Welcome to Milwaukee!
Welcome to Milwaukee for the Rubber Expo and 178th Technical Meeting!
The Rubber Expo and 178th Technical Meeting are fully loaded with informative Technical Sessions,
useful Educational Symposia, and our exciting governance meetings. We will keep you busy Monday
through Thursday by increasing your technical knowledge and/or by you volunteering to help us
“expand the elastomeric profession and individual development through educational, technical and
interactive activities.”
We hope you enjoy the opportunity to familiarize yourselves with a prize city
of the Midwest. Milwaukee’s downtown has experienced a revitalization over
the past 10 years. Most of us know that Milwaukee is home to Harley Davidson
and is known for beer and great food. In fact, within a mile of the convention
center is the new Harley Davidson Museum. The Milwaukee Art Museum, located
just down the street on Lake Michigan, is an architectural wonder. Enjoy the
small neighborhoods located around the convention center including a new
city/farmers market open year round; the Water Street entertainment area, featuring
Milwaukee’s famous beers; and the Milwaukee River walk which weaves
throughout the downtown. Don’t forget to take a stroll along Lake Michigan with its great views, coffee
shops, marinas, and many other attractions.
The city truly has much to offer and so does the Rubber Division. Your elected officials, volunteer
committee members and professional staff are working to “enhance science, technology and business
across the evolving elastomeric community.” Our organization is only as strong as our member support.
Help make the Rubber Division “Your Vehicle to New Opportunities.”
Tim Dickerson, Chair
Rubber Division, ACS
Welcome to Milwaukee, WI, hosting its first Rubber Division, ACS Rubber Expo.
The recently renamed Frontier Airlines Center is considered to be one of the world’s most technologically
elite convention centers. It offers skywalks to hotels and restaurants and over $1 million in
public artworks.
This 178th Rubber Division, ACS technical meeting will offer 111 technical
papers, 130 exhibitors, 3 technical courses, a job fair, and a student colloquium
and poster session.
Milwaukee is a hidden gem of a city on a Great Lake. The city is known for its
many unique neighborhoods and downtown entertainment areas offering great
restaurants.
Downtown neighborhoods include Old World Third Street, the Milwaukee
Riverwalk, and the Third Ward. The Third Ward area now also has the new
Harley Davidson Museum that is a combined art, history and motorcycle museum.
Also, the city known for its beer obviously has many historical and new brew pubs, ale houses, and
beer halls.
I hope that everyone will get some time to walk the city and especially see the Lake Michigan lakefront,
about 10 blocks east of the convention center. The lakefront showcases the Santiago Calatrava
Art Museum with its architecturally advanced opening and closing wings/shutters.
I look forward to helping anyone needing advice on what to do in Milwaukee and hope you enjoy
the city as much as I do.
Letter from the Mayor
Dear Expo Attendees:
The City of Milwaukee is honored to host the Rubber Expo & 178th Technical Meeting of the Rubber
Division of the American Chemical Society from October 12-14, 2010. I am pleased to personally
welcome your members, and know you will enjoy your time here in Milwaukee.
Milwaukee’s superior attractions combined with its renowned warmth and hospitality assure you of an
enjoyable visit. The new one-of-a-kind Harley-Davidson Museum dazzles with its interactive exhibits
featuring motorcycles, history and American pop culture. The magnificent moveable “wings” of the
iconic, lakeside Milwaukee Art Museum welcome visitors to experience its world-class collections,
and interactive science, technology and water science exhibits beckon at neighboring Discovery World.
Brewpubs along the city’s charming RiverWalk provide lively entertainment, and a tempting array of
dining options and nightlife throughout the city will assure you of after-hours fun. Unique shopping
awaits in Milwaukee’s “SoHo” district, the Historic Third Ward, and the quaint ethnic neighborhoods
of Old World Third Street, Brady Street, Walker’s Point and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive invite all to
experience the city’s rich cultural tradition and diversity.
I know you will find our city the perfect meeting destination and hope you take the opportunity to
experience all that Milwaukee has to offer.
Sincerely,
Tom Barrett
The objective of the Fundamentals of Color and Appearance
course is to get a basic understanding of how to communicate
and control color. Topics in this course include basic color
vocabulary, color concepts on light sources, visual and
numeric assessment, how an object interacts with color
and appearance and setting tolerances.
Instructor: Ron Beck, Americhem
Mr. Beck is currently the R&D Manager at Core
Technologies. His focus areas are in leading color sciences,
raw material sciences, formulation/process sciences and
property modeling. He has been with Americhem, Inc.
since 1977, during which time he worked in product
design, quality testing, & research and development at
multiple locations. He has earned his B.S. in Natural
Science at The University of Akron, with major emphasis in
mathematics, computer science and physics.
