Ms. Christie’s ENG1D classand Ms. Whitfield’s EWC4U class arecontributing to a book on contemporarystudent life at <strong>Lisgar</strong>. We will beexchanging books with groupsfocusing on First Nations, Metis andInuit Cultures at Rideau High Schoolhere in Ottawa and with North ParkCVS in Brantford. The purpose of theproject is to raise awareness of FNMIcommunities in Ontario and of theircontributions to Canadian society.Congratulations to Mr. Hodgson andall of the student contributors to The<strong>Lisgar</strong>write. The second issue of theyear with a beautiful cover inspired byspring is linked to both the school andthe library web site.Saakshi Sutarwald and Grace Chenare to be congratulated for theirachievements in OCDSB Concoursd’art oratoire <strong>2012</strong> at Bell HighSchool. Saakshi finished third inFrançais cadre and Grace took secondplace in Français intensif. Thanks toMr. Derry for co-ordinating theparticipation of <strong>Lisgar</strong>’s competitors.On <strong>April</strong> 10, almost 200 of <strong>Lisgar</strong>’ssecond semester French studentswalked to the Bytowne Cinema for aspecial morning showing of MonsieurLazhar. Philippe Falardeau’s academyaward nominated film is about anAlgerian immigrant who is hired toteach at a Montreal grade-school afterthe suicide of a popular teacher. During their 8 day excursion,students toured a number of historicsights including Westminster Abbey,The Handel House Museum, WindsorCastle, Stonehenge and the RomanBaths in the city of Bath. As well,students took in a production of “Aida”at the Royal Albert Hall and a MozartClarinet Concerto at the BirminghamTown Hall. As well, both music groupsput on performances at CoventryCathedral, Warwick Castle and theSalisbury Guildhall. The studentswould like to thank Mr. Arrigo andMs. Mennill for organizing the tour aswell as the other chaperones whoaccompanied them on the trip, Mr.Derry, Ms. Sintic, Ms. McWhinnie,Mr. Desjardins, Mr. Petrie & Mr.LeBlanc.Visual ArtsThe Art Department is pleased toannounce that the ten murals paintedfor the Ottawa Hospital were picked upthis week. These murals will bedisplayed at the Civic and Generalcampuses. A ceremony to honour the<strong>Lisgar</strong> painters will take place in May.The grade ten Craft students went tothe Ottawa Art Gallery in March whilethe grade 9 and grade 11 art studentswill head off to the National Gallery on<strong>April</strong> 26th.All art students are reminded to takeadvantage of the "open studio" time inthe Art room during the lunch hour.They can use this time to get caught upon their assignments.If you are interested in seeing what thissemester's students have been workingon, come on out to the Spring ArtShow and Sale to take place in June.Hope to see you there.MATHEMATICS, COMPUTERSCIENCE & TECHNOLOGICALSTUDIESComputer Science<strong>Lisgar</strong> brainiacs have been involved intwo major computer sciencecompetitions this semester. InFebruary, 23 individuals competed inthe Canadian Computing Competition.Three students placed in the top 20 inthe country with perfect or near perfectscores and will qualify to compete atStage 2 of this contest at the Universityof Waterloo in May. The qualifierswere Geoffry Song, Sandro Youngand Fan Zhang. Bailey Gu was thewinner of the Junior competition with aperfect score.If that success was not enough, <strong>Lisgar</strong>played host to the OCDSB board-wideECOO computer contest. Cont’dAthleticsOur spring teams are now underway.<strong>Lisgar</strong> will be fielding three rugbyteams, Track and field, Senior Co-edvolleyball, rowing, ultimate,badminton, and Varsity girls’ soccer.The seasons are short making itimperative that all team members arecommitted to attending all practices.Mr. Findlater and The Senior Boys’Soccer team are making preparationsfor AAAA OFSAA in June.Both of our junior volleyball teamshave topped their divisions and arenow in the hunt for championships.Congratulations to our Snow boardersand Nordic skiers for representing theNational Capital Athletic Associationat the Ontario championships.Congratulations to Ben Wilkinson-Zan for successfully defending hisTitle of OFSAA Men’s NordicChampion!Team schedules can be found atwww.fatdog.ca under NCSSAA andwww.lisgar.ca under athletics.SCIENCEGrade nine classes recently attendedthe ecology field trip at MacSkimmingOutdoor Education Centre. This fieldtrip provided them with the opportunityto perform the bulk of the hands-onactivities associated with theirupcoming ecology unit.Senior students are presently gearingup for the Biology, Chemistry, andPhysics contests.Three <strong>Lisgar</strong> students excelled at theOttawa Regional Science Fair. AdamoYoung (grade 10) and Fan Zhang(grade 11) each placed first in theircategories and earned places at theCanada-Wide Science Fair inCharlottetown in May. Adamo waspresented with the Ontario Ministry ofEconomic Development andInnovation Stepping Stone Award.Sandro Young (grade 12), also acategory winner at the Ottawa Fair, hasbeen selected to be a member of thestudent team representing Canada atthe Intel International Science andEngineering Fair from May 12-19 inPittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He also wonthe Carleton University Science andEngineering Entrance Award for hisscience fair project.SOCIAL SCIENCESCongratulations to Ben Hillier-Weltman who took 4th place in theNational Finals of the CanadianGeography Challenge. The good newsis that Ben should be eligible tocompete next year, with another year ofGeography under his belt! The Grade 9Geography students have beenembarking on geocaching in thedowntown area, and will be headingout to Gatineau Park early in May.Recently our Geography staff has beenexpanded with the arrival of Mr.MacKenzie, a student teacher fromOttawa U., who has been with us on afive week placement, and we thank himfor all his assistance. Congratulationsgo to Ms. Jarvis on the arrival of herbaby boy in early March. We welcomeMr. Foster and Ms. Anderson whohave taken over teaching her classes.AP History students have been puttingin extra time in preparation for theirupcoming exam - we wish them everysuccess.LibraryThe <strong>Lisgar</strong> Library offers students andteachers much more than the bookstraditionally associated with libraries.Every week the web site highlights anew on-line resource. In recent weeksthese have included PicMonkey (an onlinephoto editor), Reuters.com (thenewswire service) and memorize.com(a flashcard generator). You can seethe latest feature by going to lisgar.caand clicking on Library. You can see4past features by clicking on the SNEWArchive link.Another resource available through thelibrary is CBC News in Review. Atregular intervals throughout the schoolyear DVD’s with study guides coveringcurrent topics are released. The mostrecent issue covered these topics:Election 2011 and the Robocallscandal,” “BILL C-30 and internetprivacy, Generation One: living in twoworlds (about children of immigrantswho were born in Canada, but are stillheavily influenced by the cultures andtraditions of the countries where theirparents once lived), and the drug war inMexico.The OCDSB makes a wide variety ofon-line databases and other referencematerials available through itssubscription to Knowledge Ontario andOSAPAC. One resource that isparticularly useful to English studentsis the Literature Resource Centerwhich is part of the INFOTRAC suiteof databases. Students will find criticalanalyses such as "Living in a HardTime: Politics and Philosophy inMacbeth" and “Poison, Play, and Duel:A Study in Hamlet.”The library also has a new piece ofhardware for use in teacher and studentpresentation in the library. The“Ladybug” document camera enablespresenters to project both two and threedimensional items and record eitherstills or video images of the objectsbeing projected.Of course the library is also a goodplace to find a good book. Asgraduating students move into theirfinal semester, they may be interestedin titles such as Good to Go: APractical Guide to Adulthood, MovingOut: A Young Adult’s Guide to Livingon Your Own, The Naked Roommate:And 107 Other Issues You Might RunInto in College and, perhaps mostessential of all, The Ultimate StudentCookbook.


Model UNThe Model UN club hosted a verysuccessful conference mid-<strong>April</strong>,which was attended by delegates fromWoodroffe, Nepean, and RidgemontHS as well as Elmwood School.Delegates worked together to achieve aresolution about a possible health crisisDebating SocietyThe Debating Society was proudlyrepresented by Grace Chen and PeterRussell at the Ontario StudentDebating Union's Regional andProvincial Debating Championshipswhere they acquitted themselves well.LEAFLEAF has just wrapped up a verysuccessful and busy Earth Week, whichincluded a showcase display, helpingwith "Clean Up the Capital", avegetarian lunch, sprucing up some ofthe school garden, rewarding batteryrecyclers, and hosting a very wellattendedCoffee House. Other recentinitiatives have included "Earth Hour",the sale of attractive refillable, stainlesssteel <strong>Lisgar</strong> water bottles, and raisingawareness about wasteful water habits.They are currently working onqualifying officially as an eco-school,which takes into account a wide rangeof initiatives and routines within eachschool.ReachIn mid <strong>April</strong> the club hosted anothertournament for local teams, andemerged victorious in the final againstEarl of March school. A senior teamtravelled to Guelph to play in theProvincial Quizbowl in late March (seephoto - Eddy Gao, Joe Su, CharlesLi, Will Sanna, Andrej Vukovic) andtook the title for the third consecutiveyear. The following week the team wonthe regional Reach title (the 8th time inthe last 9 years), thereby claiming aberth in next month's Reach provincialfinals in Toronto. We wish them goodluck in trying to qualify for theNational FInals at the end of May. Thefundraising Trivia Night had to berescheduled and will now take place onFriday, June 1st. There are many opportunities forsummer employment with the Ontario Public Service,summer camps, City of Ottawa, etc.Special Education and Student SuccessThe Special Education and Student Success teams continueto offer a wide range of services for students with identifiedlearning needs.
