2013 Toledo Spring Outlookwill challenge him. But Terrance is not bothered bycompetition,” said Campbell. “He’s never shaken. Hisdemeanor was always the same whether he was thestarter or whether he came off the bench. Terrance wasone of our most consistent players last year, and I don’tsee that changing. If everybody on ourteam matches his level of consistency, that would be a great benefit for us. Notonly do I think Terrance is one of thebetter quarterbacks in our conference,I believe he is one of the betterquarterbacks in the country. His goalis to win a MAC championship. That’sthe one goal he wants to accomplishin his college career.”Owens would probably like toimprove upon his numbers from 2012(2,705 yards, 61.4%, 14 TDs, 8 INTs).More importantly, he must provide theleadership needed to help lead Toledoto its first MAC title since 2004.Backing up Owens at quarterbackare junior Dwight Macon, who alsodoubles as a wide receiver; redshirtfreshman Brian Blackburn; and truefreshman Logan Woodside. Macon isa great athlete with a strong arm whountil now hasn’t had much experiencethrowing the ball. At 6-6, Blackburn hasthe height that makes it easier to pick out his target.Woodside graduated from high school in Decemberand joined the Rockets for winter workouts, makingit feasible that he could compete for playing time thisfall.Toledo’s bounty on offense includes senior runningback David Fluellen. Fluellen came into his own in2012, rushing for 1,498 yards and 12 touchdowns. Heearned first-team All-MAC honors and was a semifinalistfor the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top rusher. Aninjury early in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl preventedhim from cracking the 1,500-yard mark, but don’t besurprised if Fluellen makes a run at that milestone thisfall.“David Fluellen is healthy and looks great,” saidCampbell. “He’s established himself as a premierrunning back, really one of the best in the country.”Bernard Reedy caught 88passes and score four TDs onspecial teams in 2012.While Fluellen is known as a tough runner who cangain yardage inside or out, he is backed up by a trio ofpure speedsters. Junior Cassius McDowell provides agood complement to Fluellen. McDowell (372 yardsin 2012) is a quick runner who can get to the outsidein a hurry. Redshirt freshmen DamianJones-Moore and Marc Remy are alsospeedsters who will get serious evaluationby the coaching staff this spring. The Rockets are loaded at widereceiver, too. Senior speedster BernardReedy (88 receptions, six TDs) is a threatto go long every time he touches the ball.A true triple threat, Reedy earned firstteamAll-MAC honors at wide receiverand punt returner, as well as second-teamall-league at kickoff returner. SophomoreAlonzo Russell (56 receptions, five TDs)is a triple threat in his own right. At 6-4,he has the height to go up for balls, thestrength to go over the middle and thespeed to go deep.Juniors Justin Olack (19 receptions)and Dwight Macon (18 catches), aswell as senior James Green (eightreceptions) give Toledo experience anddepth. Sophomore Kishon Wilcher is anintriguing possibility, as well. A backupcornerback and special teams expertin 2011, Wilcher missed all of last year with an injury.Campbell would like to take advantage of Wilcher’sspeed and try him out at receiver this spring.Toledo has experience at tight end, as well.Sophomore Alex Zmolik distinguished himself as asolid blocker last year, and two of his three receptionswere for touchdowns. Junior Zac Rosenbauer isanother good blocker who can play fullback in shortyardagesituations.Perhaps the biggest key to Toledo’s offensive successlast season was the development of the offensive line.Four starters are back, including senior center Zac Kerin(first-team All-MAC) and junior guard Greg Mancz(third-team). Juniors Josh Hendershot and Jeff Myersare back at left tackle and left guard, respectively. Onlythe right tackle position needs to be filled. Junior ChaseNelson (6-8, 335) and redshirt freshman Storm Norton

2013 Toledo Spring Outlook(6-8, 310) are a pair of giants who will be battling it outthis spring. Junior Robert Lisowski was a key reserve in2012 and figures to be in the rotation again this year.DefenseToledo’s defense has made great strides in the pastfew years. Now the Rockets are faced with the challengeof replacing numerous key performers who were a bigpart of that resurgence.Eight starters are gone from last season’s team, includinga pair of first-team All-MAC players in linebackerDan Molls and safety Jermaine Robinson. But Campbellis excited about his returning veterans, as well as somenew faces in the lineup.