So far, I have worked inseveral interrelated areas, both alone and with collaborators. One is hyperbolicsemigroups, encompassing geometric, linguistic, and other generalizations ofgroups that are hyperbolic in the sense of Gromov. is has yielded resultssuch as a polynomial-time algorithm for the word problem for hyperbolicmonoids (improving on the previous-known exponential-time algorithm) andlinks between hyperbolicity and string-rewriting systems. With collaborators, I constructed finite Gröbner–Shirshov bases for Placticalgebras and proved that Plactic monoids are biautomatic, answering Zelmanov’squestion.Another important area of my work has been automatic presentations, also known as FA-presentations. In joint work, I have studied closure propertiesof FA-presentable algebras, and developed a powerful diagrammatic techniquefor working with unary FA-presentations, and applied this to classifyunary FA-presentable partial orders, quasi-orders, tournaments, and trees.Teaching:431 ‘Semigroups’◆ Master’s-level course presenting an introduction to semigroup theory, includingpresentations, the structure theory of semigroups, free, regular, inverse, and commutative semigroups, the program of classification of finitesemigroups by pseudovarieties, profinite semigroups, and the Eilenbergcorrespondence with varieties of rational languages.1

LAN . AIN ..◆ I wrote the course from scratch and produced high-quality printed lecturenotes for the students, including exercises, advanced problems, andsolutions.◆ e notes I wrote were adopted by Attila Egri-Nagy for a reading coursefor research and honours students at the University of Western Sydney.Sep. 2008–Jun. 2009 Postdoctoral researcherCentro de Álgebra da Universidade de LisboaAv. In particular, I researched decision problems for automatic semigroups:given an automatic structure for a semigroup, is it possible to decidecertain algebraic properties of the semigroup? In some cases, I proved thatno such algorithm exists (for example, cancellativity and le-cancellativity arealgorithmically undecidable). I also worked in related areas such as automatonsemigroups (generalizing automaton groups) and automatic presentations. With collaborators, I classified all finitely generated cancellative semigroupsthat admit automatic presentations.Teaching:3600 ‘Fundamentals of Pure Mathematics’ [with Prof. N. Ruškuc]◆ Completely revised the course to concentrate on establishing the foundationsof mathematics rigorously.◆ Student feedback was enthusiastically supportive, with 85% overall approval.Postgraduate-level short course on computing with automatic semigroups.2

LAN . Holt (External, Univ. of Warwick)◆ I won a prestigious Carnegie Doctoral Scholarship to fund my Ph.D. studies.◆ My thesis was accepted without corrections.Summary of Ph.D. research:My doctoral research spanned the boundary between mathematics, specificallyalgebra, and computer science, specifically the theory of algorithms. Itfocused on the study of combinatorial and computational properties of semigroupsthat can be embedded into groups. e most interesting semigroupsare infinite. However, they sometimes have a finite description by means ofa presentation or an automatic structure. My research studied both of theseconcepts and also Malcev presentations, a notion introduced in 1977 by J.-C. Spehner but neglected since then. In particular, I successfully linked thenear-forgotten area of Malcev presentations with the new and active one ofautomatic semigroups. I then exploited this link in both directions, solvingproblems in the one area using the tools of the other.Sep. 1998–Jul. 2002 M.Sci. in Mathematics with First-class HonoursUniversity of GlasgowGlasgow 12 8, United Kingdom◆ Cunninghame Prize in Mathematics; Class prizes in Mathematics in first andsecond year; Class prize in Computer Science in second year.◆ President of the Maclaurin Society, the University of Glasgow student societyfor mathematics and statistics.3
