USLBridgeCareFEBA JointsiiiiivviiivInstallationAdditional Informationi) The surfacing is cut tothe specified width in thecarriageway using a floor sawand a trench is excavated.ii) This cut-out together with thepreviously formed recess in theverge/central reserve is cleanedand dried with hot compressedair.iii) The expansion gap is thencaulked and the deck sealedwith hot binder. If specified, injoint hydraulic relief is installed, metal bridging plates insertedover the gap and the entiretrench tanked with binder.iv) The aggregate is heated andpre-coated with the binderbefore being placed into thetrench. The layer is then floodedwith binder before subsequentlayers are placed. The joint isallowed to cool before the finallayer is applied—this is stonerich, brought marginally abovethe road surface and thencompacted to the level of theadjacent carriageway.v) Finally the joint is flooded withbinder to the finished profileand allowed to cool to ambienttemperature. Normally the jointcan be trafficked in 3-4 hours, but this will depend on theambient temperature, depth ofjoint and the general weatherconditions.vi) A final application of bindermay be necessary to blend inany small interstices which mayappear on the surface of thejoint whilst cooling.vii) Anti skid dressing is applied tothe joint. At the onset of unacceptably wetweather conditions or for exampleat the end of normal workinghours, the joint construction maybe suspended and continued at alater stage.Technical & Advisory ServicesFurther technical informationmay be obtained on request andconsultation is encouraged toensure choice of materials selectedand detailing is optimised to suit inserviceperformance requirementsand economic solutions.Health & SafetyUSL operate a strict health andsafety policy and details areavailable on request.Note:The colours used in the illustrationmay not be indicative of thefinished product.