“We have many players who may not have been starterslast year, but who played a lot and are battle-tested,”said Campbell. “When I see the level of athleticism wehave in our defense, I’m very excited. We have the potentialto be very good.”The defensive line is a good example. All four playerswho started on the line in Toledo’s final game last seasonare gone. But the Rockets have six other players who haveeither been starters or played extensively as a reserve.Senior defensive end Christian Smith is Toledo’s mostexperienced D-lineman. A part-time starter in both hisfreshman and sophomore seasons, Smith became a fulltimestarter last year. He was leading the down-linemenin tackles when he went down with a season-endinginjury in the fifth game of the season. He is healthy nowand poised for a big season.“It was tough losing Christian last year,” said Campbell.“He has recovered nicely from his knee injury. He’splayed a lot of football here and is definitely one of theleaders on this team.”Toledo has a veteran at the other defensive endspot, senior Jayrone Elliott. Eliiott had 31 tackles andone sack as a sophomore and 18 tackles and six sacksas a junior. Campbell feels Elliott is ready to step into afull-time role in 2013.Campbell will be looking closely at a number ofother defensive end candidates this spring, most notablyjunior Ray Bush and sophomores Allen Covingtonand Kennan Gibbs. Bush is moving from linebacker, while Gibbs is coming back after missing all of 2012due to injury.Toledo’s most experienced inside lineman is seniorElijah Jones. Jones had 31 tackles and 7.5 tackles forloss as part of the regular rotation as a junior. A pair ofJunior cornerback Cheatham Norrills earned thirdteamAll-MAC honors in 2012.sophomores who saw some action last year —OrionJones and Chris Collins—are expected to competeat the other defensive tackle spot. Sophomore juniorcollege transfer Robert Zimmerman has the size (6-3,325 pounds) that will automatically put him on the radarscreen this spring. At linebacker, the Rockets have a hole the size of266 tackles to fill. That’s the number of stops that DanMolls (166) and Robert Bell (100) combined for in 2012.Replacing those outgoing seniors would seem to be adaunting task but Campbell is confident that his linebackingcorps won’t miss a beat.Part of the reason for Campbell’s optimism is thereturn of sophomore Trent Voss. Voss had 47 tacklesas a freshman, but by the end of the season he wasregarded as one of Toledo’s best defenders. Voss (6-3,220) played inside and outside linebacker last year, andis quick enough to play safety, according to Campbell.Competing with Voss at outside linebacker are a pairof seniors, Vladimir Emilen (33 tackles in 2012) andEthan Kagy. The competition at “Mike” and “Will” linebackerwill be fierce this spring. Junior Sylvestre, a junior,is the most experienced returnee, totaling 49 tackleslast season. Sophomore Chase Murdock (11 tackles)also looked good in limited action last year. Redshirt-continued next page-

freshman Jaylen Coleman and junior walk-on DrakeFletcher will be examined closely this spring.Toledo’s secondary also lost three starters from ayear ago so the battles this spring figure to be intense.Junior Cheatham Norrils (74 tackles,2 interceptions) earned third-teamAll-MAC honors at cornerback last yearand figures to be a cornerstone of thedefense in 2013. Norrils will be challengedby sophomore Juwan Haynes(11 tackles) for the starting nod at onecorner spot, while sophomore ChrisDukes (35 tackles) and junior CameronCole figure to be battling on theother side of the field.Senior Ross Madison (24 tackles)and junior Jordan Haden (16 tackles, two interceptions) are veteran candidatesat strong safety. Youth maybe the order of the day at free safety, where redshirt freshman Danny Larkinsand sophomore Chaz Whitakerwill be vying for playing time.2013 Toledo Spring Outlook-continued from previous page-Special TeamsToledo’s special teams were a big plus in 2012 andshould be that way again this fall. Junior placekickerJeremiah Detmer earned second-team All-MAC honorsby connecting on 24-of-29 field goals in 2012. He alsomade his last 17 kicks in a row, and showed a big leg byproducing 23 touchbacks on kickoffs.Senior Vince Penza is a solid punter who is probablybetter than his 40.5 average. Penza’s strength is his accuracy;21 of his 58 punts were downed inside the 20, andopponents only managed to return 15 of his punts for anaverage of 7.2 yards per return. Detmer and junior BradDunavant are listed as Toledo’s reserves at punter, withDunavant doubling as Detmer’s backup at placekicker. On the receiving end of special teams, Toledo isblessed with one of the best return men in the country, senior Bernard Reedy. Reedy scored four special teamstouchdowns last season (three kickoff, one punt), andranked in the top 25 nationally in yards per return in bothcategories. Another speedster, junior Cassius McDowell,Jeremiah Detmer connected on 17consecutive field goals last year.is back for kickoff returns. Campbell wants to take a lookat a number of young legs at kickoff and punt returnsthis spring, as well.2013 ScheduleIn 92 seasons of playing football, the University ofToledo has never played a school from the SoutheasternConference. That will change in a bigway this fall. The Rockets will begin their 2013football season playing not one, buttwo games against SEC foes. Toledoopens up with road contests at Floridaand at Missouri, undoubtedly thetoughest opening assignment inschool history.