Casing Successfully and Safely to
TD in Extended-Reach Well
Objectives
• Run 9 5/8-in. casing to a total depth of 17,286 ft (5,269 m) in
very difficult hole conditions. Drilling the 12 1/4-in. hole had
been a challenge. Severe losses and very sticky hole
conditions were encountered while tripping out.
Results
• Weatherford’s solution was the OverDrive system and
TorkDrive heavy-duty tool combined with electronically
monitored and recorded torque-turn data for the VAM TOP ®
connections provided by the JAMPro joint-analyzed
makeup system and TorkSub load cell.
• Friction-reducing LoDRAG roller centralizers were
installed on the casing string, combined with a 12-in. OD
Diamondback reamer shoe on the bottom to overcome
anticipated or unexpected casing running problems.
• The casing was run and worked successfully through the
difficult hole conditions to TD in 94 hr, including 40 hr of
circulation with rotation, reciprocation, and push-down.

Value to Client
• The ability to circulate, reciprocate, and rotate the casing with
the TorkDrive tool allowed the string to pass safely through
numerous tight spots to TD over a 5-day period.
• Casing running “flat” time was calculated for a 13-day period,
but actual flat time was 6 days.
• Electronic torque-turn data recording ensured fast and correct
makeup of the premium connections.

The OverDrive system provides outstanding
top-drive casing makeup and DwC (drilling-
with-casing) performance. The system allows the
driller to rotate and push (or pull) the casing
string while circulating, making it ideal for high-
angle, extended-reach wells. It overcomes drag
on long strings of lateral pipe, mitigates wellbore
sloughing, and efficiently handles other instability
issues.
