03Project Programme0303 “<strong>Conserving</strong> <strong>Wan</strong> <strong>Chai</strong> <strong>Market</strong>” Design Charrette030301 <strong>Summary</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Design Charrette:• The Design Charrette was held on 30 July 2004 at <strong>the</strong> HongKong Institute <strong>of</strong> Architects.• The aims were to explore for ideas and concepts on anyalternatives to <strong>the</strong> demolition <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wan</strong> <strong>Chai</strong> <strong>Market</strong>, which canallow for conservation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Market</strong> and achieve a multi-winssituation.• Nearly 80 participants <strong>of</strong> various backgrounds got involved inpersonal capacities. They came from (1) different pr<strong>of</strong>essions/ universities including building surveying, architecture,planning, conservation, h<strong>is</strong>tory, art and culture, and highwaysengineering; (2) business sectors; (3) local governmentorgan<strong>is</strong>ations and Departments including D<strong>is</strong>trict Office, D<strong>is</strong>trictCouncil, Planning Department, Highways Department andArchitectural Services Department; (4) non-governmentorgan<strong>is</strong>ations including Conservancy Association, Arts Centre,St. James Settlement, Brit<strong>is</strong>h Council, HKU Museum, Boys’ andGirls’ Club Association; (5) Rutonjee Hospital; and (6) localresidents.• Participants were divided into 4 groups, hence 4 groups <strong>of</strong>ideas and concepts were developed.11
