THE BELL <strong>PRIZE</strong>Given for outstanding work and interest in the Middle<strong>School</strong> newspaper.Joshua S. LeeJohn Patrick ThomasHAMPERS LYCEUM AWARDEstablished in 1984 by the Hampers family and awarded to thatmember of the Lyceum who has contributed the most to the Upper<strong>School</strong> debating program through leadership, speaking ability,and performance at tournaments.Alexander B. Starr2010 COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDSBURT COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDWas established in 1985 and named in 1988 for Edward M. Burt, a faculty member for 20 years at <strong>Belmont</strong> <strong>Hill</strong>who was instrumental in founding our Community Service program. Today, Community Service takes onmany dimensions at <strong>Belmont</strong> <strong>Hill</strong>. Nearly 70% of students participate in on – or off- campus activities, whichinclude: work crew and helping the elderly in their homes; a weekly poker group at the nursing home;collections of coats, blankets, and clothing, athletic equipment, school supplies – all these for institutions suchas Shriner’s Hospital, Douglas House, and Ronald McDonald House, Boston after school programs, Children’sFirst Academy – a school for homeless children in Phoenix. This year the largest-ever food drive in the historyof the school – 4,000 pounds! On-campus service activities include SADD and its Valentine Flower Exchangewith proceeds to Dana Farber; Blood Drives, Oxfam, Peer Leadership, and Peer Tutoring.In March, another record setting trip - with 63 students and 7 adults spending their first week of Spring Break inPhoenix, AZ., to work with native Yaqui Indians as well as Mexican-Americans in the town of Guadalupe -serving that community in many ways. In addition, students and adults also volunteered in India, working withSmile Train – helping children with cleft lip and cleft palate as they came to the hospital for surgery.Although “hands-on” involvement is the backbone of our programs, we also raised over $20,000 for charities,and of that, nearly $6000 was for Haiti. WoodrowWARBURG COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDThe Max Warburg Community Service Award was established by the Coppedge Family in 1991 in memory ofMax Warburg, a young boy who was diagnosed with leukemia in 1990, yet continued to face life withoptimism, courage and cheerful determination. He died shortly after having a bone marrow transplant inPage 3 of 13


December 1990 -- just four days after receiving his acceptance to <strong>Belmont</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>School</strong>. Many in the <strong>Belmont</strong><strong>Hill</strong> community participated in the bone marrow drives.This award recognizes the unselfish involvement of a member or members of the senior class in a project ofcommunity service throughout their <strong>Belmont</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> years:Robert S.