“Our schedule is very challenging, particularly at the start of the season, but we are looking forward to it,” saidCampbell. “Not only do we travel toFlorida and Missouri, but we openat home against a very good EasternWashington team (Sept. 14), thenplay two conference road games atCentral Michigan and Ball State. Iknow our players will rise to meet thechallenge.”Toledo’s season opener will come on Aug. 31 against aFlorida team that finished the season with an 11-2 record, ranked No. 9 in the AP poll and No. 10 in the USA Todaycoaches poll. The Rockets then travel to Missouri wherethey will face former UT head coach Gary Pinkel’s Tigers.Pinkel coached the Rockets from 1991-2000, compilinga 73-37-3 mark. He was inducted into UT’s Varsity ‘T’ Hallof Fame in 2009. Missouri was 5-7 in 2012, its first in theSEC and first losing season since 2004.The Rockets’ other two non-conference foes are alsoformidable. Eastern Washington was 9-2 last year andadvanced to the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs. The Eagleswere FCS champions in 2010. Q & A With Matt CampbellHow do you assess yoursquad coming into springpractice?Campbell: The first thing I willsay is that every year presentsa new type of football team.I think the dynamic of thisteam is that we have someplayers who have played alot of football and have beensuccessful in our footballprogram, but then there area lot of really young guysthat are getting their firstopportunity to battle forpositions. So our goal during theoff-season and through thewinter workouts has been toreally challenge this footballteam, make them competeand really kind of hold themaccountable to each and every detail. And I really likethe way this team has worked. I think it’s a team that sofar has shown the ability to work hard every day. I thinkwe can really go into spring and attack the fundamentalsand details. We are going to see some great position battlesunfold this spring. That’s probably the most excitingthing for our coaching staff. I really believe we will havea very deep team. You mentioned the details. What kind of details areyou focusing on this spring?Campbell: When we look back to last season, you seethat we lost three games by seven points or less. I thinkour attitude and effort was tremendous in every game. There was not a game that the Toledo Rockets did notshow up. But I think what we see when we look at thefilms of those losses is that the details of execution werenot always what they needed to be in really criticalsituations. The only way to fix that is you have to cometo work every day and try to get better at the details. Ithink that’s been our priority in winter workouts and itwill certainly carry over intothe spring practice. Those details couldbe anything from workingon red-zone offense andred-zone defense, to beingmore successful on thirddowns, to understanding theimportance in field positionof every special teams play. Our focus throughout winterworkouts has been on thedetails, things like finishingthrough the line duringrunning drills. It’s a questionof being accountable to yourteammates every day. You’re coming off back-toback9-4 seasons and a stringof three consecutive bowlbids. That automaticallycreates high expectationsfor this year. What are your feelings about what thisteam is capable of achieving?Campbell: I think we will probably know a lot moreabout ourselves as we come out of spring practice. Wehave a mix of veterans and younger guys, so until youput them in live situations you really don’t know whatyou have until the lights come on.We’ve got a veteran offense this year and morenewcomers on the defensive side of the football.Going into last year, the situation was reversed, thedefense had more veterans. But the offensive line reallyjelled, and (WR) Bernard Reedy, (RB) David Fluellenand (QB) Terrance Owens really made their names forthemselves. So you never know. We feel really goodabout our talent on both sides of the ball, but it’s abouthow they develop and how they gel together throughspring practices, through summer workouts and fallcamp. How important are the evaluations you make duringspring ball?

