Central Brittany Journal – October 201028 Breton HorsesBreton HorsesThere is a long tradition of horse-breeding in the Centre of Brittany, and even though the currentcommercial demand for the Breton horse is relatively limited, it is a breed that evokes considerablelocal pride: horse fairs are still some of the best-attended events of the region.Central Brittany, particularly the area betweenCallac and St Nicolas du Pelem, has been associatedwith horse breeding for at least a thousandyears. The region has given rise to a breed ofhorse that is capable of living wild in the forestsand heathlands of the region - stocky, stronglimbedand well-adapted to various forms ofwork. In the Middle Ages, the Breton horse washighly valued by the Crusaders and the annualhorse fair of horses from the Forest of Duaultat Botmel, near Callac, is recorded to haveattracted traders from all over Europe In morerecent times, the Breton horse has been usedas a farm-horse - pulling the plough, pullingwagons to market etc, and also as a work horsein towns and cities. During the first world war,large number of farm horses were requisitionedto go to the front to aid the war effort - whichhad a considerable negative impact on the localeconomy in the post war years - and were alsosubject to censuses and forced purchases duringthe German occupation of Brittany from 1940-1944. In fact, the horse was only supplanted bythe tractor as the main source of motive poweron Breton farms in the 1970s.The Breton horse is renowned both for itsstrength and for its easy-going temperament.They are relatively easy to keep - not usuallywww.thecbj.com
