Greenwich project, London, UK, Kebony SYPWhat is kebonization?Kebonization is a patented process in whichwood properties are enhanced. The woodbecomes harder and more stable, with improveddurability. The liquid used in the process contains a bio-basedsubstance which enchances the cell structure. Theprocess involves the following four stages:1/ Ingredients are mixed according to a paten tedrecipe, using a liquid derived from a agriculturalbiowaste2/ The liquid is impregnated into the woodunder pressure3/ The wood is heated to above 100˚C andthe chemical is polymerized permanentlytransforming the cell structure4/ Excess liquid is recycled and re-used in theproduction processKebony’s patented modification methods are theresult of many years research and developmentin Norway, Sweden and Canada. They are alsobased on collaborations with universities andinstitutes in Germany, the Netherlands, USA andSouth Africa, including the Norwegian Instituteof Wood Technology, the Norwegian Forest andLandscape Institute, the SP Technical ResearchInstitute of Sweden, SHR Timber Research in theNetherlands, and the University of New Brunswickand Woodtech in Canada.6

Kebonization givesdurability and strengthOne notable benefit of kebonized wood is itsresistance to weather and wear; an importantproperty in situations where wood is exposedto the elements. Kebony is particularly suitablefor use in outdoor applications such as decking, terrace surfaces and jetties. The main criteria for using the Swan label:No heavy metal addedNo biocides addedProduced from sustainable forestryDurabilityDoes not create problems in the disposal phaseOther notable benefits are its exceptionally gooddecay resistance and long life span. This durabilityis achieved without the drawbacks associatedwith traditional impregnation methods. That is whyKebony has been granted the Swan eco-label forits environmental credentials.12

Kebony is far more stable than the parentwood. Over time, Kebony patinates whenexposed to the elements.Kebony has the appearance of tropicalhardwood and acquires a silver greypatina over time. Kebony wood hasimproved stability and durability makingit the ideal choice in construction.Kebony wood– an exciting new material14

Quality Spa & Resort, Kragerø, Norway, Kebony PineQuality Spa & Resort Kragerøwith 28,000 sq. m. of Kebony wood“Lund Hagem Architects often utilize wood inour projects, and prefer to do so. We believe thatwood is a material with many good properties,”says Einar Hagem.“Whenever possible, we opt for solutions that allowthe wood to retain its natural appearance – withoutpaint or other types of treatment. Wood also worksextremely well in natural environments and inconjunction with other building materials such asconcrete, slate, steel and glass. We had previously tried out Kebony wood in someof our smaller projects. We had also kept materialsamples to observe how the wood reacts to sun, wind and rain over time. So when we won thecontract to design Quality Spa & Resort Kragerø,we recommended Kebony Pine as one of thematerials to be used.We placed particular emphasis on the colour tonesand patina that will develop over the years to come.We try to avoid painting or staining of façades, bothfor reasons of maintenance and also to bring outthe material’s appearance of roughness. The factthat the impregnation method has a documentedecological profile is very positive.”Lund Hagem Arkitekter AS seeks to form a modern, timeless architectural style which is clearly rootedin Nordic traditions. This has won the firm ofarchitects considerable acclaim for its projects,as well as a number of awards. And what couldbe more natural in Norwaythan bringing wood into thegarden?Wood that is used in gardenshas to withstand the harshNorwegian climate. A lot canbe said in favour of copperimpregnation, but it isn’texactly attractive. The alternative is having tospend the few sunny summer days we do geton painting, oiling or staining. With Kebony woodthis could all be a thing of the past. Durable andbeautiful all in one go!Darren Saines is one of Norway’s leading landscapeand garden designers. He has undertakennumerous exciting projects and often recommendsKebony wood as an integral part of the gardendesign.