Q & A With Matt CampbellAt linebacker, you are losing theheart of your defense in DanMolls, but also another starter,Robert Bell. So who is going to playlinebacker for you this year?Campbell: When you talk aboutlinebacker, you have to talk about(sophomore) Trent Voss. Trent canplay inside or outside linebacker, butwe will probably start him on theoutside at the star position. He hada great freshman season, and he’skept that momentum going in theoff-season. Trent is as skilled as anylinebacker we’ve had at Toledo sinceI’ve been here. We like the mentalityhe plays the game with.(Senior) Ethan Kagy will move from safety to outsidelinebacker. He will battle for time with (junior) BrandonKillebrew. At one of the inside spots, we are looking at(junior) Junior Sylvestre. Junior mostly played outsidelinebacker last year, but we decided to move him intothe box to the Will linebacker spot. We moved him thereduring the bowl practices and he really played well, which turned out to be a good thing because that’swhere he ended up playing in the bowl game due toDan Molls’ injury. Junior is one of the best athletes onour team. (Junior) Drake Fletcher, a preferred walk-on,will be battling Junior. At the Mike linebacker spot, we have a great racebetween (sophomore) Chase Murdock and (redshirtfreshman) Jaylen Coleman. Chase had an opportunityto play on special teams last year and did a great job,and Jaylen has worked hard so we will be looking athim. Also, (senior) Vladimir Emilien is coming off aninjury and we hope to have him back by the end of thespring. We have great expectations for Vlad. Can you talk about your secondary?Campbell: At cornerback we have (junior) CheathamNorrils. Cheatham was third-team All-MAC last yearand has the talent to be one of the better playersin the conference. He just needs to work on hisconsistency. (Sophomore) Juwan Haynes played a lotas a true freshman last year. He brings a lot to the table.“When we look back to last season yousee that we lost three games by sevenpoints or less. I think our attitude andeffort was tremendous in every game. There was not a game that the ToledoRockets did not show up. But I thinkwhat we see when we look at the filmsof those losses is that the details ofexecution were not always what theyneeded to be in really critical situations. The only way to fix that is you have tocome every day to work and to try andget better at the details.”(Sophomore) Chris Dukes saw a lot of action as a backuplast year so we are eager to see how he has improved.Another player to watch is (junior) Cameron Cole, ajunior-college transfer who is in his second year in theprogram now. And (sophomore) Kishon Wilcher is backafter missing all of last year with an injury. He was one ofour better special teams players as a freshman and hasexperience at corner, though we will be looking at himat wide receiver this spring. Those five will be battlingat cornerback this spring. At safety, we don’t have a lot of experience but oneguy who has played a lot is (senior) Ross Madison. Hehas played well for us and should help us bridge theexperience gap at safety. (Junior) Jordan Haden willprobably play both safety and corner, but we are goingto start him off at safety and let him challenge for astarting spot there. And two young guys who stand outare (sophomore) Chaz Whitaker and (redshirt freshman)D.J. Larkins. Chaz played a ton on special teams andgot an opportunity to play a little bit at safety. He has achance to be special. D.J. redshirted as a wide receiverlast year, but we felt he could help us in the secondarythis year. (Redshirt freshman) Travis Nees is anothersafety who had a good winter for us, as well.Okay, let’s shift to the offense. The offensive line hasfour of five starters returning. That’s a good placeto start.Campbell: I think that piece of the puzzle is positive for

