USLBridgeCareFEBA JointsFEBA Joint SystemsUSL BridgeCare offers two asphaltic plug joint systems which are registered withthe UK Highways Agency, Scottish and Welsh Assembly’s for use on all classes ofhighway bridges:FEBA – is a standard asphaltic plug joint which provides a flexible, waterproof jointwith excellent ride quality for road users and noiseless characteristics for minimalimpact on the environment. Asphaltic plug joints are recognised as being suitablefor a maximum design movement of +/-20mm horizontally and +/-1.5mm vertically(Highways Agency Standard BD33/94) and are ideal for use on bridges with lowtraffic volumes such as B roads.FEBA HM - is a high modulus asphaltic plug joint suitable for low to mediummovement on heavily trafficked highway bridges. FEBA HM is a special blendof bitumen, polymers, fillers and a surface active agent, formulated to combinegood fluidity at process temperatures with low temperature flexibility andambient temperature slump control. The use of basalt aggregates(BS EN 13043) ensures excellent load bearing capacity and high resistanceto wheel tracking. This amalgamation of a highly flexible binder and singlesized interlocking aggregate allows the system to provide excellentanti rutting characteristics.Please note: design, construction and installation criteria remains thesame for both joint types.FM11022

The width of the FEBAis selected depending upon thebridge deck movement factorsand the nature of the traffic usingthe structure. Optimum movementcapacity is attained in joints500mm nominal width and no lessthan 100mm deep. The materialsare applied hot and in fluidcondition, with temperatures upto 180°C - consequently carefulconsideration should be made bythe Engineer before utilising FEBAin the vicinity of services of anyStatutory Authority unless suitablyprotected.Binder compounds are classifiedas thermoplastic materials andconsist of a blend of polymermodified bitumen, mineral fillersand chemical additives.FEBA utilises a nominal three sizeaggregate mix of 20mm (nominal)graded chippings. In joints lessthan 100mm deep, gradedaggregate with smaller sized stonemay be selected.Drainage may be built into thejoint as a pressure relief systemto the adjacent road construction.The use of drainage is designedto protect the surfacing anddeck waterproofing from theeffects of water trapped adjacentto the asphaltic plug joints,however it should be noted thatit is not essential to the correctfunctioning of the FEBA joint noris it a substitute for positive deckdrainage.Conventionally pressure relief isinstalled along the joint on theupstream face, most usually whenthe FEBA is at the low end ofa bridge deck (see figure 1). Inthis instance it is recommendedthat in-joint drainage is used inconjunction with a more positiveand larger capacity ‘Dri Deck’drainage system, supplied byPipeline and Drainage Systems.Standard metal bridging platesare suitable for up to a 45mmmaximum gap opening - for largergaps, it is recommended thatwider plates of a heavier gauge beused.
