Recovery Strategy for the <strong>Jefferson</strong> <strong>Salamander</strong> in OntarioThe current global conservation status rank for the <strong>Jefferson</strong> <strong>Salamander</strong> was assignedby the Association for Biodiversity Information (ABI) (NatureServe 2008). Its ranking forthe <strong>Jefferson</strong> <strong>Salamander</strong> is G4, a level of ranking assigned to species with greater than100 site occurrences and greater than 10,000 individuals, giving the species anapparently secure ranking globally. NatureServe also applies conservation status ranksat the national (N) and subnational (S) (i.e., provinces or states) levels. Table 1summarizes the NatureServe rankings for the Canadian and U.S. populations. Thespecies has been designated as imperilled (S2) in Ontario, Illinois and Vermont and isconsidered to be apparently secure (S4) in only 5 of the 14 states where it is found.Notably, the species is also listed as threatened in Ontario under the EndangeredSpecies Act, 2007 (ESA 2007) and in Canada under the federal Species at Risk Act(SARA).Table 1.