Q & A With Matt Campbellus. If you would have asked me about the offensive lineat this time last year, there were some question marks. We thought our top five guys would be good but wewere worried about our depth. Right now I think weare as good and as deep as we’ve ever been across ouroffensive front. You can start with our All-MAC lineman, (seniorcenter) Zac Kerin and (junior guard) Greg Mancz. Zacmight be as good a center as there is in the country. Hedeserves to be talked about like that. Greg Mancz is alsoone of the best offensive linemen in our conference. And then we have our other two returning starters,(junior guard) Jeff Myers and (sophomore tackle) JoshHendershot, who were very solid for us on the left sideof the line last year.We will have a good battle for the right tackle spot.Right now the leading candidates are (junior) ChaseNelson and (junior) Rob Lisowski. Chase has had a greatoff-season. We are looking forward to seeing him gothrough a full 15 practices this spring. Rob saw the mostplaying time last year of any of our reserves. When hehad an opportunity to play, Rob did a lot of good thingsfor us.We have some young players who redshirtedas freshmen last year that we are excited to see thisspring. James Henry and Storm Norton are big tackleswho have had good off-seasons. We are very eager tosee them develop. Paul Pershon and Ray Marlowe areguards who are in a position to compete for playingtime. And Colin Perchinske is a sophomore can playeither guard or tackle. How about at tight end?Campbell: There is great competition at tight end.Our top returner is (sophomore) Alex Zmolik, who wasabout as productive as any freshman we had last year. He’s a fine pass-catcher and blocker. Inside the boxhe’s a tough kid. Backing him up is (redshirt freshman)Craig Runyan. He had to sit our last year with a shoulderinjury but we’re glad to have him back and excited tosee what he can do. (Redshirt freshman) Mike Ebert isanother young guy who got hurt in fall camp last yearbut was able to come back and start practicing againin the bowl season.I’d like to also mention (junior) Zac Rosenbauer, who plays the fullback/H-Back spot in our offense. Zacwas very effective in that role last year and proved hebelonged on the field in critical situations. Backing upZac is (junior) Dawalyn Harper who is now full-time onthe offensive side of the ball.At wide receiver you have a great one, seniorBernard Reedy.Campbell: It’s been great to see Bernard’s developmentsince his freshman season. A year ago everybody wasasking how we would replace Eric Page. We neverthought too much about it because we knew we hadBernard. He’s one of those guys who practices just ashard as he plays. He’s a leader; he brings it every day.(Sophomore) Alonzo Russell had a big freshman season. He has big-play ability. Now he needs to take the nextstep and add consistency to his game. If he can do thathe has a chance to be a very special football player. Ourthird returning starter, (junior) Justin Olack, is comingoff shoulder surgery, so he will be limited this spring. Wereally felt like he played his best football at the end oflast season. He could have a break-out season for us.(Junior) Dwight Macon will continue to split timeat wide receiver and quarterback. Dwight is verytalented and can do a lot of things on the football field.(Sophomore) Zach Rogers has also shown us flashesthat he can be a great football player. And then there’sJames Green, who’s a senior now and has really workedhard this off-season.The running back position looks strong, too.Campbell: (Senior) David Fluellen is healthy and looksgreat. He’s established himself as a premier runningback, really one of the best in the country. We’re reallyexcited to see how (junior) Cassius McDowell develops. He gives us that quick, speedy back to complementDavid. Another guy who could have played as a truefreshman last year but we decided to redshirt him isDamian Jones-Moore. We are excited about his futurein the program. Another redshirt freshman back thereis (redshirt freshman) Marc Remy. Marc has playedreceiver and running back, but we’re going to starthim at running back this spring. He’s much strongernow; he’s added about 10 to 15 pounds and has greatpotential.

