<strong>The</strong> L'Oréal-UNESCO Regional Fellowships for Women in Science (FWIS) in Sub-Saharan Africa is given to women scientists up to age 40 who are working towardstheir PhDs. <strong>The</strong> fellowship seeks to remove one <strong>of</strong> the major obstacles to womenpursuing a career in science - access to funds.Thawer-Esmail hails from Dar es Salaam and qualified as a medical doctor inTanzania before coming to UCT to study dermatology. Here she is a full-timeresearch student, facilitates undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in theDivision <strong>of</strong> Dermatology, and is in the process <strong>of</strong> completing a clinical-educationcourse."This award means a lot to me being a non-South African studying in SouthAfrica," she says. Sajjad Karamsi(<strong>of</strong> Nairobi Jamaat) and Sr. SumaiyyaThawer (<strong>of</strong> Dar es Salaam Jamaat) whoare currently studying in the University <strong>of</strong>Cape Town, who made an informativepresentations on Higher Education in South Africa during the 73 rd Supreme CouncilSession held in Arusha from the 27 th -29 th April 2012.<strong>The</strong> presentations covered a brief introduction <strong>of</strong> the Universities in South Africawith a particular focus on the advantages <strong>of</strong> studying at the University <strong>of</strong> CapeTown.


<strong>The</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Cape Town is recognized as the best university in Africa – <strong>The</strong>Harvard <strong>of</strong> Africa, and has good relations with all other leading Universities.Studying in the University <strong>of</strong> Cape Town is more economical than studying in UK,US, Canada and Australia, and even less costly than some universities in Malaysia.Tuition fees are approx ZAR 35,000 (US$4,500) per annum.Accommodation and Living expenses is approx ZAR 45,000 (US$5,550) perannum.Moreover, students from Tanzania and Madagascar have an advantage as they fallunder the SADC (South African Development Community) Countries, hence payingthe same fees as local South Africans.
