TLU as the head coach for women’s cross country
and women’s track and field. Zarate assists the TLU Office of Sports
Information in photography, game-day operations, media guide preparation
and web site updates.
In his work with the cross country and track and field teams, Zarate has
been a part of two NCAA Division III National Championships in relays. Zarate coached the
2007 women’s 4x400 meters indoor relay team to the first national title in DIII in school history.
And in 2008, Zarate helped the 2008 women’s 4x100 meters outdoor relay to the second DIII
national title in TLU school history.
Zarate has also been influential in TLU’s NCAA Division III national runner-up finish in the
2008 women’s 4x400 meters outdoor relay and in the three NCAA Division III national thirdplace
finishes: the 2007 women’s 4x100 meters outdoor relay, the 2008 women’s 4x400 meters
indoor relay, and Staci Jackson’s 2009 third-place finish in the 400 meters (the highest individual
finish in TLU’s DIII track and field history).
For his success at the national level, Zarate was the named the 2008 NCAA Division III
National Outdoor Coach of the Year for Women’s Track & Field.
Zarate and his wife Nichole were married June 4, 2005, in San Antonio. Nichole is pursuing
her doctoral degree in psychology. Patrick and Nichole each graduated from Texas Lutheran.
Patrick graduated in 2003, and Nichole received her degree in 2002. Patrick’s twin brother
Gregory, and his wife Molly, also attended Texas Lutheran.
Patrick enjoys running, all sporting activities and watching Houston-area sports teams
do well.
Judy Johnson
Athletics Department Administrative
Assistant
Judy Johnson is in her 20th year at Texas Lutheran. She is in her 19th
year as the athletics department administrative assistant.
Judy and her husband Jim have been married for 42 years. Judy, Jim and
daughter Trina are all graduates of Texas Lutheran. Jim works on the staff at
Emanuel’s Lutheran Church in Seguin.
The Johnsons have two children – Trina and Jamey – and two grandchildren – Heidi and
Braden.
Carl Vann
Custodian
Carl Vann is in his 18th year with Texas Lutheran University. Carl is the
custodian for the Jones Athletic Complex and the Marvin Rinn Field House.
Carl has been honored for his dedication to the TLU Athletics
Department. He has been named a TLU Honorary Coach and was awarded
the TLU Staffperson of the Year Award.
Carl, a lifelong resident of Seguin, has three children: John, Kenneth and
Tavara.
Drew Engelke
Photographer
Drew Engelke has assisted the TLU Athletics Department with its
photography needs for six years. Engelke has served as the official
photographer at most TLU sporting events and all of the university’s Front
Row events – the annual fundraisers for TLU Athletics.
In 2008, Engelke was honored for his official and volunteer work at TLU.
He was inducted into the TLU Athletics Wall of Honor.
Engelke has provided the major artwork for TLU media guides over the past six years, and he
is the regular photographer for each team’s picture day.
Engelke has also been supportive of TLU Athletics in other ways. He was instrumental in the
Seguin Volleyball Association’s donation of funds for the new sound system in Tostengard
Activity Center (the volleyball venue on the TLU campus). Engelke and the Seguin Volleyball
Association also donated new American flags for Tostengard Activity Center and for Memorial
Gymnasium.