Q & A With Matt CampbellYour situation at quarterback is different comparedto the last couple of seasons. Instead of two relativelyequal players battling for playing time, you have aclear leader, senior Terrance Owens.Campbell: Yes, it’s a little different. We have onequarterback, (senior) Terrance Owens, who took about80 percent of the snaps last year. He’s a veteran and itshows. He’s more comfortable now as a leader on thisteam. It’s a huge spring for him. We can put a lot moreof the offense in his hands and let him run with it. He’sa fifth-year senior now and has a right to claim thestarting position. The interesting thing to watch will be thedevelopment of our young quarterbacks. (Junior)Dwight Macon will continue to play some of the timeat quarterback this spring. He’s a great athlete, but healso has a terrific arm. Behind him is (redshirt freshman)Brian Blackburn. Brian is a big guy who can throw andrun. And finally, we have a true freshman, LoganWoodside, who graduated high school early and is withour program now. This is the first time we’ve had a highschool player graduate early and enter our program. Ithas been a great benefit to him. He has had a chance togain some experience. We’ll see where he stands afterthe 15 spring practices. Will Owens benefit by knowing he is the startingquarterback instead of battling for his job like hedid the past three years?Campbell: The challenge never really leaves. I think theyoung quarterbacks in our program will challenge him.But Terrance is not bothered by competition. He’s nevershaken. His demeanor was always the same whetherhe was the starter or whether he came off the bench.Terrance was one of our most consistent players lastyear, and I don’t see that changing. If everybody on ourteam matches his level of consistency, that would be agreat benefit for us. Not only do I think Terrance is oneof the better quarterbacks in our conference, I believehe is one of the better quarterbacks in the country. Hisgoal is to win a MAC championship. That’s the one goalhe wants to accomplish in his college career.Special teams was greatly improved in 2012. I knowthat was an area of priority for you. How do youassess special teams going into next year?Campbell: We improved immensely on special teamslast year. Credit goes to (special team coach) StanWatson, and a lot of credit goes to our key guys on ourspecial teams. (Senior punter) Vince Penza made greatstrides last year. We found a system that fits what hedoes. He does a great job of getting the football wherehe wants it to go. With (junior) J.D. Detmer, we have oneof the best kickers in the country, in my opinion. He’sgot a great leg and is deadly accurate. He was good asa freshman but added consistency to his game. Thesilent leader on special teams is (senior) long snapperMatt Wall. I don’t think there is a more consistent longsnapper in the country. You can’t do much better at kickoff and punt returnthan Bernard Reedy.Campbell: Bernard Reedy makes our kicking game sodangerous. He can score at any time, whether it’s onkickoff returns or punt returns. I’d also like to mentionwhat a lift we will get on our special teams with thereturn of (sophomore) Kishon Wilcher. Kishon was oneof our top tacklers on the kick team in 2011 and we reallymissed him last year. We really like (redshirt freshman)D.J. Larkins as a special teams player, too. Both he andKishon could be returning kicks this year, too.Okay, let’s talk about the schedule. Every year wesay, “This is the toughest schedule we’ve ever had.”But this really is Toledo’s toughest schedule ever, isn’t it? I mean, how many schools this year can saytheir first two games will be against SEC opponents? And Navy and Eastern Washington are no slouches.Plus, you open the MAC with two road games.Campbell: It is the toughest schedule, no doubt aboutit. But we don’t talk much about, to be honest. We justfocus on ourselves and the process it takes to get better. We don’t control the schedule. The only thing we cancontrol is us. Our players will be excited to play schoolslike Florida and Missouri. But at the end of the day, weneed to work at getting better so that we can win aMAC Championship. To do that, we better be ready tocome and play week-in and week-out, no matter whowe are playing.

The Rocketswon eight straight gamesat one point in the season, vaulting to as high as No.23 in the nation in the APpoll.Making an Impact as anAssistantFollowing a stellarplaying career at MountUnion that included threenational titles, Campbellreturned to his alma mater in 2005, serving as offensivecoordinator/offensive line coach at the age of 25.Once again, the Purple Raiders won the NCAA DivisionIII title.Campbell then moved on to Bowling Green, where he had previously served as a graduate assistant. He coached the offensive line for two seasonsunder Gregg Brandon before being promoted to rungamecoordinator in 2008.Campbell then joined the Rocket staff as the offensivecoordinator under head coach Tim Beckman. At age 29, Campbell was the second-youngest coordinatorin the NCAA Division I FBS, but that didn’t stophim from molding the Rockets into one of the highestscoring offenses in the country. In 2009, Campbellhelped guide UT to theNo. 16-ranked offense inthe country (437.9 yardsper game) despite losingsenior quarterbackAaron Opelt to injury.A year later, the Rocketswent 8-5 and theirfirst bowl appearance infive years thanks to anoffense that ranked No.3 in the Mid-AmericanConference.In 2011, Campbell’s offenseranked No. 8 nationallyand first in theMAC in scoring offense(42.2), and 10th in thecountry and No. 1 inthe MAC in total offense(481.3). The 2007 Falcons went8-5 and earned a trip to the GMAC Bowl.Firing Up the Rocket OffenseThe next coaching stop for Campbell was a 20-minute drive up I-75 when Tim Beckman hired him tobecome Toledo’s offensive coordinator in 2009. Beckmanand Campbell coached together for one seasonat Bowling Green in 2004 when Beckman was an assistantand Campbell was a graduate assistant. Theyworked together to re-energize the Rocket offense. The results were immediate, as Toledo’s offense wasUT Athletic Director Mike O’Brien named Matt Campbell the 26th head football coach in the historyof the University of Toledo on Dec. 12, 2011 .

