Remembering
Swearington
The Lobos’ 2008 offensive unit, starting seven
freshmen and led by sophomore quarterback
Monte Morales (Marfa), averaged 278 yards per
game, 159 on the ground. Freshman Jermaine
Swearington (Odessa Permian) gained 909 yards
in nine contests, averaged six yards per carry
and scored 10 touchdowns.
Coaches of Swearington, a former Permian
Panther who was shot and killed at a night club
in Midland in January, 2009, remember him as
a stellar athlete who was trying to get his life
back on track through football after serving a
three-and-a-half year prison sentence.
When Swearington suited up, he quickly made
an impact for the Lobos despite not having
played the game for five years. Swearington
ended up with 909 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns
on 151 carries, earning him First Team
American Southwest Conference honors as a
freshman.
"All the progress this young team made does
not show up on the scoreboard," said
Schroeder. "If these student-athletes continue
this level of commitment and cohesiveness, I
am very optimistic about the future."

Santiago Builds
Program
Mike Santiago came to San Antonio in late May
of 2007 saying he had always wanted to coach
football at a Catholic university and along with
that he had dreamed of starting a football program
at the collegiate level. When he was
offered and accepted the Incarnate Word position,
he knew what he was getting just maybe
he didn’t know what he was getting into.
Over the first 12 months at UIW, he often was
heard saying “be careful what you wish for…”.
And so, after weeks of rushing from a recruiting
meeting to a session about the Gayle and Tom
Benson Stadium construction project to another
gathering concerning budgeting or admissions or
maybe purchasing of equipment, Mike Santiago
was dreaming of “coaching football players.”
In February of 2008 Incarnate Word announced
its first-ever recruiting class and on that first signing
day the Cardinals inked 27 players. And it was
about that same time ground was broken on the
Benson Stadium on campus and over the ensuing
six months Coach Santiago, make that

FOCUS ON MCMURRY
Mumme to McMurry
McMurry University’s football program has been
in desperate need of an overhaul, and the university
believed that Hal Mumme would be the
man to create the change needed to a program
that has just three winning seasons since 1994.
Mumme welcomed 97 players to campus in
preparation for the 2009 season.
Mumme, the highly touted offensive coach and
originator of the Air Raid offense that many of
the big-time schools in the NCAA Division I are
running including Texas Tech, came to McMurry
as head coach in April.
Mumme said that his initial meeting with the
players would have a simple message, and the
same one that he’s given for 20 years.
“Give an honest effort, be loyal to your teammates,
and communicate,” Mumme said. “We
have one rule: Don’t hurt the team. There are
three things that will get you automatically dismissed
from our program: drugs, beating up
someone weaker than you, and stealing. And as
far as football goes, the most important play is
the next play. Play the next play.”

Cowboys = Consistent
If there is one word that describes the Hardin-
Simmons football program over the 20 years of
the Jimmie Keeling era it would have to be consistent.
The Cowboys have an average record of
8-2 in the first 19 years of the program. HSU
has won 10 conference titles and have been to
the playoffs 11 times.
The Cowboys have high expectations for this
season and for those to become reality HSU will
have to get through conference foe and recent
nemesis Mary Hardin-Baylor at least once and
probably twice on the road to Salem. The Cru
have beaten the Cowboys seven straight times
and nine of the last 10 meetings. Last year, the
Cowboys lost a pair of heartbreakers in Belton,
including one on a last-second field goal in the
playoffs.
A win in the regular season would keep a
record of program pride in the Cowboy locker
room. HSU holds the American Southwest
Conference record for most consecutive ASC
wins with 34. The Cru has won 29 in a row
going into the season.
