The economic r<strong>at</strong>e of return might actually be lower than the financial r<strong>at</strong>e ofreturn. The economic r<strong>at</strong>e of return is defined as the difference between the r<strong>at</strong>e of returnbetween the proposed project <strong>and</strong> the next best altern<strong>at</strong>ive. If the government savingscertific<strong>at</strong>e is considered the next best altern<strong>at</strong>ive, then the r<strong>at</strong>e of return range will be loweredto 113-733 (approx.). However, it might be possible th<strong>at</strong> there are other investments, whichprovide a higher r<strong>at</strong>e of return than 4.21 times.It must also be noted th<strong>at</strong> no value was assigned to the environmental gains/losses th<strong>at</strong>this plant<strong>at</strong>ion would provide. This plant<strong>at</strong>ion project would play a role in meeting the environmental responsibility of<strong>BRAC</strong> as biodiversity conserv<strong>at</strong>ion serve a carbon sink to reduce emission of greenhouse gases(GHGs).From liter<strong>at</strong>ure review <strong>and</strong> discussion it was found th<strong>at</strong> the dem<strong>and</strong> for agarwoodcurrently far exceeds the available global supply. Over harvesting <strong>and</strong> over-exploit<strong>at</strong>ion ofAquilaria species from the n<strong>at</strong>ure for agarwood production has made this plant thre<strong>at</strong>ened.Therefore, <strong>BRAC</strong>’s agarwood plant<strong>at</strong>ion would help reduce the pressure on n<strong>at</strong>ural Aquilariaspecies <strong>and</strong> to conserve it. On the other h<strong>and</strong>, successful production <strong>and</strong> harvesting ofagarwood would earn foreign currency <strong>and</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>e employment opportunity specially forwomen in agar producing industry.8 Owing to carbon dioxide absorption <strong>and</strong> biodiversity conserv<strong>at</strong>ion as Agar is a n<strong>at</strong>ive thre<strong>at</strong>enedspecies.19