The Rockets also ranked No.1 in fourth-down conversions (80.0percent) and No. 18 in passing yards(278.1). Three Rockets earned All-MAChonors on offense, while Eric Page ledthe nation in receptions by a freshmanand was named first-team FreshmanAll-America by Phil Steele Magazineand the College Football News.Toledo’s offensive resurgence continuedin 2010, a season that saw theRockets go 8-5 and make their firstbowl appearance in five years. TheRockets ranked third in the Mid-AmericanConference in both scoring and total offense. UTalso featured two of the most exciting players in theleague, Page and running back Adonis Thomas.Page was third in the MAC in receptions with 99,and earned numerous All-America honors as a kickoffreturner. Campbell was one of nine coaches fromnon-automatic qualifying schools in the BCS to makethe list, and the only one from the Mid-AmericanConference. Toledo’s 2010, 2011 and 2012 recruiting

Head Coach Matt Campbellclasses have been ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the MAC byvirtually every scouting service.Taking Over the HelmCampbell‘s career took a dramatic turn at the endof the 2011 regular season when Beckman left theprogram to take the head coaching position at Illinois.UT Athletic Director Mike O’Brien immediatelynamed Campbell the interim head coach. Three dayslater, O’Brien decided to remove the interim labeland Campbell was introduced as Toledo’s permanenthead coach. With the Military Bowl looming in just 16 days,Campbell had to prepare his team for the game, whilesimultaneously gearing up for the 2012 recruitingbattles and re-building his coaching staff. For the Military Bowl matchup vs. Air Force, Campbellchose to remain in his normal offensive coordinatorposition in the coaches’ box and let associatehead coach Louis Ayeni handle the on-field duties. The strategy worked out perfectly, as the Rockets putup 42 points against a solid Falcon defense. The gamewas ultimately decided by the UT defense, however,as the Rockets forced a fumble when Air Force triedfor a two-point conversion following an apparentgame-tying touchdown with just over a minute leftto play.Building Champions at ToledoCampbell’s first full season as head coach of theRockets was quite an exciting ride. Following anovertime loss at Arizona in the season opener, Toledoreeled off eight consecutive victories, includinga 29-23 triumph over then No. 18 Cincinnati. Closeconference losses to Ball State and Northern Illinoisshot down the Rockets’ dreams of regaining the MACChampionship title, but UT won nine regular-seasongames and earned a berth into the 2012 FamousIdaho Potato Bowl vs. Utah State. It was Toledo’s thirdstraight winning season and third consecutive bowlappearance.Campbell has been a part of five nationalchampions as a player and coach, and hasparticipated in six bowl games as a coach.Campbell’s Rockets also accomplished somethingthat no UT squad has ever done—crack into the Top25 of the BCS rankings. Toledo moved into the No. 25spot on Nov. 4, the same week it placed No. 23 in theAP poll and No. 25 in the USA Today coaches poll. Itwas the Rockets first appearance in a Top 25 poll since2001.The 2012 Rockets featured nine players whoearned All-MAC honors, including a league-best sixslots on the first team. Junior Bernard Reedy earnedfirst-team accolades at wide receiver and punt returner,as well as second-team honors at kickoff returner.A first-teamer on the defensive side of the ball, seniorDan Molls, led the nation in tackles with 166.
