She drew attention to the fact that, although certain Sections were very good at keeping up to date with theirsubscriptions, certain others, such as Bangladesh and Congo, made absolutely no attempt even to keep intouch with the Bureau about any difficulties they might be experiencing and had, consequently, had to bedissolved.RTB referred, in passing, to the problem with the dollar exchange rate.HMH thanked AB for her valuable work and again emphasised the importance for National Sections to payover their subscriptions punctually. It was imperative for any Sections that had problems with their payments todiscuss these with the Bureau at the earliest possible moment.AB added that there was a financial cost to the Bureau for all the unnecessary work they had to do, chasing upSections that were late with their payments – most obviously, because this took away from the time that wouldotherwise be available for fundraising for individual projects.Liam Kelly commented that the most recent figures Board members had been given were for 2006. Hesuggested members should be given the complete outturn for the preceding year, so that they could makeyear-on-year comparisons.AB agreed to this request and said that the respective outturns would be posted on-line in the near future.VOTE. Report unanimously approved (25 votes).HMH thanked his fellow members in the Executive Bureau for their contributions and proposed a short break. However, Brane Kovic suggested changing the order of the agenda, so that ‘Future Congresses’ could bedealt with before the break. This met with general agreement.3. Future Congresses2008 Congress - AustraliaAICA Congress 2008Evaluating Contemporary Art : Rethinking Taste, Quality and JudgementArt Gallery of the New South Wales – Sydney7-11 July 2008One of the key tasks of both the curator and the art critic is the assessment and judgement of contemporary art. Whilethe meaning of judgement has traditionally been defined and analysed by the discipline of aesthetics, rather than artcriticism of art history , there is an increasing need for all areas of art scholarship concerned with contemporary art toconsider the operation of individual and collective judgement. The need to consider how judgements are made is highlighted by the challenges of contemporary art. These include theincreasingly global reach of contemporary art, as well as some of the key shifts in contemporary practice such as : thearchival turn, relational aesthetics, the rise of new media and the interdisciplinarity nature of contemporary art practice, for example design art and interventionist art. These changes in art practice suggest the need of new criteria in theevaluation of art as well as knowledge of non-art matters to enable the assessment of art. In other words, the closeattention to artists’ material and processes that we traditionally associate with good curatorial and critical practice nowneed to be applied to an understanding of the diverse and challenging contexts of production. This conference will address questions as such : what knowledge is necessary for transnational or interdisciplinarityjudgement about contemporary art ? Do large-scale international exhibitions need a team of experts ? Does judgementalways imply the operation of taste ? Now that taste is not restricted to judgements about beauty or sublimity whatguides its operation ?Programme- Sunday 6th July : Board Meeting- Monday 7th July : Quality and Authenticity- Tuesday 8th July : Aboriginal Art- Wednesday 9th July : Asian Art- Thursday 10th July : Biennales- Friday 11th July : General AssemblySusan Best, Secretary of AICA Australia gave a quick presentation of plans for the Congress.
